When Part of the Wiring Needs Renewing

Wiring does not age uniformly. A kitchen rewired twenty years ago can sit next to hall circuits that are fifty years old; an extension may have sound cable while the original house does not; water or rodent damage can ruin one run while the rest stays perfectly serviceable. Partial rewiring exists for exactly this — replacing the circuits or sections that have failed or fallen behind, while testing and keeping everything that still has life in it. It costs less, disturbs less, and targets the actual problem.

The Situations That Call for It

The common triggers: a circuit that testing has shown to be in poor condition; damage from a leak, a cable strike or pests confined to one run; a renovation or extension that needs new circuits added to current standards; sockets and lighting in one area that have perished with age; or an old consumer unit that needs replacing alongside the circuits it serves. What distinguishes a partial rewire from a repair is scale — when the faults along a circuit keep recurring, or the cable itself is perishing along its length, renewing the run is the honest answer.

The First Visit: Survey Before Anything Starts

A partial rewire should never start with a floorboard. The first appointment surveys what you have: testing the circuits in question, inspecting the cable condition where it is visible, establishing the routes new wiring would take, and checking the consumer unit that will protect the new work. From that comes a full written quote — what gets replaced, what stays, where new points go, how the work sequences, and the complete cost. Nothing proceeds until you approve it, and the survey itself is booked and charged as a normal hourly visit, the same as any repair call.

How the Work Is Kept Contained

Partial work lives or dies on containment. We agree the boundaries before starting: which rooms, which circuits, which days. Floorboards come up only where the runs need them; chasing is limited to the new positions; dust is sheeted and contained; and at the end of each working day the house is left tidy and, where possible, with power restored to unaffected areas. New circuits are tested as they are completed, and the work connects back into the existing installation only after the interaction points — the consumer unit, the joints between old and new — have been brought up to standard.

What You Are Left With

Renewed circuits that test as new, protected by a consumer unit whose devices are proven working, and an honest report on the condition of the wiring we did not touch — because partial work only makes sense if you know the state of what remains. If the untouched circuits are ageing towards their own replacement, you will know that from our survey and can plan around it, rather than discovering it circuit by circuit over the next five winters.

When to Call Us

Book a survey if a circuit keeps failing after repair, if damage has affected more than a single fitting, if you are planning a renovation or extension that needs new circuits, or if testing has already told you part of the installation is past its best. If you can see perished cable or smell burning, switch off at the consumer unit and treat it as urgent first.

Book Your Wiring Survey Today

Partial rewiring done well is precision work: replace what needs it, prove what does not, and disturb as little as possible in between. Call or book online for a survey visit — we will test what you have, quote the job in full, and start only when you say go.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Not every wiring problem needs a whole-house solution. A single circuit that has failed, a renovation that disturbed one run, a kitchen or extension with its own aged wiring — these call for partial rewiring: replacing exactly what needs replacing and leaving the healthy rest alone. The first visit is a survey that establishes what should be renewed, tests what can stay, and produces a full quote for the job before anything is started. That first day's assessment is charged as an ordinary hourly visit.

What our customers say about our electrical service

4.6 out of 5 from 11 reviews

Does what it says on the tin

No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.

Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement

Fixed it, but took longer than expected

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights

Turned up when they said

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about partial rewiring required

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

How is partial rewiring priced?

The survey visit is booked and paid like any other — booking fee plus hourly labour for the assessment. After the survey you receive a full quote for the rewiring itself, covering everything the job involves, and the work only begins once you have approved that price.

Can I choose to rewire just the worst circuit?

Often, yes — and testing determines whether that is wise. The survey tells you the condition of each circuit, so if one run is failing and its neighbours are sound, a single-circuit renewal is a legitimate answer. If the neighbours share the same age and condition, we will say so and let you weigh the options.

Will the whole house lose power during the work?

Not usually. We sequence the work so unaffected circuits stay live where the installation allows, and agree with you in advance which parts of the house will be off and when. Evenings generally end with as much of the home powered as the day's work permits.

How do you know the rest of the wiring is safe to keep?

Testing. The circuits we are keeping are measured for insulation resistance, continuity and earth protection alongside the work, and anything marginal is flagged in the survey results. Keeping wiring is only sensible when its condition has been proven, not assumed.

Is partial rewiring cheaper than a full rewire?

Substantially, because you are renewing a fraction of the cable and disturbance — though the honest comparison depends on what testing shows. If only one area is failing, partial is clearly the right spend; if most of the installation is at the end of its life, spreading renewal over years often costs more in repeated visits than doing it once.
