When a socket seems to have low voltage
A socket that appears to provide less power than it should may show up as a lamp that flickers, a charger that cuts in and out, or an appliance that will not start. Sometimes the outlet is not the cause. A loose connection elsewhere on the circuit, a damaged cable, a poor joint or a failing accessory can all interrupt the supply. A plug-in voltage display or a tester bought online cannot reliably tell you where the problem sits, and repeated testing with appliances can make a loose contact worse.
The term "low voltage" can also mean different things. Your home supply may be affected across several rooms, or there may be a fault at one socket only. If you notice heat, crackling, a burning smell or scorch marks, stop using that outlet. Switch off the relevant circuit at the consumer unit if you can identify it safely, and arrange an urgent visit.
Why the supply can drop
A sound circuit delivers a stable supply through connected cables, joints and accessories. If a terminal loosens, corrosion develops, or a cable is damaged, resistance can rise at that point. The appliance may then receive an unstable supply, and the weak connection can heat under load. A worn socket can cause a similar symptom, especially if a plug feels unusually loose or power changes when it is moved. Do not wiggle a plug to make it work; that can worsen the contact and expose live parts.
If several sockets or lights are affected, the issue may be further back at a junction, a protective device or the incoming supply rather than inside one outlet. A single affected socket points more towards the accessory or its local wiring, but that is only a first clue. We avoid replacing parts on a hunch because the same symptom can have several causes.
How we trace the fault
The electrician will ask what you have noticed, when it started, and whether other parts of the property are affected. They may ask which appliances were connected and whether a fuse or circuit breaker has operated. We then inspect the socket for visible damage, loose fit, discolouration or signs of heat. With the circuit made safe, appropriate test equipment is used to check the supply and the wiring connections without relying on a household appliance as a measuring instrument.
Checks can include comparing the affected point with another socket, testing the circuit at suitable points, and looking for a high-resistance or broken connection. The exact sequence depends on the layout and the initial readings. If the cause is not at the faceplate, the electrician may need to inspect another accessory or accessible junction on the same circuit. We will explain what the tests show and whether further access is needed before going beyond the agreed work.
Choosing the right repair
Where the fault is a damaged or worn socket, replacement may be enough. A loose connection can sometimes be corrected once the cable and terminal have been checked for heat damage. If the cable or a hidden joint is at fault, the repair may involve access to another point on the circuit or routing a replacement cable. We will discuss the practical options, including any making-good needed if a wall has to be opened; decorative plastering and painting are separate unless agreed.
A repair should address the source, not just the symptom. Simply fitting a new accessory will not help if a poor connection remains upstream. After work, the electrician tests the affected circuit and socket as appropriate and confirms whether the outlet can be returned to use. If any wider circuit issue is found, we will tell you what needs attention rather than leave you with an unexplained reading.
Keeping sockets reliable
Avoid overloading adaptors or daisy-chaining extension leads, and do not use a socket whose plug drops out or becomes hot. Keep an eye on outlets used by high-demand appliances, but do not remove covers or tighten terminals yourself. If a circuit has recurring faults, note which appliances were connected and which other outlets stopped working; that information can help us trace it faster. A persistent or spreading supply problem needs an electrician, not repeated resets.
When to call us
Book an electrician if one socket repeatedly loses power, if lights or appliances behave oddly, or if the cause is unclear. Treat burning smells, sparks, heat or visible damage as urgent and stop using the outlet. If it is safe and you know which circuit supplies it, switch that circuit off at the consumer unit while you wait. Same-day and emergency appointments may be available depending on demand.
Book your socket fault visit
Tell us which outlet is affected, what you plugged into it and whether other rooms have lost power. We will arrange a visit, carry out the checks needed to find the fault and explain the recommended repair. You pay a booking fee when you book; labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. Before any tools come out, we quote the full cost of the work for your approval. How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A socket that gives a weak or intermittent supply can leave appliances behaving unpredictably, even when other outlets work normally. We check the outlet and the circuit feeding it, identify where the voltage is being lost, and talk you through a safe repair.

Does what it says on the tin
No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.
Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about low voltage socket
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I test or repair a low-voltage socket myself?
Do not remove the faceplate or probe the wiring. A plug-in tester cannot locate a loose connection or confirm that the circuit is safe; stop using the outlet if it cuts in and out, feels hot or shows damage.
What will the electrician check?
They will ask which sockets are affected, inspect the outlet and use suitable test equipment to check its supply and wiring. If the readings point elsewhere, they may trace the fault to another accessible point on the circuit.
Is a socket that loses power a safety concern?
Intermittent power can come from a loose or damaged connection that heats under load. Stop using it if you notice heat, crackling, scorch marks or a burning smell, and switch off the circuit if safe.
Why does only one socket seem to have low voltage?
A worn socket or loose local connection can affect one outlet, but a cable fault or joint upstream can produce the same symptom. Testing is needed to identify which part is responsible.
How is the cost worked out?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
