Why Garden Lighting Fails

Outdoor lighting systems have more places to go wrong than indoor lighting because the wiring and fittings live in the damp, the frost and the soil. The usual culprits are:

  • A tripped protective device — garden lighting circuits are usually protected by an RCD, which trips when damp gets into a fitting or a cable is damaged. If every light went off together, this is the most likely reason.
  • Water in a light fitting — a failed seal on one downlight or spike light lets rain in, and damp inside a fitting can trip the whole circuit.
  • A failed transformer or driver — low-voltage garden lighting depends on a transformer, and when that fails the whole system goes dark even though the lights themselves are fine.
  • Damaged cable — garden wiring can be cut by spades and forks, nibbled by rodents, or attacked by frost where it has been buried too shallowly.
  • Corroded connections — outdoor connections that were never properly sealed corrode quietly until the circuit fails, often years after installation.

Why It Should Not Be Left

One damp fitting is rarely the end of the story. Moisture in a garden light can work along the cable into other fittings, and a circuit that trips repeatedly in wet weather is telling you that something is getting wetter each time. Corroded connections can also heat up under load. Sorting the fault early usually means one fitting or one section of cable, not the whole system.

How We Find the Problem

We start by checking the circuit and its protective devices, then test along the lighting system to see how far the supply reaches. With a low-voltage system we check the transformer's output first, because that saves time if it has failed. From there we inspect the fittings for water ingress and corrosion, and test each cable section to locate any break or earth fault precisely, so we dig or disturb as little of your garden as possible. You will be shown what we found and given a clear price for the repair.

How We Repair It

Repairs are matched to the cause. A failed transformer or driver is replaced with a correctly rated unit housed where weather cannot reach it. A fitting with a failed seal is replaced with a quality weatherproof (IP-rated) light, and any connections we remake are sealed properly against rain. If cable has been damaged, we repair or replace the affected run, burying or protecting it to the right standard so the spade does not find it again next spring. We test the whole system under real conditions before we leave.

Keeping the Lights Working

Garden lighting lasts longest when the weak points are looked after. Keep connections out of soil and standing water, choose fittings with good seals for exposed spots, and have the system checked if it starts tripping in wet weather — that pattern never improves on its own. If a bulb or fitting is to be replaced by hand later, we will show you which parts are safe to handle and how.

When to Call Us

Book a visit when the lights are completely out, when they work only in dry weather, or when the circuit trips whenever the lighting is switched on. If a fitting is cracked, filled with water, or you can smell anything warm or burning near the transformer, treat it as urgent and switch the lighting circuit off at the consumer unit if you can do so safely.

Garden lighting has a way of failing all at once — one evening everything is fine, the next the whole border is dark. It is often a fault you cannot see, buried in the wiring or hiding in a transformer. We will find out exactly why your garden lighting has stopped, put it right, and make sure the repair will survive the weather it has to live in.

Questions people ask about garden lighting not working

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Why did all my garden lights fail at once?

When every light goes out together the fault is usually upstream of the lights themselves — most often a tripped RCD, a failed transformer on a low-voltage system, or a broken main cable run. Individual fittings rarely fail in a way that blacks out the whole garden. We test from the supply downwards to find the single point of failure.

Is this something I can diagnose myself?

Checking whether the lighting circuit has tripped at the consumer unit is worthwhile, and on low-voltage systems you can look at the transformer for signs of water or damage. Beyond that, garden faults usually involve buried cable and sealed fittings that need proper test equipment. Digging around blind often causes a second fault.

Could the fault be dangerous?

It can be, when water has reached live parts. If the circuit trips repeatedly, fittings are full of water, or you notice a burning smell or warmth from the transformer, switch the lighting off at the consumer unit if you can do so safely and book urgently. Do not open fittings or connections yourself.

How is the work priced?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.

Can you add lights or upgrade the system while you are here?

Often yes. Once we have repaired the fault, we can advise on whether the transformer and cabling have spare capacity for extra fittings, and quote for any additions separately. Many customers use the visit to replace tired halogen fittings with more efficient LED lights.
