A jetter is a hose with a nozzle that fires water backwards, which pulls the hose down the pipe while the jet scours the walls ahead of it. Used well it is the most thorough way to clean a drain. Used badly it can crack a pipe, blow a joint apart or drive debris further down the run, which is why the setting matters as much as the equipment.
When jetting is the right method
Grease and fat in a kitchen run, silt and grit in an outside drain, soft sludge and scale in an old pipe, and root intrusion that needs cutting back are all cases where jetting does something rodding cannot. Rodding opens a channel through a blockage; jetting removes the blockage and the film on the pipe wall that would otherwise cause the next one. On a run that has been cleared repeatedly and keeps blocking, that difference is the whole point.
Jetting is also the sensible preparation before a camera survey. A camera cannot see a pipe wall that is coated in grease, and a survey of a dirty pipe tells you very little.
When jetting is the wrong method
On old clay pipes that have already cracked, on thin-walled plastic that has been damaged, on a run with a known collapse or a significant loss of fall, and on any pipe where the joints are suspect, high pressure can turn a blockage into a repair. In those cases rodding, or a lower-pressure clean, is the safer route, and sometimes the honest answer is that the pipe needs surveying before it is cleaned at all.
We also do not jet blind. If we cannot establish the pipe material and condition, we start cautiously and increase only as far as the pipe will take. That is slower, and it is the right way round.
How we set it up
We find the best access point — usually a chamber, sometimes a rodding eye — and check the run's direction and any branches before inserting anything. Blockages in a branch can be pushed into the main by careless jetting, so we work from the right end. We choose the nozzle for the job: a penetrating nozzle for a hard obstruction, a flushing nozzle for grease and silt, a chain or root cutter where roots have entered.
Water volume matters as much as pressure. A high-pressure jet with low flow moves debris around without carrying it away, so we work with enough water to flush the loosened material through to the next chamber where it can be removed rather than left to settle.
What we do about what comes out
Jetting dislodges a lot of material, and on a foul run that material has to go somewhere. We work towards a chamber and remove what collects there rather than flushing it into the sewer and hoping. On a run with a history of surcharging, that is the difference between cleaning a pipe and moving the problem to a neighbour's chamber.
After the clean
We test the flow at the affected fittings and in the chamber, and we tell you what the jetting revealed. A run that cleans up and flows properly is a maintenance problem solved. A run that clears but shows signs of damage, or that starts to slow again while we are still on site, needs a camera survey, and that is quoted separately.
Safety and hygiene
Jetting is a wet, messy process. Keep children and pets away from the working area, and expect some splash around an open chamber. Sewage and standing water carry bacteria, so wash your hands after any contact and keep the area ventilated. Never climb into a chamber, and never lean over an open one while the jetter is running.
Tell us before we attend if chemicals have been used on the drain. Caustic products and high-pressure water are a bad combination for anyone standing nearby, and it changes how we approach the job.
Keeping the pipe clean afterwards
A properly jetted drain stays clear longer than a rodded one, but it is not permanent. Fat and grease will build again if they keep going down the sink, and roots will regrow from the point where they were cut. If your run has blocked twice in a year, an annual clean is worth considering, and a camera survey will tell you whether the underlying pipe is sound.
To book, tell us the postcode, what the blockage is (grease, silt, roots, paper), and whether the pipe is old clay or modern plastic if you know. That helps us arrive with the right nozzle and the right expectations.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Jetting is the right answer for a lot of blockages and the wrong answer for some. Fat, grease, silt and roots give way to a properly set jet; a fragile old clay pipe or a run that has already partly collapsed does not. Judging which you have is the difference between a fixed drain and an expensive one.
What our customers say about our drainage service
4.2 out of 5 from 5 reviews
Fast, tidy and friendly
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the part had to be sourced locally), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Standing Water in Shower Tray
Happy overall
Good job overall. Turned up about 15 minutes after the window started, but rang to say so, and the work itself was tidy and well explained. Price was as quoted.
Job: Partial Soil Stack Blockage
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.

Questions people ask about high pressure drain jetting
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I hire a jetter and do it myself?
We would not recommend it. Hire machines deliver enough pressure to crack an old pipe or blow a joint apart, and the reaction force on the hose can be significant. Without knowing the pipe material and condition, it is easy to cause damage that costs more than the clearance.
How do you decide the pressure and nozzle?
By the pipe material, its condition and what is blocking it. Grease and silt take a flushing nozzle, hard obstructions a penetrating one, roots a cutter. We start cautiously on anything old or suspect and only increase as far as the pipe safely allows.
Is jetting safe for an old clay drain?
Often, but not always. Clay that has cracked or lost its joints can be damaged by high pressure, and a run with a suspected collapse should be surveyed before it is jetted. We assess before choosing a method rather than assuming jetting is always right.
Will jetting stop the drain blocking again?
It cleans the pipe properly, which keeps it clear far longer than rodding, but it does not change why the blockage formed. Grease and roots will return if the cause is not addressed, and a camera survey will show whether the pipe itself is sound.
What does jetting cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, parts quoted separately, so the full cost is approved before any tools come out. A camera survey or any repair the jetting reveals is quoted separately, once we have seen the condition of the run.
