A puddle beneath the washing machine demands attention straight away. Left alone, a small leak warps floorboards, damages neighbouring appliances and, at worst, reaches the machine's own electrical parts. The one thing not to do is ignore it and hope it was a one-off. Leaks are usually traceable to a specific component, and identifying that component accurately is the difference between a cheap fix and an unnecessary part swap.
Where washing machine leaks come from
Water escapes from a limited set of places. The inlet hose and its connection at the back can leak under mains pressure, which shows as water appearing even when the machine is idle. The drain hose and its clip can leak only during pumping. The detergent drawer overflows when too much or the wrong detergent is used, or when the drawer's jets are blocked. The door seal perishes, splits or traps objects such as bra wires that puncture it, leaking at the bottom front. Internally, hose connections, the sump, the pump and the tub can all weep water, which is often visible only from underneath. Sometimes what looks like a leak is a one-off oversudsy wash using the wrong detergent, so history matters as much as inspection.
How we find the true source
We begin by making the situation safe: isolating the power and turning off the water supply to the machine. Then we dry the area and work through the evidence. Water position tells a story – a puddle at the front during a cycle points towards the door seal or drawer, while water at the back under pressure points to the inlet side. Where the source is not obvious, we run the machine through test stages and watch each one: filling, washing, draining and, where safe, spinning. Underneath, we inspect hose connections, the sump and the pump with the machine safely isolated. The aim is certainty about the source before we quote anything.
Repairs and their limits
Many leaks are inexpensive to resolve: a loose hose connection tightened, a worn washer replaced, a hose refitted properly, a drawer cleaned and the detergent advice corrected. Perished door seals can be replaced on most makes, although it is a bigger job than it sounds on some models. Pumps and internal hoses are also commonly repairable. A leak from the tub itself, however, is usually bad news, because tub repairs are rarely practical and we will say so honestly rather than promising a fix that will not last. Any parts needed are identified, checked for availability on your model and quoted separately.
Safety first with a leaking machine
Water and mains electricity share the same appliance, so treat a leaking washer with respect. Do not stand in water to unplug it; switch off at the socket if the socket itself is dry, or turn off the machine's supply at the consumer unit if you are unsure. Turn off the water supply valve behind the machine if it is safely reachable. Keep children and pets away from the area, and do not use the machine again until the leak has been found. If water has reached a socket or an extension lead, leave the electrics alone and treat that as a priority for a professional.
Booking and what to tell us
Call or message Maintenance Men with the brand and model, where the water appears, whether it happens during filling, washing or draining, and whether it happens on every wash or occasionally. You pay the booking fee when booking, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and we quote the full cost and get your approval before starting. If water is spreading quickly right now, see our emergency leak page rather than a routine booking.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Water appearing under or behind the washing machine is a fault to take seriously, because leaks damage floors and can reach electrics. Leaks come from several possible points and each needs a different fix. We find the source, stop the damage getting worse, and explain the options plainly.

Questions people ask about washing machine leaking water
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Should I keep using the machine if it leaks only sometimes?
No. An intermittent leak is still a leak, and water reaching electrical parts or flooring turns a small repair into a bigger problem. Wait until the source has been found and fixed before using the machine again.
What will you check during the visit?
We isolate power and water first, then trace the leak by position and stage: inlet hoses and connections, detergent drawer, door seal, drain hose and clips, and internal hoses and pump where access allows. Diagnosis comes before any repair, and you approve the quote before work starts.
Is a leaking door seal repairable or does it mean a new machine?
A leaking seal is usually repairable – door seals are replaceable parts on most makes, though fitting them varies in difficulty by model. Whether it is worthwhile depends on the machine's age and the seal's cost. We will give you an honest view once we have confirmed the seal is the source.
Can I just tighten the hoses myself?
You can hand-tighten a visibly loose inlet hose connection with the water turned off first. Beyond that, be cautious: overtightening can crack fittings, and leaks from internal parts are not a DIY matter. If tightening does not stop it, book a diagnosis.
How much will it cost to fix?
There is a booking fee paid when you book and an hourly labour rate that depends on how soon you need us. We quote the full cost before starting and you approve it. Parts such as hoses or a door seal are quoted separately and are not included in the labour price.
