When a gas cooker refuses to light, the temptation is to keep clicking the igniter until something gives. Resist that instinct, because gas appliances deserve a careful and qualified response. This page explains exactly what Maintenance Men can and cannot do with a gas cooker that will not ignite, and how we make sure you still get the right help quickly.
The boundary, stated plainly
Maintenance Men is not Gas Safe registered and never carries out gas work. We do not service, install, repair, adjust, test, disconnect or reconnect gas appliances, gas valves, burners, pipework, flues or gas supply, and we never will. Gas cooker faults, including ignition faults, must be diagnosed and repaired by a Gas Safe registered engineer. What we can do is carry out any safe non-gas checks that apply, explain what the symptoms suggest in general terms, and recommend a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer with whom we work closely, so you are not left ringing random numbers from a search page.
What you can safely look at yourself
Check that the cooker is plugged in and switched on, because many gas cookers use an electric spark ignition and a dead igniter is sometimes just a lost power supply or a plug that has been knocked loose. Check whether the ignition produces a clicking sound and a spark at every burner or only some, and whether any burner lights briefly and then goes out. These observations, passed to us or to the Gas Safe engineer, are genuinely useful. Beyond observation, do not dismantle anything, remove burner caps to probe inside, or attempt to adjust any valve or supply fitting.
What our assessment covers
If you book an assessment with us, we will safely check the electrical side that gas cookers depend on: the power supply, the ignition switch wiring and the connections, all with the appliance treated with respect and any gas-related components left strictly alone. If the evidence points to the gas side, such as weak supply pressure, blocked burners or a fault in the gas valve or flame-sensing arrangement, we will tell you what we observed, explain why we are not the right people to open it up, and arrange a referral to our trusted Gas Safe partner, who diagnoses and quotes the gas work directly.
When it stops being a booking and becomes an emergency
If you smell gas at any point, act immediately. Do not operate electrical switches or appliances, and do not light anything. Open doors and windows if it is safe to do so. Turn the gas off at the meter only if it is safely accessible and you know how. Leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from outside, and do not re-enter until you are advised it is safe. A suspected gas leak is not a repair booking for anyone.
What the referral looks like
Once we understand the symptoms, we pass you to the Gas Safe partner with a clear summary of what we observed, so you do not have to explain everything twice. The partner engineer diagnoses the cooker properly, quotes the work directly and completes it safely, since gas work is entirely theirs. We stay available for any electrical aspects of the kitchen if needed separately.
How to get started
Send us your postcode, the cooker's brand, model and fuel arrangement, and what happens when you try to light it: clicks, sparks, smells or silence. We will advise whether a safe electrical assessment with us makes sense or whether you should go straight to the Gas Safe referral, and we will be honest about which is quicker.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A gas cooker that will not ignite is inconvenient, but the response matters more than the speed: gas appliances must only be worked on by Gas Safe registered engineers, and we are not Gas Safe registered. What we can do is assess safely within our limits, explain what the symptoms suggest and connect you with a trusted Gas Safe partner we work closely with.

Questions people ask about gas cooker not igniting
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can Maintenance Men repair my gas cooker?
No. We are not Gas Safe registered and never carry out gas work on any appliance. We can perform safe non-gas electrical checks, explain what the symptoms suggest and refer you to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer we work closely with, who diagnoses and repairs the cooker directly.
What can I safely check before calling anyone?
Confirm the cooker has power, since ignition on gas cookers is often electric, and note whether the igniter clicks and sparks at every burner or only some. Do not dismantle burners, adjust valves or probe inside the appliance; gas components need qualified hands.
The cooker clicks but the flame will not catch. What does that mean?
It usually points to the gas supply to the burner, the burner itself or the flame-sensing arrangement, all of which are gas-side components. That means a Gas Safe registered engineer, and we will happily refer you to our trusted partner with a summary of what you have observed.
Is a gas cooker that lights slowly or unevenly still safe to use?
Treat any change in flame behaviour as a warning and stop using the appliance until a Gas Safe engineer has looked at it. If you ever smell gas, follow the emergency steps: no switches or flames, ventilate, leave the property and call 0800 111 999 from outside.
How is your assessment priced?
The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, as shorter notice costs more. Any work we do is fully quoted and approved by you before it starts; the Gas Safe partner quotes their own gas work separately.
