Induction cooking is brilliantly direct — until the hob starts flashing its pan symbol and refusing to heat a perfectly good-looking saucepan. Intermittent or failed pan detection is one of the most common induction complaints, and it's also one of the most misdiagnosed, because the cause ranges from the cookware on top to the electronics underneath.
First, the cookware
Induction only heats pans with a ferromagnetic base — most stainless steel designed for induction, cast iron and enamelled steel. Aluminium, copper, glass and many everyday pans simply won't couple, and even induction-marked cookware can fail if the base has warped, become dented or worn thin with use. A pan that worked for years can drift out of tolerance without you noticing. Testing a known-good induction pan in the failing zone is a genuinely useful DIY check and often ends the mystery in thirty seconds.
When it's the hob, not the pan
If good pans fail across several zones, or one zone rejects pans that work happily elsewhere, the hob itself is the suspect. Pan detection depends on coils and sensors under the glass and on the control electronics reading them; as these degrade, detection gets unreliable — a pan may register briefly then drop, or only heat at certain power levels. Environmental factors play a part too: a thick residual film on the glass, an oversized pan overhanging the zone, or a pan placed off-centre can all confuse the sensors without any component having failed.
How we diagnose it
The engineer brings known-suitable test cookware and works through the zones systematically: which fail, with what pans, at which settings. We verify the supply is stable, then test the hob's sensors, controls and zone electronics to isolate the fault. On some hobs a fault code or diagnostic mode adds information. The result is a specific answer — cookware, sensor, board or connection — explained to you before any repair is priced.
Repair or replace?
Sensor and connector faults are often repairable at reasonable cost with parts quoted separately and fitted only with your approval. A failed zone driver board is a bigger decision, and on an older induction hob we'll compare repair cost against replacement honestly, including whether a new hob installation is the better spend. Either way, you decide with the full picture in front of you.
A note on safety and limits
Don't be tempted to lift the glass or open the casing to investigate sensors yourself — induction hobs carry high-voltage electronics that can hold dangerous charge even unplugged. Keep DIY to cookware tests, settings and cleaning. And if your appliance is gas rather than induction, remember that ignition and burner faults are gas work: Maintenance Men doesn't carry out gas work, and we'd refer gas-side problems to trusted Gas Safe registered engineers.
Cookware worth keeping handy
If you're buying new pans to suit induction, choose ones marked induction-compatible with thick, flat, undamaged bases — they couple efficiently, heat evenly and last. Keep one known-good pan aside as a test reference; when the hob behaves oddly again, thirty seconds with that pan tells you whether to suspect the cookware or the appliance. It's a small habit that saves diagnostic visits, and we're always happy to advise on what suits your particular model before you spend money on new cookware.
Booking the visit
Tell us the hob's brand and model, how many zones are affected, which pans you've tried and any error codes the display shows — that last detail alone can save significant diagnosis time. Book by phone or website; we confirm the appointment and take the booking fee at that stage, with the hourly rate reflecting how quickly you need us. Any repair is quoted and approved before it starts, so you're never committed to work you haven't priced.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
An induction hob that refuses to recognise a pan can be a cookware issue, a sensor problem or a fault in the hob's electronics — and each has a very different solution. We test the hob properly so you're not replacing good pans, or a good hob, on a guess.

Questions people ask about induction hob not detecting pan
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Could it just be my pan?
Possibly — induction needs ferromagnetic cookware, and worn bases, warped pans or unsuitable materials won't couple. Testing with a known-good induction pan in a different zone is a fair first check. If several good pans fail across zones, the fault is likely in the hob itself.
What does the engineer check?
We test the hob across zones with suitable cookware, check the sensors, controls and pan-detection circuitry, and verify the supply is stable. That separates a genuine electronics fault from a cookware or setting issue before any money is spent.
Is induction pan detection a safety feature?
Yes — it stops the coil energising without a pan, preventing overheating. But when detection becomes unreliable on good pans it indicates sensor or electronics degradation that will only get worse, so it's worth diagnosing rather than tolerating.
Can I open the hob to check the sensor myself?
No. Induction hobs contain high-voltage electronics and capacitor banks that remain dangerous after power-off. Keep to user-level checks — cookware, settings, cleaning the glass — and leave internal testing to an engineer.
What does diagnosis and repair cost?
A booking fee is paid when you book and the hourly rate depends on how soon you need us. Diagnosis is explained first; any repair or parts are quoted in full and approved by you before work begins.
