When an extractor fan stops working altogether, the first instinct is often to blame the fan itself. In practice, a dead fan can have several very different causes, and replacing the unit before diagnosing the fault is one of the most common ways to spend money unnecessarily. A fan that looks fine but receives no power, a failed isolator or switch, a tripped circuit, a broken connection in the wiring, or a motor that has burned out can all present in exactly the same way: press the switch and nothing happens.

Why fans fail

Extractor fans sit in some of the harshest environments in the home. Bathroom fans deal with constant humidity; kitchen fans collect grease and dust. Over time moisture can corrode connections, dust can seize the impeller, and the motor's thermal cut-out or windings can simply reach the end of their life. Fans with a humidity sensor or timer module add another layer: a faulty control module can stop the fan even when the motor is healthy. Occasionally the fault lies further back – a blown fuse in a fused connection unit, a tripped RCD, or a loose connection in the isolator switch.

What we check on arrival

Our engineer starts with the basics and works methodically. We confirm whether the fan has any supply at all, test the isolator and switching arrangement, and check any fused connection unit or circuit protecting the fan. If power is present but the fan still doesn't run, we examine the fan itself – the impeller for seizure or obstruction, the motor for signs of burning or wear, and any timer or humidity module for faults. If power is absent, the investigation moves back towards the wiring and the consumer unit, always within the limits of safe electrical diagnosis.

Diagnosis before repair

The point of this process is that the right fix depends entirely on the cause. A seized impeller cleared of dust and fluff can restore a fan that seemed dead. A failed timer module can often be replaced without changing the whole unit. A burnt-out motor usually means a new fan, and if so we'll talk through compatible replacement options, including whether a like-for-like swap is straightforward or whether the ducting and mounting need attention too. Wiring faults and consumer unit issues are electrical work we carry out to proper standards, and we'll always explain what we found before quoting.

What if the fan is beyond economic repair?

Fans aren't designed to last forever, and where a motor has failed on an old or discontinued model, replacement is usually more sensible than repair. We'll tell you plainly if that's the case, explain the options including sensible upgrade models if the existing fan is undersized for the room, and quote for the full job – fan, fixings and labour – before starting. Any parts are quoted separately and you approve the total before we proceed.

Safety and limits

We never encourage anyone to open a fan casing or probe wiring with the power on. Isolating a fan at the switch is fine; anything beyond that is a job for a competent person. If there is ever a burning smell, scorching around the fan, or the circuit keeps tripping, stop using the fan and get it looked at promptly rather than resetting and hoping.

Booking your diagnosis visit

Call or message Maintenance Men with the room the fan serves, the brand and model if you can see it on the unit, and what happens when you try to use it. Same-day visits may be available depending on the day's schedule. We'll book you in, diagnose the fault, and give you a clear quote before any repair work starts.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Questions people ask about extractor fan not working

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Could I fix a dead extractor fan myself?

Safe checks are limited to confirming the isolator or switch is on and resetting a tripped breaker at the consumer unit if you're comfortable doing so. Don't open the fan casing or test wiring with the power live – hidden faults inside the unit or supply are best left to a competent engineer with the right test equipment.

What will you check during the visit?

We test whether the fan is receiving power, check the isolator, switch and any fused connection unit, and inspect the fan itself for a seized impeller, failed motor or faulty timer or humidity module. If the supply side looks fine we work back through the wiring methodically. You get a clear explanation of the cause before we quote for the fix.

Is it safe to keep using the room without a working fan?

The room is safe to use, but moisture will build up quickly without ventilation. In bathrooms this encourages mould and damp on walls and ceilings, and in kitchens cooking smells and condensation linger. Wipe surfaces down, open windows where practical, and get the fan seen to soon rather than leaving it for months.

My fan stopped after the bathroom was redecorated – is that related?

Very possibly. Decorating work can disturb wiring, paint or sealant can block the fan's air path or sensor, and ceiling work can dislodge ducting. Mention the redecoration when you book, as it gives the engineer a useful starting point and can speed up the diagnosis considerably.

How much will the repair cost?

There is a booking fee paid when you book, and our hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit – shorter notice costs more. The full cost is quoted after diagnosis and you approve it before any work starts. Any replacement parts or a new fan unit are identified and quoted separately, with no work carried out until you agree.
