A blurry intercom camera image is usually one of a small set of problems, and most are straightforward to put right. Understanding the likely cause helps you judge whether the fix will be a five-minute clean or a component replacement.
The usual causes
The simplest is a dirty lens: entrance panels face the street and collect dust, traffic film, spider webs and salt spray, and the image degrades gradually enough that you may not notice until it is very poor. Condensation inside the panel is the second commonest — moisture enters through perished seals or a damaged gasket, fogs the lens from the inside and often causes intermittent problems that are worse in cold or wet weather. Genuine focus problems occur when a camera's focus has been knocked or when a fixed-focus unit has been disturbed. Finally, camera modules themselves age: image sensors degrade, and older cameras simply produce a soft, low-quality image that cleaning will not improve. Poor image quality in low light may be a failing infrared illuminator rather than the camera optics.
How we assess it
We start by looking at the image at the monitor and, where possible, at the camera directly. Cleaning the lens is the first step and often transforms the picture. If blur persists we open the panel to check for internal condensation or water staining, test whether the blur changes with weather and temperature, and assess the camera module's overall image quality. We also check the panel's sealing, since a camera that keeps fogging will keep fogging until the ingress point is fixed. If the image is uniformly poor rather than optically blurred, we will tell you honestly that the camera has aged and replacement is the realistic option.
What we do about it
A professional clean is quick and often sufficient. Where moisture is the cause, we dry the panel, reseal or replace the gasket, and may fit a weather-rated replacement panel if the original sealing cannot be restored. Where the camera has degraded or the focus cannot be recovered, we quote a replacement camera module — or a replacement panel where the camera is integral. Parts are quoted separately and the full cost is approved before work starts. In flats and shared buildings, the entrance panel is communal equipment, so work on it generally needs your landlord or managing agent's permission, and we will not proceed without it. We never force communal doors or bypass entry security to reach a panel.
What you can safely do
Wiping the external lens gently with a soft, dry or barely damp cloth is safe and worth doing. Do not spray cleaning fluid into the panel, do not open the panel housing, and do not adjust anything that looks like a focus ring — fixed cameras are easily knocked out of adjustment.
Honest expectations
Cleaning may fully resolve the issue, but if the camera has aged we will say so rather than charge for work that will not help. We cannot guarantee image quality against future weathering, and no repair stops a lens getting dirty again — though resealing stops the fogging recurring. Diagnosis comes first and the quote follows, so no repair cost can be promised before we have seen the system.
When to book
Book when the image is consistently blurry after cleaning, when it fogs up in cold or wet weather, when the picture has slowly degraded over years, or when night-time images are worse than daytime ones. Tell us the system make if known and whether the blur affects all monitors or just one.
A clear picture at the door is the whole point of video entry. Get in touch and we will restore it at a price you approve first.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A blurry video feed defeats the purpose of having a camera at the door: you can see a shape, but not a face. The causes range from a dirty or fogged lens to moisture inside the panel or a camera nearing the end of its life. Our visit identifies which applies and we carry out the fix — cleaning, resealing or replacement — at a price agreed before we start.

5 out of 5 from 7 reviews
Would use again
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.
Job: CCTV Installation
Second time we have used them
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Backup Battery Fault
Exactly what was quoted
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about blurry intercom camera feed
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I clean the intercom camera lens myself?
Yes — a gentle wipe of the external lens with a soft, barely damp cloth is safe and often helps. Do not spray liquid into the panel or open the housing; internal cleaning, resealing and focus adjustments are engineer work.
What do you check for a blurry camera image?
We clean and inspect the lens, check inside the panel for condensation and water staining, assess the camera's focus and overall image quality, and examine the panel's weather sealing. Once we know the cause we quote the fix — clean, reseal or replace — before starting.
Why does the picture fog up in cold weather?
That is condensation: moisture is getting into the panel through a worn seal and condensing on the lens when temperatures change. Cleaning alone will not fix it — the ingress point needs resealing, which we can do as part of a quoted repair.
Will a new camera guarantee a perfect image?
A replacement camera will restore the image quality the system was designed for, but we cannot guarantee pictures against future weathering, dirt or low-light limitations of the equipment. Any lens will need occasional cleaning.
How is this priced?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. After we diagnose the cause we quote the full cost of the work before starting, with parts such as a camera module or gasket quoted separately, and nothing proceeds until you approve it.
