CCTV equipment improves steadily — better night performance, sharper images, smarter detection, easier remote access — and a system fitted years ago can look distinctly dated next to what is available now. But an upgrade is not automatically a whole new system, and the worst upgrades are the ones that bin working equipment and lose recorded footage for no good reason. A planned upgrade starts with an honest assessment of what you have.
When an upgrade makes sense
There are several honest triggers. Image quality may no longer be good enough for what you need to see — faces or plates at the distances that matter, or a usable picture after dark. Storage may be undersized for the retention you want now. Remote viewing may be absent, unreliable or tied to dated technology. A recorder may be nearing the end of its life, and replacing it is the moment to reconsider the system around it. Or your property's needs have changed: new boundaries, a converted space, an outbuilding, or simply areas you never covered. Equally, we will tell you when an upgrade is not worth it — a healthy system that just needs a service, a clean and a settings review is a cheaper and perfectly legitimate answer.
Planning the upgrade around what you keep
Our assessment establishes what is worth keeping. Existing cabling is often the most valuable asset in a system and can frequently be reused with newer cameras and recorders, saving significant cost and disruption. Working cameras in good positions may be retained alongside new ones where they matter most. Adding cameras is also possible when the recorder has capacity and the new positions are practical; we assess this and quote the additional equipment and cabling as part of the agreed scope. Recorded footage matters too: where a recorder is being replaced, we plan the changeover so existing recordings are preserved where technically possible — and we will tell you honestly when they cannot be. We then plan the upgrade scope with you: which cameras, what recorder, where storage and quality land, what remote access looks like, and what the changeover day involves. That agreed scope is what we quote, so you approve a defined project rather than an open-ended one.
The upgrade day and what it delivers
The work follows the plan: existing equipment is carefully retired, cabling reused where agreed, new cameras mounted at the positions you approved, and the recorder configured properly from the start — recording modes, motion detection, retention, night settings and remote viewing on your devices, all tested end to end including after dark. We show you the finished system and explain what changed. It is honest to note the trade-offs: better quality and more cameras use more storage, remote features depend on your broadband and third-party services we do not control, and no upgrade guarantees against future faults. What a well-planned upgrade does deliver is a system matched to what you need now, built on the parts of the old one that were worth keeping.
Your upgraded system, used responsibly
Better cameras see more, which makes responsible use more important, not less. Recordings are personal data and you, as the owner, are responsible for handling them lawfully and considerately — cameras should cover your own property and boundaries, avoid unnecessarily filming neighbours' homes, gardens or public space, footage should be retained for a sensible period, and clips shared only appropriately, for example with the police if they request them in connection with an incident. When planning camera positions we will flag anything that reaches beyond your boundary. We plan and fit the equipment; we do not provide legal advice.
Aftercare
After the upgrade, use the first weeks to tell us if anything does not match your expectations — angles, alerts, image quality — because adjustments are cheap while the system is fresh. Keep the old equipment details to hand until you are settled, and mention any future network or building changes to us, since those remain the commonest causes of disruption to a working system.
Booking your upgrade
Tell us what system you currently have — makes, models, roughly when it was installed — what is disappointing you about it, and what you would like it to do that it does not. We will assess and quote the upgrade scope before any work is booked. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before we start, with equipment quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.
Booked 14+ days ahead
£25 booking fee
then £85 per hour of labour
Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.
Booked within 48 hours
£100 booking fee
then £65 per hour of labour
For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.
Same-day call-out
£220 booking fee
then £45 per hour of labour
Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.
Book the slot
Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.
We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
If your system is ageing, disappointing you at night, or no longer covering what matters, an upgrade can transform it — and a good upgrade reuses what is worth reusing rather than replacing everything. We assess your current setup, plan the improvement with you and fit it cleanly, with old footage and working equipment kept wherever it makes sense.
What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service
5 out of 5 from 7 reviews
Would use again
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.
Job: CCTV Installation
Second time we have used them
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Backup Battery Fault
Exactly what was quoted
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Alarm Repair Service

Questions people ask about cctv system upgrade
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Do I need to replace my whole system to upgrade it?
Usually no — cabling and some cameras are often worth keeping, and recorder or camera upgrades can build on them. The honest answer comes from an assessment of what you have rather than a blanket recommendation, and where existing footage or equipment can be preserved, we plan to preserve it.
What happens to my old recordings when the recorder is upgraded?
Where technically possible we plan the changeover so existing recordings are preserved, and we will tell you honestly when they cannot be — it depends on the drive and the old recorder's condition. We will raise this during planning rather than presenting you with a finished system and a shrug.
Can new cameras point further than my old ones did?
Modern cameras often have greater reach, but the same considerations apply: cameras should cover your own property and avoid unnecessarily filming neighbours' homes or public space, because recordings are personal data and the owner is responsible for using them lawfully and considerately. We will flag any position that reaches beyond your boundary when planning.
Will an upgrade make my remote viewing better?
Usually yes — newer recorders and cameras offer easier, more reliable app access — but remote viewing ultimately depends on your broadband, router and third-party apps or services that we do not control. We will configure and test everything we can and be clear about what sits outside anyone's guarantee.
How is an upgrade priced?
You pay a booking fee when you book. Labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts; parts are quoted separately.
