Replacing a shower is usually a decision made after months of putting up with something. The temperature will not hold, the flow has dropped away, the casing is cracked, or the unit is simply old enough that parts are no longer made for it. By the time people call us, they have often already bought a replacement, and occasionally they have bought the wrong one.

Why showers reach the end of their life

Showers fail in predictable ways. Cartridges scale up and stop responding, which is the most common failure on a mixer. Internal seals harden and weep, so water finds its way into the casing. Electric shower heating elements fur up and lose their ability to heat at full flow. Plastic casings become brittle with heat cycles and crack at the screw points. Valve bodies corrode where water has sat against them for years.

None of that is a manufacturing fault. It is normal wear in a wet, warm, frequently used environment, and it is why a shower that is fifteen years old is usually better replaced than repeatedly repaired.

Why it can get worse if left

A shower that is leaking internally will eventually leak externally. Water tracking behind tiles or into a floor wastes far more money than the replacement would have cost, and it is often only discovered when a ceiling below stains. A unit that cannot hold temperature is a scalding risk. A cracked casing can let water reach electrical components on an electric shower, which is a genuine safety matter rather than an inconvenience.

How we diagnose before replacing

We do not simply fit what you have bought. We check the incoming hot and cold pressure and flow, confirm the pipe centres and the depth of the wall recess, and look at how the old unit was connected — flexible tails, rigid copper, or push-fit. We check the electrical supply rating and cable size on an electric shower, and the condition of the isolating switch.

Then we match that to the unit. A replacement has to fit the existing pipe positions or the job turns into a re-plumbing exercise, and it has to be capable of working at your pressure. If what you have bought will not perform, we say so before we start rather than fitting it and leaving you disappointed.

How the replacement works

We isolate the water and, where relevant, the electrical supply, and test to confirm it is dead. The old unit comes off, and we inspect what is behind it — the state of the tiles, the condition of the pipe ends, any old sealant or water damage. That inspection is the part most people never see and the part that decides whether the new unit will last.

Pipework is adjusted or renewed as needed, with isolation valves fitted if there were none. The new unit is mounted level, connected, sealed at the wall with sanitary silicone, and the enclosure or tray checked for any gap that needs attention. We then run it through its full range and check every joint for weeps after it has been under pressure for a while.

Finally, the old unit goes in the van. You do not come home to a shower box in the hallway.

What the price covers

That includes removal and disposal, the new unit fitted in the existing position, sealing and testing. It does not include the cost of the new shower itself, and it does not include retiling or making good where a different sized unit leaves a gap. We will tell you at survey stage if either is likely so there are no surprises.

Preventing the next one failing early

Ventilate the bathroom properly — trapped moisture kills seals and grout. Do not force stiff controls; if a dial is hard to turn, it needs attention, not effort. Descale the head and hose regularly. In hard water areas, consider a scale reducer on the supply. And when something starts weeping, deal with it then, while it is a washer rather than a ceiling.

When to call it in

Call us when the unit no longer holds temperature, when flow has fallen away and cleaning has not helped, when the casing is cracked, when you can see water inside the unit, or when parts are no longer available. If you are searching for a shower fitting service near me, ask whether the price includes removal, disposal and a pressure check — those are the things that separate a proper job from a quick swap.

Book a call-out

Send a photo of your current shower and a note of your boiler or cylinder type, and tell us whether you have already bought a replacement. We will confirm what fits and book the four-hour slot.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Replacing a shower is not just swapping one box for another. The old unit has to come off without damaging the wall, the pipework behind it needs checking, and the new unit has to match the supplies you actually have. We remove, inspect, fit, seal and test in one visit, and we take the old unit away, so the bathroom is usable again by the end of the day.

Questions people ask about shower replacement

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

How is the work priced?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.

Can you replace just the shower and keep the enclosure?

Usually yes, provided the existing enclosure and tray are sound and the new unit fits the same footprint. If the new unit is a different size or the old enclosure is leaking, we will explain your options rather than forcing a fit.

What if the new unit does not fit the existing pipes?

That is exactly what we check before starting. Pipe centres and recess depth vary between models, and if adjustment is needed we will explain what it involves and what it adds before any work begins.

Is it worth repairing instead of replacing?

If the fault is a cartridge on a sound unit, repair is often the better value and we will say so. Once the body is corroded, the casing cracked, or parts discontinued, replacement is usually the cheaper route over the next few years.
