What a Completely Blocked Drain Actually Means
When water will not drain at all — the sink sits full, the toilet will not flush away, or the shower puddles and refuses to empty — the pipe is not just slow. It is completely obstructed, and nothing can pass until the blockage is physically removed. This is different from a slow drain, where some water still finds its way through. A total blockage affects everything connected to that section of pipework, and it will not improve on its own.
What Causes a Total Blockage
Complete blockages usually build over time. Fat, oil and grease poured down the kitchen sink cool and harden inside the pipe, layer by layer, until the passage closes entirely. Hair and soap combine into dense plugs in bathroom drains. In external lines, wet wipes, scale, tree roots and silt are the usual offenders. Sometimes a foreign object — a child's toy, a bottle cap, a piece of broken fitting — lodges in the pipe and everything collects behind it. Whatever the cause, the result is the same: water has nowhere to go.
Why You Should Not Wait
A fully blocked drain puts pressure on your whole plumbing system. Waste water can back up into the lowest fixtures in the house, often the ground-floor toilet or shower, flooding rooms with dirty water. The standing water puts strain on pipe joints and seals, and the longer waste sits in the line, the more it hardens and the harder the clearance becomes. There is also the hygiene issue — blocked drainage in a home is unpleasant, unhygienic and disruptive to daily life.
How We Diagnose the Blockage
First, we work out where the obstruction sits. We test which fixtures are affected, because that pattern tells us a great deal — if only the kitchen sink is blocked, the problem is local; if the toilet, bath and sink are all backed up together, the obstruction is further down the shared waste line. We check the external drains and manholes to see whether water is standing there. Where the location is unclear or the blockage is stubborn, a drain camera survey shows us exactly what we are dealing with, its position and its nature, before we start work.
How We Clear It Completely
Clearance depends on what is in the pipe. Professional drain rods break up and dislodge most obstructions, working from the nearest access point. For grease, scale and compacted waste, high-pressure water jetting scours the pipe walls clean rather than simply punching a hole through the middle — important, because a partial clearance blocks again quickly. For tree roots, mechanical cutting tools remove the growth and restore the bore. Once water is running, we flush the line thoroughly and test every affected fixture to confirm drainage is genuinely back to full flow, not just improved.
Prevention Tips to Keep It Clear
Never pour cooking fat or oil down the sink — collect it in a container and bin it. Use sink strainers to catch food scraps and hair, and keep wipes of any kind out of the toilet. If your drains blocked because of roots or scale, ask us about regular maintenance, because those causes return unless the pipe is treated or repaired.
When to Call Us
Call as soon as you notice water standing in any fixture, or several fixtures backing up at once. The earlier we attend, the simpler the clearance and the lower the risk of waste water entering your home.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
When water cannot move at all, you are dealing with a total obstruction — and no amount of plunging or chemical cleaner will shift it. A completely blocked drain stops every connected fixture working and can push waste back into your home. We locate the blockage precisely, clear it completely, and restore full drainage without delay, checking the whole line is genuinely clear rather than just moving the problem along.

Questions people ask about completely blocked drain clearance
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
How do I know my drain is completely blocked rather than just slow?
If water does not move at all, or several fixtures such as the sink, bath and toilet back up together, the pipe is fully obstructed. Gurgling sounds and smells from the drains are further signs. A completely blocked drain will not clear itself and needs professional removal.
Will chemical drain unblockers fix a total blockage?
Rarely. Caustic cleaners work on soft grease near the plughole, but a complete blockage is usually too dense or too far along the pipe for them to reach, and they can damage older pipework. They also leave you standing over standing water with harsh chemicals in it. Professional clearance is quicker and safer.
How long does it take to clear a completely blocked drain?
Many total blockages are cleared in a single visit once the obstruction is located, often within an hour or two of starting. Dense grease, roots or obstructions deep in the line take longer, and we will tell you honestly what we have found and how long the job should take before we proceed.
Can you tell me what caused the blockage?
Yes. After clearing it we can usually identify the material — fat, hair, wipes, roots or a foreign object — from what comes out of the pipe. If the cause is unclear or the blockage has happened before, a camera survey shows us the condition of the pipe and any underlying problem.
Do you need to dig up my garden or driveway?
Almost always no. Most blockages are reached and cleared through existing access points such as manholes, rodding eyes or the fixtures themselves. Digging is only ever needed if the pipe itself is collapsed or badly damaged, and we would always explain that and confirm with you first.
