Grease Is the Toughest Kitchen Blockage There Is
Grease blockages are different from other sink problems. Hair and food debris create obstructions you can often break up mechanically; grease coats the entire inside of the pipe and sets solid, narrowing the bore inch by inch until almost nothing passes. Pour hot oil down the sink once and it seems harmless — it goes down as a liquid. By the time it reaches the cooler sections of pipework, it has solidified into a wax-like lining that every future wash-up thickens.
That is why grease blockages tend to be severe by the time anyone calls: the sink has been slowing for weeks, and by the time water stands in the bowl, the pipe can be significantly choked along its whole length.
How Grease Buildup Happens
Every time fat, oil or butter goes down the plughole — from roasting trays, frying pans, gravy, or even milky drinks — some of it coats the pipe wall. Hot water flushes it a little further along, but the pipe cools as it runs, and the fat solidifies where the temperature drops. Food particles and soap then stick to the sticky surface, building a layered mass part grease, part debris.
Busy kitchens are worst affected: frequent frying, roasting and dairy-heavy washing-up mean the lining grows fast. Dishwashers contribute too, as greasy residue emulsifies in the machine and partly re-solidifies in the waste run. In hard-water areas, limescale bonds with the grease into an especially stubborn composite.
Why It Gets Worse — and Why It Smells
A grease-narrowed pipe drains slowly, and slow-moving warm water gives new fat more time to coat the walls rather than pass through. The buildup accelerates. Because the narrowing is distributed along the pipe rather than in one spot, plunging does little — there is no single plug to shift, just a narrowed tube.
Grease also traps food particles that decompose, which is why grease-blocked kitchen sinks often smell sour or rotten long before they stop draining. In the worst cases the blockage extends into the shared waste pipe and affects the dishwasher or washing machine outlet too, with waste water reappearing where it should not.
How We Diagnose the Extent
We ask about your kitchen habits and how long the sink has been slowing, then test the drainage with warm water and check whether other appliances sharing the waste line are affected — a dishwasher backing up into the sink tells us the blockage is beyond the sink trap. We inspect the trap first, since grease collects heavily there, then assess how far down the waste run the narrowing extends.
This matters because a trap-only clear will not fix a pipe that is coated further along, and we would rather do the whole job once than have you call again in a fortnight.
How We Remove Grease Buildup
Mechanical clearing comes first: we empty the trap, then use professional augers or rods along the waste pipe to break up and extract the solidified mass. For heavy grease lining we combine this with hot flushing and, where appropriate, a professional-grade degreasing treatment that breaks the fat down so it can be washed out of the pipe rather than left clinging to the walls.
The difference matters. Pushing a hole through a grease plug leaves the lining intact and the narrowing returns within weeks. Stripping the coating out restores something close to the original bore and keeps you trouble-free far longer.
We finish by running a full flow test, checking traps and joints for leaks, and cleaning the work area.
Preventing Grease Buildup
- Wipe fats and oils from pans and roasting trays with kitchen roll into the bin before any washing up — this is by far the biggest win.
- Collect used cooking oil in a sealed container and dispose of it with household waste, never down the sink.
- Scrape plates into the bin rather than rinsing scraps down the plughole.
- Run very hot water with a squirt of washing-up liquid for a minute after each big wash-up to keep residual fat moving.
- Have the kitchen waste line professionally flushed every couple of years if you cook a lot — it is quick and prevents the severe version of this problem.
When to Call a Blocked Drain Plumber
Book a visit if the sink drains slowly, if it gurgles as water goes down, if there is a sour smell from the plughole that cleaning the trap does not fix, or if the dishwasher or washing machine backs up into the sink. Those are signs grease has narrowed the line and will block it fully soon. If water is standing in the sink and nothing is going down, book emergency drain unblocking and we will prioritise you.

Questions people ask about grease blocked kitchen sink
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Does pouring boiling water and washing-up liquid down the sink help?
It can move small amounts of recently poured fat along before they set, and it is a reasonable habit after heavy cooking. But it will not shift established buildup — the grease has solidified along the cooler parts of the pipe where hot water from the tap does not reach effectively.
Why does our kitchen sink block when we never pour oil down it?
Fat reaches the pipes in ways people do not count: butter residue, cream and cheese sauces, meat fats rinsed off roasting trays, and greasy dishwasher water all contribute. It accumulates gradually, so a kitchen can develop a serious blockage without any obvious single bad habit.
How is a grease blockage cleared differently from a normal one?
A grease blockage coats the pipe rather than sitting in one place, so we combine mechanical clearing with hot flushing and professional degreasing treatment to strip the lining out. Clearing just the plug leaves the coating behind, and the problem returns within weeks — that is why we treat the whole pipe.
Can grease blockages affect the dishwasher?
Yes. The dishwasher usually shares the kitchen waste line, so a grease-narrowed pipe can cause it to drain slowly or push water back into the sink. If your dishwasher has started misbehaving and the sink is also slow, one blockage is often the cause of both.
How is the work priced?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
