Pathway repairs span everything from a single rocking slab to a route that has moved along its whole length, and the difference matters: the first is an hour's work, the second is a conversation about relaying. This page explains how paths fail, how we diagnose them, and what the repairs involve — with the honest limits of each.
How paths fail
Paths fail in familiar ways. Slabs tip or rock because water has washed the bedding out through the joints. Sections sink over soft ground, old trenches or root runs that have rotted away. Edges crumble where there is nothing holding them — an unrestrained edge is a path's weakest point. Cracks open in concrete paths as they age, and frost widens whatever water can reach. Gravel paths thin, migrate and mix with the soil underneath once the membrane beneath has failed. And anywhere water sits, algae and moss make the surface slippery, which is a repair issue as much as a cleaning one. The cause underneath almost always matters more than the defect you can see.
How we diagnose
We assess the fault and its surroundings: how far the surface is out of level, whether the movement is isolated or part of a pattern, what the bedding and ground beneath are doing where we can probe or lift, where water goes when it rains, and what loads the path carries — a route that takes wheelbarrows, bins or occasional vehicles needs more from a repair than a footpath does. Where roots or washout are suspected, we check along the line of the movement, because those causes will undo a superficial repair reliably.
The repairs
Re-bedding: tipped or rocking slabs lifted, bedding replaced with fresh compacted material and the slab relaid level. Edge repairs: restraints rebuilt or edges re-pointed so the boundary stops failing first. Crack repairs: concrete cleaned out and sealed with flexible materials so water stops widening them. Settled sections: excavated to sound material and rebuilt in compacted layers where the ground beneath has failed. Gravel paths: membrane repaired or replaced, edges re-secured, and fresh gravel topped up and levelled. Slippery surfaces: cleaned and treated, with the water conditions that grew the algae corrected where we can. Where the diagnosis shows the path has moved over much of its length — or the base has failed broadly — we will say plainly that relaying the affected stretch is the economical answer, and quote that as a bigger project after survey. Any excavation involves underground services: we locate carefully and use detectors where appropriate, but no scan guarantees what is below — utilities' plans and a safe dig approach are part of the responsibilities we set out with you.
Weather and limits
Repairs need suitable conditions — bedding and sealers will not do their job in the wrong weather — and we schedule sensibly, telling you plainly when weather must delay work. We do not guarantee that a repaired path will never move again, particularly over soft ground or near trees; what we do is re-lay on sound material, address the cause where practical, and tell you what to watch for so any new movement is caught early.
Costs and booking
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the repair is quoted and approved before we start, with materials quoted separately. When you book, tell us the surface type, how long the fault has been there, whether it worsens after rain or frost, and whether the path is used by anyone less steady on their feet — that affects how quickly we come.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service
4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Sorted the same day
Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.
Job: Uneven Shed Base
Turned up when they said
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Water-Damaged Patio
Good work, poor communication
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about pathway repair service
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I repair my garden path myself?
Re-laying a single slab on sound bedding or re-pointing joints is reasonable DIY, and we will say so where that covers your case. What DIY does not solve well is a slab that keeps moving, a settled section over soft ground, or a base that has failed beneath several metres of path — those need diagnosis and proper compaction. If you have fixed the same spot before and it moved again, that is the signal to have the cause assessed.
What do you check when repairing a pathway?
How far the surface is out of level and whether the fault is isolated or part of a pattern, what the bedding and ground beneath are doing, where water drains and sits, and what the path actually carries — feet, wheelbarrows, bins or vehicles. We look for roots and washout along the line of movement, because those causes will undo a surface-only repair every time.
Is a damaged pathway dangerous?
It can be the most hazardous surface on the property — paths are used without looking down, by everyone including visitors, children and older family members. Tipped slabs, proud edges and dips holding water or ice are all genuine trip risks. Tell us if the path serves anyone less steady on their feet, and we will prioritise making the hazard safe first.
Will the repaired section stay level?
We re-lay on sound, compacted material and deal with the cause where practical, which gives the repair its best chance of lasting — but we do not guarantee against future movement, especially over soft ground or near trees. What we do is explain what to watch for, so if the area starts moving again you catch it early, while it is still a small repair rather than a rebuild.
How much does pathway repair cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the repair is quoted and approved before we start, with materials quoted separately. Where the honest answer is relaying a longer stretch of path, that bigger project is quoted after survey so you see the scope before committing.
