If Someone Is Suspended
Talk to them. Check they are comfortable, that nothing hurts, that they can breathe easily. If they are in pain, in distress, or in an awkward position they cannot hold, call 999 — do that first and do not feel you have to explain yourself. Stay with them and keep them warm.
Do not climb under the hoist, do not stand on a chair, bath edge or step stool to reach the motor, and do not push, shake or force a hoist that has stopped. Do not cut or unclip the sling.
Emergency lowering or manual release should be used only exactly as the manufacturer's instructions for your model describe, and only by someone confident they can do it safely from a stable position. Some units have a pull cord, some a lever, some a valve on the actuator; they work differently and getting it wrong matters. If you cannot do it safely, keep the person comfortable and call for help — us, or 999 if they are in distress.
If Nobody Is Suspended
Switch the hoist off at the isolator or unplug the charger. Take it out of service, and do not keep pressing buttons to see whether it will come back — a unit that has failed once can fail again under load. Note down what happened while it is fresh:
- What you were doing when it stopped, and where the trolley was on the track.
- Whether it beeped, flashed or showed a code.
- Whether it had been on charge, and whether the charge indicator looked normal recently.
- Whether it made an unusual noise, smelt hot, or felt laboured just before.
- Whether it tripped the electrics.
Those five details often decide what we bring and can turn a second visit into a single one.
What We Can Do Remotely
We can talk you through the checks that are genuinely safe: confirming the unit is powered, that the emergency stop is not latched, that any key isolator is on, that the trolley is properly parked on its charger, and that the handset is paired if it is wireless. We can also tell you whether what you are describing is a stop-use situation. What we cannot do is diagnose a brake, a motor or a control board over the phone, and we will not guess at a part.
Attending
We will tell you honestly what we can offer. Same-day attendance may be possible depending on where you are in the West Midlands and what else is booked; we will not promise it if we cannot deliver it. When we arrive we test in order — supply, charger, battery under load, emergency stop, controls, brake, track — and diagnose before quoting. You approve the full cost before any work starts, with parts quoted separately.
If It Cannot Be Fixed Today
Sometimes the honest answer is that a part is needed, and we will not pretend otherwise to make the call easier. We will tell you what is required, when we expect it, and what that means for using the hoist in the meantime — which is usually not at all. We do not provide loan equipment, so if you need cover urgently, your care provider or the organisation that supplied the hoist is the right call, and we will say so.
Reducing the Chance of the Next One
Most emergency breakdowns we see are the end of a slow decline: a battery that had been fading for weeks, a brake binding, a joint working loose, a charger that had stopped charging properly. A planned service catches all of those. It is the least dramatic advice on this page and the most useful.
Calling Us
Have the make and model ready if you can see it, tell us whether anyone is currently suspended, and describe what the unit does when you press a button. If someone is suspended, say so at the start of the call. You pay a booking fee when you book, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work begins.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.
Booked 14+ days ahead
£25 booking fee
then £85 per hour of labour
Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.
Booked within 48 hours
£100 booking fee
then £65 per hour of labour
For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.
Same-day call-out
£220 booking fee
then £45 per hour of labour
Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.
Book the slot
Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.
We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A breakdown is frightening when someone depends on the hoist for every move, and the phone call usually comes when it has already stopped at the worst moment. We will not waste your time with a script. First we make sure the person is safe, then we establish what the machine is doing, then we arrange the soonest visit we can actually deliver.
What our customers say about our mobility & accessibility service
4.5 out of 5 from 8 reviews
Proper job, no upselling
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the old fitting was seized and needed careful removal), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Loose or Faulty Brakes
Fine in the end
The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.
Job: Stair Lift Service
Would use again
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 70 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Control Panel Fault

Questions people ask about hoist emergency breakdown
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
My mother is stuck in the sling right now. What do I do?
Stay with her, keep her calm and check she is comfortable and not in pain. If she is in pain, distressed or struggling, call 999 immediately. Emergency lowering is only for someone confident they can do it exactly as the manufacturer's instructions describe, from a stable position. Never climb under her or force the hoist. Call us once she is safe.
Can you come today?
Same-day attendance may be available depending on where you are and what is already booked, and we will tell you honestly on the call rather than promise something we cannot deliver. If someone is suspended or the hoist is the only way to move them, say so at the start and we will prioritise accordingly.
What should I have ready when you arrive?
The make and model if you can see it, the manual if you have it, and your notes on what happened — where the trolley was, any beeps or codes, whether it had been charged, any unusual noise or heat. Clear access to the whole track and the floor beneath it helps too, and please do not attempt repairs in the meantime.
Is there anything I can safely try before you get here?
Check the unit is powered, the emergency stop is not latched, any key isolator is on, the trolley is parked properly on its charger, and — for a wireless handset — that the remote has good batteries and is paired. Those cover a fair share of call-outs. Anything involving the motor, brake, track or control box should wait for us.
What will an emergency visit cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit — which is why an urgent call-out carries a different rate to a planned one. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start, with parts quoted separately.
