Why Thermostats Stop Working

The thermostat is the start of the whole heating chain, and a fault there means the boiler never receives an instruction. Common causes include:

  • Batteries — the classic cause. A weak battery can leave a display lit but the radio or switching unreliable, so the symptom is intermittent rather than obviously dead.
  • Settings and programming — schedules changed by accident, holiday modes still active, or a thermostat switched from heating to cooling mode on models that support both.
  • Radio and pairing faults — wireless and smart thermostats lose pairing with their receiver after power cuts, battery changes or interference, and the heating then ignores the thermostat entirely.
  • Receiver faults — the receiver unit by the boiler can fail independently of the thermostat, so a new thermostat upstairs will not fix a dead receiver downstairs.
  • Wired connection faults — on wired thermostats, damaged cable, corroded terminals or loose connections break the call for heat intermittently — the hardest kind of fault to see and the easiest to test.
  • The thermostat itself — relays and sensors fail with age, and old mechanical thermostats drift badly out of calibration, heating the house to the wrong temperature while appearing to work.

Telling a Thermostat Fault from a Boiler Fault

A quick test separates them: set the thermostat as high as it will go and listen for a click, or watch whether the boiler fires and the display shows a demand signal. If the boiler responds, the controls work; if it never responds at any setting, the fault is in the controls or their connection. Hot water working while heating refuses to run is another strong hint towards the thermostat side. Knowing this before you book speeds everything up.

How We Diagnose the Control Chain

We test the chain in order: the thermostat's power, settings and output; the receiver and its pairing on wireless models; the wiring between controls and boiler; and the boiler's response to a demand signal. On smart thermostats we check pairing, hub connections and firmware behaviour. On wired systems we test the cable end to end, because a broken conductor in a wall is invisible from both ends. Where the boiler's response to demand is the problem rather than the controls, we switch to diagnosing the boiler side — and if that leads towards gas components, we stop and refer.

Repairs and Upgrades We Can Do

We replace batteries and set schedules as part of the visit, repair damaged wiring and terminals, re-pair or replace receivers, and replace failed thermostats with compatible units. Many customers use the visit to upgrade: a modern programmable or smart thermostat gives per-day schedules, better temperature accuracy and often meaningful savings on heating bills, and we can quote the unit and installation separately. We are not Gas Safe registered and never carry out gas work, so our work is confined to the controls and wiring. We match any replacement to your boiler's compatibility — some system boilers and combis have particular requirements — and confirm it all before ordering.

Aftercare

Once the controls are working, we will show you how the schedule, override and holiday settings work so the thermostat is being used to its potential, and check that the boiler's pressure and general behaviour are healthy while we are there. A thermostat upgrade is also a good moment to review whether room-by-room control — additional thermostatic radiator valves — would suit how you actually use the house.

Booking Controls Work

Tell us the thermostat's make and model, whether it is wired or wireless, and what exactly fails — no response at all, intermittent drops, or heating that ignores the schedule. Same-day visits may be available but are never promised. A booking fee is paid when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate depending on how soon you need us, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts. Replacement thermostats and receivers are quoted separately. We cover the West Midlands.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

When the thermostat stops responding, the whole heating system looks broken even when the boiler is perfectly healthy. Thermostat faults range from batteries and settings to failed units and damaged wiring, and they are among the quickest, cheapest heating repairs there are. We will diagnose exactly where the control chain is failing and repair or replace what is needed.

Questions people ask about thermostat not working

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

What can I check myself before booking?

Replace the thermostat batteries with fresh ones, confirm no holiday or frost mode is active, and set the target temperature high to see whether the boiler responds. On wireless models, check the receiver near the boiler has power and its indicator lights behave. Those checks resolve a surprising number of thermostat faults.

My heating works but ignores the schedule — is that the thermostat?

Very possibly. An out-of-calibration sensor, a lost schedule after a power cut, or a receiver fault can all make heating run at the wrong times. We diagnose whether the schedule itself, the thermostat or the receiver is at fault, and it is usually a quick repair or re-setup.

Can you upgrade me to a smart thermostat?

Yes, where your boiler and system are compatible — we confirm compatibility before quoting. A smart thermostat is quoted separately from the labour, and we will show you how to use schedules and zones properly, which is where the savings actually come from.

What if the problem is not the thermostat but the boiler?

We test the whole control chain, so we will tell you plainly where the fault lies. If the boiler is ignoring a healthy demand signal and the cause turns out to be gas-side, we explain our findings and refer you to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer we work closely with — we never carry out gas work ourselves.

How much does a thermostat repair cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before we start, and any replacement thermostat, receiver or cabling is identified and quoted separately so you can choose the model you want.
