Why Radiator Valves Leak

A radiator valve has several places water can escape, and each points to a slightly different repair:

  • The valve tail or gland — the spindle where the valve head attaches has a seal or gland packing that dries and shrinks over the years, letting water seep around the spindle when the valve is turned.
  • The compression joint — the nut joining the valve to the pipe relies on an olive and compression. Joints loosen as pipework expands and contracts, and olives corrode in older systems.
  • The radiator connection — the joint into the radiator's threaded boss can weep, particularly where the boss has corroded or an earlier repair was made with the wrong tape or sealant.
  • The valve body itself — internal corrosion, especially in systems with poor inhibitor levels, pits the casting until it weeps through the body.
  • Thermostatic valve internals — the thermostatic head, sensor and pin can fail in ways that cause weeping or, more commonly, a valve that no longer closes properly.

Why a Weep Is Worth Chasing

Valve leaks are slow but relentless. Water wicks into carpet and underlay, stains floorboards, and in bad cases reaches chipboard floors or ceilings below. On a sealed system, every drop lost shows up as falling boiler pressure, and repeated top-ups feed corrosion into the system. Weeping at the spindle also tends to worsen whenever the valve is operated, so a valve that leaks only when adjusted will get worse each heating season. Repairing early means a valve swap on a drained radiator; leaving it can mean damaged flooring and a radiator boss too corroded to seal.

What You Can Do in the Meantime

Tightening a compression nut by a small amount with the system off sometimes stops a joint weep, and a container or towel under the valve protects the floor meanwhile. Do not dismantle the valve or the radiator connection — with a pressurised system, the moment a joint lets go the system empties onto your floor. Also avoid repeatedly turning a leaking spindle, as that accelerates the leak.

How We Repair It

All of this is water-side work; we are not Gas Safe registered and never carry out gas work. We begin by confirming which part is leaking — spindle gland, compression joint, radiator boss or valve body — because the repair differs. For most leaks we isolate the radiator, drain just that section, and either replace the gland seal, remake the compression joint with a fresh olive, or fit a new valve. If the existing valve is old, corroded or thermostatic heads are wanted, replacing the valve entirely is usually the better investment, and we can upgrade manual valves to thermostatic ones to improve room control at the same time. We check the radiator boss for corrosion before reassembling, because sealing onto a corroded thread simply moves the leak.

After the Valve Is Replaced

We refill and repressurise the system to the manufacturer's cold-fill pressure, bleed the radiator so it heats evenly, and check the repaired joint under both cold and hot conditions, since expansion opens up imperfect joints. If the system has been losing pressure for a while we will check inhibitor levels and top up as needed. You get the correct cold pressure reading for your boiler and a simple monthly gauge check to catch any future leak early.

Choosing Valves and Finishes

If you would like a particular style — angled, straight or corner valves, chrome finishes, or thermostatic control — tell us when booking. We will confirm compatibility with your pipework and radiator positions and quote the valve separately from the labour, so you know exactly what you are paying for before we start.

Getting It Booked

Tell us which radiator is affected and where the water is appearing — a photograph of the valve helps us arrive with the right replacement to hand. Same-day visits may be available but are never promised. A booking fee is paid when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts. We serve homeowners across the West Midlands.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A leaking radiator valve starts as an annoying dab of water on the tail nut and ends, if ignored, as stained carpet, warped flooring and a heating system that keeps losing pressure. The good news is that it is one of the most straightforward repairs in the heating world — entirely water-side work that we can usually complete in a single visit.

What our customers say about our heating & radiators service

5 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Fast, tidy and friendly

Booked the £220 booking-fee slot on Tuesday and got a message confirming the time the same morning. The cause was explained, the price agreed before any work started, and the job was done in about 46 minutes. Clean and tidy when they left.

Job: No Heating from Boiler

Turned up when they said

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 46 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Job: Expansion Vessel Fault

Exactly what was quoted

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Questions people ask about radiator valve leak

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I fix a leaking radiator valve myself?

With the system off and cool, gently tightening a compression nut a fraction of a turn is a reasonable first try, and a towel or tray protects the floor meanwhile. Dismantling the valve, removing the radiator or working on a pressurised system is where DIY turns into a soaked floor — leave the actual repair to us.

Will one leaking valve drain the whole system?

Not instantly, but on a sealed system every drop lost appears as falling boiler pressure, and a valve that lets go entirely will empty the heating circuit onto your floor. If the gauge has been creeping down as well as the valve weeping, that is the two ends of the same leak.

Can you upgrade my manual valve to thermostatic while you are there?

Yes. Replacing a valve means draining and refilling the radiator either way, so upgrading to a thermostatic valve at the same time is usually just the difference in the part, quoted separately. It gives you per-room temperature control and typically trims heating bills in rooms you use less.

Why does the valve leak only when I turn it?

The spindle gland seal has dried or worn, so it holds when static and weeps when the spindle rotates. We can usually replace the gland seal, but if the valve is old we may recommend replacing it outright, since a valve that has begun leaking at the spindle rarely stops there.

What does a radiator valve repair cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start, and any replacement valve or fittings are identified and quoted separately so you can choose the style and quality you want.
