Where showers actually leak

Leaks around a shower usually show up a metre away from the cause. Water gets through a failed seal at the tray edge or the cubicle corner, runs along the underside of the tray or behind the tiles, and appears as a stain on a ceiling below or damp skirting in the next room. The usual suspects are the joint where the tray meets the tiled wall, the vertical corner joints of the enclosure, the line where the screen or door frame sits on the tray, and the waste area. Flexible sealant is what stands between daily splashing and the fabric of your bathroom.

Assessing before sealing

Because the visible gap is not always the leaking gap, we start with a look at the whole shower. We check the tray for movement — a tray that rocks on an unlevel base will split any seal you apply — and we look for cracked tiles, hollow grout, swelling at the tray edge, staining below, and any sign that water has been travelling further than the seal line. If the enclosure is poorly fixed or the tray has dropped, we will say so, because resealing a moving joint is work that will need doing again. Where the evidence points to plumbing — a leaking waste, a failing supply connection — that is a job for a plumber, and we will tell you rather than paper over it with sealant.

Stripping and preparing

Old silicone is cut out in full. A common DIY shortcut is to run new sealant over the old bead, but new silicone does not bond to cured silicone, and the joint fails from day one. We cut the old material away, lift every loose fragment, clean the joint of soap scum and residue, and let it dry thoroughly. A wet or soapy joint is the other classic cause of early failure, so the shower is kept dry beforehand and, where needed, we give the joint time to dry out before applying anything.

Choosing and applying the sealant

Showers get sanitary-grade, mould-resistant silicone: it is formulated for constant damp, flexes with the tray, and can be cleaned without breaking down. We apply it along the tray-to-wall joint, the enclosure corners and the screen line as agreed, tooling each bead to a smooth, concave finish that sheds water rather than holding it. Not every joint needs sealing, and some enclosures rely on gaskets as well as sealant — we follow what the construction in front of us calls for. Colour is agreed with you in advance, and materials are identified and quoted separately from the labour.

Cure and first use

Fresh silicone needs cure time before it meets water, set by the product's instructions — often a full day, longer in a cool or humid room. We will tell you precisely when the shower can be used again and how to look after the new bead in its first weeks: wiping the joints down after use does more for its life than any product claim. Rushing the first shower is the most common way a good seal is spoiled.

When it is more than the seal

If the tray has dropped, tiles are loose, boarding is swollen or the leak persists with everything sealed, the problem is beneath the surface, and sealing alone will not solve it. We are straightforward about that, scope what can be done and refer what needs a specialist. Resealing is the right fix for a failed seal, not for hidden damage, and we do not claim a watertight guarantee — a correctly prepared and cured seal is the honest best that sealant can offer.

Getting ready for the visit

Leave the shower unused from the evening before if you can, so the joints are dry. Clear bottles and caddies off the tray and walls. If you want a specific colour — clear, white or a matched tone — mention it when booking or have the tube to hand. The estimate covers a typical single-shower reseal on one visit; a large walk-in enclosure, heavy mould growth or extra repairs will change the scope, and the full cost is agreed with you before we start.

Book a shower reseal

Booking takes a minute on the website or by phone. A booking fee is paid when you book, the hourly rate depends on how quickly you need us, and the full cost is confirmed with you before work begins. Same-day appointments may be available — worth asking if water is already appearing downstairs.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A shower is the wettest place in the house, and its seals work harder than anywhere else. When the bead around the tray or enclosure splits, water that should run to the drain ends up under the tray or inside the wall. We strip the failed seal, check where the water has been going, and rebuild the joint with mould-resistant sealant.

Questions people ask about shower seal replacement

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is shower resealing a DIY job?

A confident DIYer can run a bead of silicone, but the part that decides whether it lasts is everything before that: cutting the old seal out fully, getting the joint clean and dry, and leaving the full cure time. Sealing over the old bead or a damp joint is how most DIY attempts fail within weeks. We do the whole job to one standard.

What do you inspect before resealing a shower?

We look at the whole shower, not just the visible gap: whether the tray moves or has dropped, the condition of tiles and grout, the enclosure fixings, and any staining or swelling that shows water has been travelling further than the seal. If the signs point to plumbing rather than the seal, we tell you before any resealing is agreed.

The tray rocks slightly — can you still reseal it?

A moving tray will break any new seal, so we would raise that with you first. Depending on what we find, the tray may need levelling or refixing before the joint is sealed, and we will discuss the scope and cost of that openly. Sealing an unstable joint is work that fails, and we would rather not sell it to you.

Can you match the sealant colour to my tiles?

White and clear are the usual choices, and some ranges offer tones that sit happily against most tiling. If you want a specific brand or colour, tell us at booking or supply the tube yourself and we will confirm it suits the job. Materials are identified and quoted separately from the labour, so nothing is assumed on the day.

What does shower seal replacement cost?

A booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and agreed with you before any work starts. If sealant or other materials are needed, they are identified and quoted separately.
