Why a bed is worth building properly

You spend a third of your life on it, and a badly assembled bed announces itself quickly: creaks, a slat that escapes, a frame that migrates across the room. Most bed problems trace back to the build — bolts that were nipped up but never tightened, centre rails left out because the instructions were skimmed, slats unsupported in the middle. Building it right the first time means quiet nights and a frame that outlasts the mattress on top of it.

Styles we assemble

Divan bases with drawers, ottoman bases with gas-lift storage, wooden and metal frames, slatted platforms, cabin beds and children's beds with headboards and side rails. Each changes the work. Ottoman bases rely on gas pistons that must be mounted and seated correctly — a job with real weight and stored energy in it — while slatted frames depend on the slats and centre bar being positioned exactly or the mattress will feel wrong and the slats will work loose. We follow the manufacturer's instructions for your specific bed rather than assuming they are all the same.

How we build

We unpack and check the parts against the list, sort the hardware, and build on or near the final position — a bed is awkward to wrestle across a room once assembled. Frame joints are tightened properly with the right tools, not nipped up with a folded Allen key, and fixings are re-checked once the bed is complete, because frames tighten up as they take their shape. Slats are fitted with even spacing and proper centre support, and any fasteners the maker specifies with washers or thread-locking get exactly that.

Noise, stability and safety

A well-built bed should be silent. If it creaks after we leave, tell us — it is usually a joint or a slat to adjust, and we would rather come back to it than leave you listening to it. For beds with storage drawers, we check the runners take the weight of folded bedding; for ottomans, we test the lift carefully and show you how the mechanism behaves before we go. Where a bed is tall, has a headboard that could rock, or will be used by children, we discuss wall fixing where the wall is suitable and it is agreed — not every bed needs it, and we will not claim one always does.

Small decisions that matter

A few choices are easier made before the build than after: which side the drawers sit on a divan, whether the headboard goes against the wall you planned, how much clearance you want each side for bedside tables, and whether a slatted base sits high or low in the frame where the design allows. We will ask before anything is fixed permanent. If the bed is going under a sloped ceiling or a window, say so early — orientation affects how the frame is built and where the ladder or drawers end up.

What to have ready and how to book

Clear space around where the bed will stand, and if you are replacing an old bed, say so when booking so we can discuss whether its disassembly is part of the visit. Have the instructions and kit hardware available; if parts are missing or damaged, let us know in advance so we can assess what can reasonably be done and whether the manufacturer needs to supply replacements. Same-day slots may be available if you need the bed ready tonight. Call Maintenance Men — the full cost is quoted before starting and you approve it, the booking fee is paid when you book, and our labour is hourly depending on how soon you need us. We are fully insured across the West Midlands.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A badly assembled bed announces itself within a week: creaks at midnight, a slat that pops out, a frame that walks across the floor. Most beds fail at the joints — bolts never fully tightened, centre supports left out, slats fitted in a hurry. We build beds properly so your first night on the new frame is a quiet one.

Questions people ask about bed frame assembly

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is assembling a bed frame a sensible DIY job?

For a simple frame with a helper and a proper screwdriver set, yes — the main traps are skipping the centre support and under-tightening the bolts. Ottoman bases are a different matter, because the gas pistons are heavy and under tension. If the kit is complex, the room is tight, or you would simply rather not, we build beds quickly and correctly.

What do you inspect before and during assembly?

We check the parts against the manufacturer's list first, so missing bolts or damaged panels are caught before the frame is half-built. During the build we verify the frame is square, the centre support is fitted, and the slats are spaced as the maker intends. We finish by tightening everything again and testing the frame for rock and noise.

Are ottoman gas pistons dangerous to fit?

They are heavy components under spring tension, and they need to be mounted and seated exactly as the manufacturer describes. We fit them with the bed positioned safely, test the lift gradually, and show you how the mechanism behaves before we leave. We do not improvise with pistons or fittings — the wrong approach is how people get hurt.

Can you build a bed in a small room?

Usually, yes — beds are one of the pieces we most often assemble in situ, building the frame where it will stand because there is no space to build it elsewhere. Tight rooms, lofts and box rooms are normal for us. Tell us the room size when booking and we will arrive with the right plan and tools.

What does bed assembly cost?

You pay a booking fee on booking, and labour is hourly — the rate depends on how quickly you need the visit. The full cost is quoted before work starts and you approve it. If the kit is missing parts, we identify what the manufacturer needs to supply and those are quoted separately.
