Frame damage comes in different shapes
Door frames fail in a few familiar ways: a split jamb around the lock where a key has been forced or the door slammed into a weak point, a kicked-in section at latch height, rot in an external timber frame where water has sat for years, or a frame that was never properly fixed to the wall and has pulled away. Each needs a different response, and the difference between a repair and a replacement matters — so we diagnose before we quote, and we say which one you are looking at.
What we look for first
We check what the frame is made of, how it is fixed, and how far the damage extends. A split that stops short of the hinge side is a very different job from one that runs the height of the jamb. On external frames we probe beyond the visible damage for rot, because wet rot travels along the grain and the visible end is rarely the end. We also look at the wall behind: a frame fixed into crumbling plaster or soft brick needs the fixing strategy reconsidered, not just the timber replaced.
How we repair a frame
Small splits and dents can be filled and shaped so the frame looks and works as it did. Larger damage is treated properly: the failed section is cut out, a matching piece of timber is spliced in, glued and screwed, then shaped to the original profile. Where the frame has pulled from the wall, we re-fix it with proper masonry fixings and pack any gaps so it sits square again. Around the lock area we restore a solid surface for the strike plate or deadbolt to bite into — a strike plate screwed into filler is worthless, so we make sure sound timber sits behind it. Hardware is then refitted and the door tested through several full cycles.
When repair is not the right answer
We will tell you when a frame is past repairing. Extensive rot, a jamb split for its full height, damage to the structural opening, brickwork or lintel, or a frame that was wrong from the start are replacement or builder-level jobs, and we will say so rather than sell you a repair that will not last. We are equally straightforward about strength: a spliced section is good timber, but it is not the same as an unbroken original, and we will not claim it is. Decoration of the repaired area is not included unless agreed.
After a break-in
If someone has forced your door, the frame is often the first thing to fail, and a hastily filled frame will fail again the same way. We can make the doorway secure and repair the damaged section, and it is worth discussing the security of the whole assembly — door, frame and hardware together — while we are there. If the break-in was recent, report it to the police first and photograph the damage; insurers often want evidence, and a repair that destroys the evidence is a repair to delay.
Looking after a repaired frame
Keep external frames sealed and check the bottom of the jamb annually, since that is where rot starts, particularly where a step or paving holds water against the timber. Inside, a repaired frame wants the same care as any door: gentle closing and prompt attention if the latch starts striking hard. If the repair area ever starts moving again, tell us early — movement in a frame is much easier to deal with at the start.
Booking
We cover the West Midlands, and same-day appointments may be available depending on when you call — useful when the damage leaves your home unsecured. Booking involves a fee paid when you reserve the slot, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us, and the full cost is quoted and approved by you before work starts. If materials such as matching timber or a replacement strike plate are needed, they are identified and quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A split or damaged door frame is more than an eyesore: the frame is what your locks and hinges actually grip, so damage there affects how well the door closes and secures. We repair damaged frame sections properly, refit the hardware, and tell you honestly if a frame is past repair. No filler hidden behind a strike plate.

Questions people ask about door frame repair
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I repair a door frame myself?
Small dents and nail holes, yes — filler and sandpaper will do it. A split jamb or a frame pulling from the wall is different: the repair has to restore solid timber behind the strike plate, or the lock will fail again the same way. If you are not confident splicing timber and re-fixing into masonry, that is our kind of job.
What do you do when repairing a door frame?
We first establish how far the damage goes and why it happened — impact, rot, movement or poor original fixing. Then we repair accordingly: filler for small damage, spliced-in matching timber for larger failures, and proper masonry fixings where the frame has pulled from the wall. The lock area gets particular attention, because the strike plate needs sound timber behind it.
Can every damaged frame be repaired?
No, and we will say so rather than take on a repair that will not last. Extensive rot, a jamb split for its full height, or damage to the structural opening, brickwork or lintel needs replacement or builder-level work. A spliced section is good timber but not the same as an unbroken original, and we will not claim otherwise.
I had a break-in — should I repair the frame or replace it?
It depends on the damage, and we assess it honestly before quoting either. Before repair, report the break-in and photograph the damage, as insurers and the police often need evidence a repair destroys. Also check your policy — some insurers specify replacement rather than repair after forced entry.
How is frame repair priced?
You pay a booking fee when you reserve the slot, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved by you before work starts. Any materials, such as matching timber or replacement hardware, are identified and quoted separately.
