What Makes an Outdoor System Dangerous
Dangerous outdoor electrics usually show several of these signs together:
- Aging, brittle equipment — fittings whose plastic has yellowed and cracked, sockets without proper lids, and cable whose sheath has gone stiff or split.
- Signs of moisture throughout — corrosion on multiple fittings, RCD trips in wet weather, and connectors sitting in soil or standing water.
- Badly installed work — joints in tape, cable unsupported along fences, fittings mounted loosely, and circuits that nobody can trace or explain.
- Inadequate protection — outdoor circuits without proper RCD protection, or protective devices that have been tampered with or repeatedly reset without the causes being fixed.
- Damage that has accumulated — several knocked fittings, chewed or scuffed cable, and equipment held together rather than repaired.
Why "It Still Works" Is Not Reassurance
Outdoor electrics fail from the outside in, and a system can look functional while its safety margins are gone. Corroded connections carry load until they overheat; damp insulation leaks until it trips or worse; brittle cable splits the first time it is moved. The risk with a worn system is not that it stops working — it is that it stays working while becoming genuinely unsafe. If parts of it spark, smell hot or trip repeatedly, switch those circuits off at the consumer unit if you can do so safely and book urgently; if the concern is the system's general condition, a full assessment is the right next step.
How We Assess the Whole System
We start with the supply end: the consumer unit, the protective devices, and what they actually cover. Then we walk and test every outdoor circuit — sockets, lighting, outbuilding feeds — checking each fitting's condition, each connection's soundness, and each cable run's state with proper instruments rather than a visual glance. Insulation testing reveals damp and degradation you cannot see, and RCD testing confirms the protection actually operates. What you get is a plain-language report: what is dangerous now, what will fail soon, what is fine, and what it costs to address each part — so you can prioritise rather than guess.
How We Make It Safe
Safety work is prioritised first: anything live, wet, burnt or exposed is isolated and corrected immediately, using weatherproof (IP-rated) replacements and proper connections throughout. From there the work proceeds in a planned order — failed and deteriorated fittings replaced, cable runs repaired or rerouted and protected, connections remade in sealed enclosures, and protection verified or upgraded where it is inadequate. The system is tested as each stage completes, so you are never left with an unverified circuit live. If the whole system needs replacing rather than piecemeal repair, we will say so plainly and quote the options — sometimes a planned replacement is safer and cheaper than a season of call-outs.
Aftercare and Staying Safe
Once the system is sound, its upkeep is simple: keep seals and lids closed, keep connections out of standing water, and glance over the fittings after storms. We label the consumer unit clearly so every outdoor circuit can be isolated without hunting, and we note anything worth watching. If a circuit starts behaving oddly again later, an early call keeps a small fault small.
When to Call Us
Book urgently — same-day where we have slots — for anything live and exposed, sparking, smoking, hot, or waterlogged: switch the affected circuits off at the consumer unit first if you can do so safely. Book a full assessment when the system's age or condition worries you, when you have moved into a property with questionable outdoor electrics, or when a series of small faults suggests a bigger pattern.
Book Your Outdoor Electrical Assessment Today
We assess and make safe outdoor electrical systems across the West Midlands, with urgent appointments for dangerous conditions and planned visits for full assessments. Call or book online and describe what is concerning you — the fittings, the weather behaviour, the trips, the age of it all. We will come and tell you honestly what is safe, what is not, and what it takes to fix the difference.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Sometimes the problem is not one socket or one light but the whole outdoor setup: aging fittings, weathered cable, damp everywhere and an installation nobody can explain. If your outdoor electrics worry you, that instinct is worth acting on. We assess the entire system, identify what is dangerous and what is merely worn, and put it right in a planned, prioritised way.

Does what it says on the tin
No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.
Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights
Turned up when they said
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about dangerous outdoor electrical system
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
How do I know if my outdoor electrics are actually dangerous?
The urgent signs are visible: sparking, burning smells, scorching, water inside fittings, exposed conductors, or an RCD that will not reset. The quiet signs are cumulative: corrosion on several fittings, cable that has gone stiff or split, fittings that move on the wall, and trips that keep happening in wet weather. If several quiet signs are present, the system needs assessing even though it still works.
Can I keep using parts of the system while waiting for you?
Use nothing on any circuit that shows the urgent signs — sparking, heat, smell, water or exposed parts — and switch it off at the consumer unit if you can do so safely. On circuits that show none of those signs and behave normally, careful use is reasonable until the assessment. When in doubt, leave it off; the assessment is not far away.
Will everything need replacing, or just repairs?
It depends on what the assessment finds, and we will tell you honestly. Systems often need a mix: urgent corrections on the dangerous parts, replacement of fittings that are past it, and nothing at all on the sections that are sound. Where the whole installation is old and failing throughout, a planned replacement can be safer and cheaper over a few years than repeated repairs — we quote both and you decide.
What does an assessment cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
Can dangerous outdoor electrics be made safe in one visit?
The urgent hazards can — anything live, exposed, wet or burnt is isolated and corrected on the day, and we do not leave a dangerous circuit live. Full restoration of an aging system is usually a planned follow-up, agreed with you in priority order. You will know exactly what state things are in before we leave.
