Sewage Smell With No Blockage? We Trace Where It Comes From in Smethwick
We test the traps, joints and venting to find how sewer gas is getting in, since a drain that runs freely needs a different answer from a blocked one.

When a drain smells and drains poorly, the answer is usually a blockage. When a drain smells and drains perfectly well, the answer is about containment: something that should be keeping gas out is not doing its job. That is a diagnostic job rather than a clearance, and it is worth doing methodically.
Where sewer gas gets in
Every fitting connected to the drainage system should have a water trap, and every stack should be vented so that pressure changes do not pull that water out. Gas gets in when a trap has dried out, when a trap is too shallow, when a seal or a joint has failed, when a pan connector has perished, when a stack is blocked at the top, or when a pipe underground has cracked and gas is finding its way through the ground and up into a floor void.
Occasional smells that appear only in certain weather often point to a venting issue, because pressure differences change with wind and temperature. Smells that are constant and localised point to a failed seal near that spot.
Narrowing it down
We ask where the smell is worst, when it appears, whether it follows use of a particular fitting, and whether it started after building work, a new appliance or a period of vacancy. Then we check the traps on every fitting in the affected area, including the ones nobody uses. A bath, a spare basin or a shower that has not been run for weeks will have a dry trap, and that is the single most common cause of a sewage smell in an otherwise healthy house.
We also check appliance connections. A washing machine or dishwasher waste connected without a proper trap, or a hose pushed too far into a standpipe, can let gas straight past the seal. It is a small detail that is regularly missed.
Tests we use
Where the obvious checks do not find it, a smoke test or a dye test can locate a break or a failed joint without excavation. Smoke introduced into the run shows up where it should not, on a wall, at a floor, in a neighbouring space. A dye test on a branch can show whether water is going where it should. Both are useful and both are less disruptive than opening ground on a guess.
A camera survey is the next step if we suspect a defect underground, particularly on an older clay run or where ground has moved. We will explain what the camera shows rather than simply reporting that a repair is needed.
What is straightforward to fix
Dry traps, perished pan connectors, failed trap seals, loose compression joints, a washing machine connection without a trap, and a stack terminal that has been blocked by a bird's nest are all ordinary work. Some of these can be put right at the visit; some need a part. We will say which before starting.
A trap that keeps drying out is worth a second thought rather than repeated refilling. It can mean the fitting is rarely used, which is easily solved by running water weekly, or it can mean the trap is being pulled empty by pressure changes, which is a venting problem and needs addressing properly.
What is not a quick fix
A cracked pipe under a floor, a broken branch connection or a failed stack joint is a repair that needs access, and the scale of that access is what decides the cost. Those are quoted after diagnosis, not before. We will not promise a repair will eliminate every trace of smell until we know what we are dealing with, because a second defect on the same run is common in older properties.
Living with it safely in the meantime
Ventilate the affected room rather than masking the smell. Keep the door closed so it does not spread, and keep children and pets out of any area where the smell is strong and persistent. Sewer gas in a confined space is not something to breathe in for long periods, and it can be an indicator of a genuine defect rather than a nuisance.
Do not pour bleach or caustic products down the drain to treat a smell. It does not address the cause, and it can damage the very seals that are supposed to be keeping the gas out. Tell us if you have used anything.
To book, tell us the postcode, which room smells worst, whether any fitting is rarely used, and whether the smell began after building work or a new appliance. If you have a spare bathroom, run the taps for a minute before we arrive — if the smell goes, we already know a lot.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A sewage smell in a house where everything drains normally is a puzzle worth taking seriously. Nothing is blocked, so the gas is finding a way in rather than being pushed up a pipe. That means a dried trap, a failed seal, a venting fault or a defect underground — and each of those is found in a different way.
What our customers say about our drainage service
4.2 out of 5 from 5 reviews
Fast, tidy and friendly
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the part had to be sourced locally), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Standing Water in Shower Tray
Happy overall
Good job overall. Turned up about 15 minutes after the window started, but rang to say so, and the work itself was tidy and well explained. Price was as quoted.
Job: Partial Soil Stack Blockage
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.

Questions people ask about sewage smell from drains
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I work out the cause myself?
You can check the simple things: run water in every trap including unused fittings, look under basins for a trap that is missing or dry, and check the washing machine standpipe holds water. Do not open floors or dismantle joints to look for a leak.
What do you check?
Every accessible trap and seal in the affected area, appliance connections, the pan connector, the stack terminal if it is safely reachable, and the flow at each fitting. If that does not find it we use smoke or dye testing, and a camera survey if a defect underground is likely.
Is sewer gas dangerous?
It should not be breathed in over long periods, particularly in a small or unventilated room, and it can indicate a real defect in the system. If the smell is strong and persistent, ventilate the space, keep people out of it and have it looked at rather than living with it.
Why is the smell worse in windy weather?
That pattern usually points to venting, because pressure changes around the stack affect the water seals in the traps. It is a common cause of intermittent smells and is worth checking rather than dismissing as a draught.
What will it cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, parts quoted separately, so the full cost is approved before any tools come out. If a smoke test, camera survey or an access repair is needed, we will explain and quote that separately before going ahead.
