Gas flames are honest — a healthy burner burns with a steady, mostly blue flame, and anything lazy, yellow, orange or uneven is the appliance telling you combustion isn't right. Weak flames make cooking slower and less controllable, but the more important point is what they can indicate about the gas side of the appliance and about safe combustion.
What a weak or yellow flame can mean
The mundane causes sit at the burner ports: spillovers partially blocking them, a burner cap seated crookedly after cleaning, or moisture from a recent wash temporarily affecting the flame. Those can often be resolved by careful, safe cleaning and correct reassembly of the parts the manufacturer expects users to handle.
Beyond that sit causes that are firmly gas work: burner internal faults, problems with the gas supply pressure or regulator, issues in the pipework feeding the hob, or combustion settings that need professional adjustment. A lazy yellow flame deserves particular respect — it suggests incomplete combustion, which can produce carbon monoxide. Don't persevere with a yellow-flaming burner; stop using it and have the appliance checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
What we do — and the line we hold
Maintenance Men is not Gas Safe registered and does not carry out gas work of any kind: no servicing, repairing, adjusting, disconnecting or reconnecting of gas appliances, burners, valves, pipework or supply. What we can offer is guidance on what's safe to check, assessment of any genuinely electrical aspects of the hob within safe limits, and a referral to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer with whom we work closely, who will diagnose and quote the gas-side work directly.
Safe steps before any visit
With the hob cold and the controls off, you can lift off the pan supports and burner caps, clean spillovers from the ports with a soft brush or cloth, and re-seat the caps so they sit level and firm — a crooked cap is one of the most common causes of an odd flame. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and go no further. Never dismantle a burner body, never poke anything into gas ports, never adjust any connection or fitting, and if you smell gas at any point, stop: treat it as an emergency. Don't operate electrical switches or appliances, ventilate if safe, turn the gas off at the meter only if safely accessible and you know how, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 — a suspected leak is not a booking.
When to involve a Gas Safe engineer straight away
If cleaning and re-seating don't restore a proper blue flame, if flames are weak across all burners rather than one, or if there's any suggestion of incomplete combustion, book a Gas Safe registered engineer rather than waiting. We're happy to recommend the trusted partner engineers we work with and to explain what we observed so their visit starts informed.
Pressure problems affect every burner
A useful diagnostic clue before anyone visits: check whether the weak flame affects one burner or all of them. One weak burner points toward that burner's ports or cap — often the safe cleaning route. All burners weak together points toward the supply or regulator, which is gas work through and through and needs the Gas Safe engineer without delay. Telling us which pattern you're seeing when you book means the right person gets involved from the start, and you don't spend time and money on the wrong visit.
Getting help arranged
Contact us with the hob's brand and model, which burners are affected, what the flames look like and whether anything preceded the change — a spill, a clean, work in the property. We'll advise on safe interim steps and arrange the right referral. Any booking with us involves a booking fee paid when you book and an hourly rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, with any work quoted and approved before it starts.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A flame that burns low, yellow or unevenly changes how your pans cook and hints that something isn't right with the burners or the gas supply to them. Some checks are safe for a homeowner; work on the burners, valves or supply is strictly for a Gas Safe registered engineer. We help you tell the difference and arrange the right referral.

Questions people ask about weak gas flame on hob
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Why would my gas hob flames be weak?
Possible causes include partially blocked burner ports, a burner cap seated wrongly, moisture after cleaning, or issues with the gas supply or regulator pressure. Supply-side and burner-internal causes are gas work and need a Gas Safe registered engineer.
What can I safely check myself?
With the hob cold and gas controls off, you can remove and clean the burner caps and pan supports and make sure the caps are seated correctly, following the manufacturer's instructions. Don't dismantle burners further, and don't touch any gas connections or adjust anything.
Are yellow flames dangerous?
A lazy yellow or orange flame instead of a crisp blue one suggests incomplete combustion, which can produce carbon monoxide. Treat it as a reason to stop using the burner and get a Gas Safe registered engineer to check the appliance — don't simply turn the flame up and carry on.
Do you repair gas hobs?
No — Maintenance Men is not Gas Safe registered and never carries out gas work. We can advise, assess any genuinely electrical aspects within safe limits, and refer gas faults to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer with whom we work closely.
What does a visit cost?
There's a booking fee paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us. Any work we can safely do is quoted and approved before it starts; gas work is quoted directly by the Gas Safe engineer we refer you to.
