A fan that runs but extracts nothing is a distinctly different fault from one that's merely weak, and the distinction matters for the repair. Weak suction suggests gradual restriction; no extraction at all usually means the airflow path is broken somewhere completely – blocked, disconnected, sealed shut, or prevented from opening. Because the fan motor is clearly working, the diagnosis focuses entirely on the air route.
Why a running fan might move no air
The backdraught flap is the prime suspect. This spring or gravity-operated flap sits at the fan outlet or in the duct to stop cold air and pests coming in when the fan is off. If it sticks fully shut – through paint, grease, corrosion or a broken spring – the fan spins against a closed door and extracts nothing. Next most common is duct trouble: flexible ducting that has sagged and disconnected in a ceiling void, squashed flat by insulation or stored items, or filled with debris, or a duct that was never properly connected to the outside vent in the first place. A sealed-over or painted-shut external grille, or a vent blanked off during roof or rendering work, produces the same symptom. Occasionally the impeller has come loose from the motor shaft – the motor spins, the blades don't.
What you can check safely
Look at the external grille or vent cover from outside if it's safely reachable: is it visibly blocked, painted over, or missing? Inside, with the fan isolated at the switch, you can see whether the fan cover is heavily blocked, but don't remove it or reach inside. Beyond that, the diagnosis needs proper access and testing, especially where ducting runs through lofts or ceiling voids.
How we find the break in the airflow
Our engineer confirms the fan's impeller is actually turning under load, checks the backdraught flap for freedom of movement, and traces the duct route from fan to outside – looking for disconnections, squashing, blockages and water or debris accumulation. We test airflow at the fan face and at the external vent to establish where the air stops moving. Where ducting runs through a loft, access to that space is needed, so it helps if you can mention how the duct is routed when booking.
Repairs and what to expect
A stuck or broken flap is usually a straightforward replacement. Reconnecting and properly supporting sagged ducting, or replacing squashed flexible duct with correctly sized rigid or good-quality flexible duct, restores the airflow path. A blocked external vent is cleared or the grille replaced. A loose impeller is refitted or the fan replaced depending on its condition. Where we find the duct was never connected properly – more common than you'd think after botched installations – we'll re-establish it properly and quote for that work.
Limits and honesty about access
Some duct sections are genuinely inaccessible without opening ceilings or going into awkward loft spaces. If that applies, we'll tell you exactly what access is needed, what can be achieved in the visit, and quote for any additional work separately. We won't pretend a hidden duct can be fixed sight-unseen, and larger jobs may be quoted as a separate follow-on visit.
A note about recently fitted fans
One more practical point: if the fan has been replaced recently and never extracted well from day one, say so when booking. New-fan faults are disproportionately installation faults – a duct never connected, a flap fitted wrongly or a fan matched to the wrong duct size – and that history changes where the diagnosis starts.
Getting booked in
Contact us with the room, whether the fan makes normal running noises, and anything you know about the duct route or recent building work. Same-day attendance may be available. We'll trace the fault, explain it clearly, and quote before starting.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
If the fan turns but no air is being pulled out of the room, something in the airflow path has failed completely – a jammed backdraught flap, a blocked or fallen duct, or a sealed-over external vent. This is a different problem from a weak fan, and it usually has a definite fix. We diagnose the whole route from fan to outside.

Questions people ask about no air extraction
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
The fan sounds normal but moves no air – how is that possible?
The most common cause is a backdraught flap stuck fully shut, so the fan spins against a closed opening. Other causes are a disconnected, squashed or blocked duct, a sealed-over external vent, or an impeller that has come loose from the motor shaft. The motor being healthy is actually good news – it narrows the fault to the airflow path.
Is a stuck backdraught flap an easy fix?
Usually yes. Once identified, a stuck flap is freed or replaced with minimal disruption, and it's one of the cheapest fixes for this symptom. The diagnosis is the main part of the job, because the same symptom can also come from hidden duct problems that need different treatment.
Will you need loft access to check the ducting?
Often yes, if the duct runs through the loft or a ceiling void. Let us know when booking whether you have loft access and roughly where the fan's duct exits the building. We'll confirm what we can reach and be upfront if any section needs additional access or a separate visit.
Could the duct have been badly installed originally?
Unfortunately it happens – fans fitted with the duct left unconnected, squashed behind the fan, or simply not reaching the outside vent. If we find that, we'll re-establish a proper connection, correct the duct route where accessible, and quote for the work before starting. You approve the full cost before we proceed.
How much does this diagnosis and repair cost?
You pay a booking fee when booking, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us. After we trace the fault, we quote the complete job – labour, parts and any ducting materials – separately and clearly, and nothing proceeds until you approve the total.
