When an intercom makes no sound at all, the problem sits somewhere on the speech path between the entrance panel and your handset, or in the power that feeds them. The good news is that most causes are simple: a failed handset speaker, a loose or corroded connection, a faulty button on the entrance panel, or a blown fuse on the system's power supply. The task is working out which, and that is what our visit is for.

What causes total silence

The most common culprit is the handset itself. The speaker or the hookswitch that picks up the call can fail, or the contacts inside can become dirty or bent so the circuit never closes. If nobody else in the building can hear their intercom either, the fault is more likely in the entrance panel, the shared wiring or the system's power supply rather than your own unit. Corroded connections are very common on older wired systems, especially in damp communal areas where moisture gets into the entrance panel. A tripped breaker, a failed transformer or a blown fuse on the system supply will silence every handset on the line at once.

How we diagnose it

We start by establishing the extent of the fault. Is it just your handset, just one flat, or the whole system? That single question points us down very different paths. From there we test the handset with a known-good unit where possible, check the hookswitch and speaker, inspect the connections at both the panel and the handset, and measure the line for the audio and power signals the system should be carrying. We also check the entrance panel buttons, since a button that has failed mechanically will never complete the call circuit. By the end of the visit we can normally tell you whether the fault is in your handset, the shared cabling, the panel or the supply.

What happens next

Once we know the cause we will quote the repair before starting: a replacement handset, cleaning or re-terminating connections, a new panel button, or a replacement fuse or transformer. Parts are quoted separately so you can see what you are paying for. If the fault turns out to be in shared wiring or communal equipment in a block of flats, we will tell you plainly — that work usually needs your landlord or managing agent's permission, and we will not touch shared systems without it. We never force doors or bypass building security to gain access for testing; if the entrance panel is behind a secured door, access needs to be arranged.

What you can safely try first

If your handset is a plug-in type, reseating it in its cradle is safe and occasionally fixes a poor connection. Beyond that, and beyond checking obvious user controls like volume settings and mute, fault-finding on intercom wiring is not DIY territory. Low-voltage it may be, but the wiring runs through communal areas and misidentifying lines can take out the whole system, so the electrical side is best left to us.

Limits and honest expectations

We diagnose first and quote second, so we cannot promise a repair time or a fix before we have seen the system. Older intercoms can develop multiple faults, and where a system is at the end of its life we will say so and give you an honest view on repair versus replacement. If the system belongs to a housing association or managing agent, we may need to work through them.

When to call us

Call when the intercom is completely silent, when sound has gradually faded, or when you have already checked volume settings and reseated the handset without success. When you book, it helps to tell us the make of the system if you know it, whether it is audio or video, how many flats share it, and whether anyone else is affected. That information lets us arrive with the right test gear and likely parts.

If your intercom has gone quiet, get in touch and we will trace the fault properly and give you a clear, approved price for putting it right.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Pressing the buzzer and hearing nothing is frustrating, especially when you are expecting a visitor or a delivery. It is a fault with a small list of likely causes, and our visit is about finding the right one rather than guessing. We will test the whole speech path — panel, wiring and handset — and explain exactly what has failed before anything is replaced.

What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service

5 out of 5 from 7 reviews

Would use again

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Job: CCTV Installation

Second time we have used them

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Backup Battery Fault

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about intercom no sound

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I fix a silent intercom handset myself?

Reseating a plug-in handset and checking volume or mute settings are safe DIY checks and worth trying first. Anything involving the internal electronics, the hookswitch or the wiring should be left to an engineer, because intercom lines are interconnected and a mistake can silence the whole system.

What exactly do you check on a no-sound visit?

We establish whether the fault affects one handset or the whole system, test the handset and hookswitch, inspect and measure the wiring at the panel and handset ends, check the entrance panel buttons, and look at the power supply and fuses. You get a clear diagnosis of what has failed before we quote any repair.

Is it safe to keep using a door entry system with no sound?

It is not dangerous, but it is a security problem: if you cannot hear visitors you cannot identify them, and you should not admit anyone you cannot verify. Treat the entry system as out of use and rely on other means of confirming visitors until it is repaired.

Our whole block's intercom is dead — will you still come out?

Yes, but if the fault is in shared or communal equipment we will normally need permission from your landlord, housing association or managing agent before working on it. Let us know the situation when booking and we will tell you what access and approvals we need.

How much does it cost to repair a silent intercom?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. Once we have diagnosed the fault we quote the full cost of the work before we start, with any parts quoted separately, and nothing proceeds until you have approved it.
