Intercom wiring faults are the most labour-intensive problems in door entry work, and also the most frequently misdiagnosed. A system with a wiring fault can behave like almost anything: no sound, no video, intermittent connection, phantom calls or a door that will not release. That is why proper testing with proper instruments matters more here than anywhere else in the system.

How intercom wiring fails

Corrosion at terminations is the most common failure. Intercom cables terminate at the panel, at junction boxes, at distribution modules and at each handset, and over years the connections oxidise — especially in damp communal areas, unheated stairwells and external panels. Corroded joints develop resistance, and intercom signals degrade measurably long before the connection fails completely. Cable damage comes next: runs snagged during building work, crushed under floors or behind new fittings, nibbled by rodents, or degraded by decades of temperature cycling. Old systems may have joints made with insulation tape or connector blocks never intended for the environment. Occasionally the fault is a wiring error from a previous repair or modification — a swapped pair can cause symptoms that defy common sense until the cable is traced core by core.

How we test and trace

We begin by isolating the fault to a section of the system — one flat or many, one cable run or the whole riser — using the system's architecture and the pattern of symptoms. Then we test the cabling with proper instruments: continuity and resistance on each core, insulation between cores, and signal presence where the system carries audio and video. Suspected runs are traced end to end, and terminations are opened, inspected and re-made. Where a fault sits inside a wall or floor and cannot be reached, we measure what is possible from accessible points and tell you exactly what that implies before any invasive work is considered. Access to communal risers and panels needs landlord or managing agent permission, which we will help you arrange.

Repairs and the rewiring question

Many wiring faults are fixed at the terminals: cleaning and re-terminating joints, replacing corroded connector blocks, and remaking connections properly. Damaged accessible runs are repaired or replaced. Where cable inside walls or ducts has failed beyond recovery, the honest options are a new cable route — surface-mounted neatly, or channelled and made good — or, on very old systems, rewiring as part of a broader system replacement. This is quoted as a distinct job after survey, not as an open-ended hourly exercise: you will know what the work involves and what it costs before we start. Parts and cable are quoted separately, and the full cost of any repair is approved before work begins.

Why this is not DIY

Intercom cabling is low voltage but interconnected — a misidentified core can silence the whole system, and remade joints with the wrong technique create the very faults we are describing. Tracing requires instruments and system knowledge. If you suspect wiring, resist the urge to open junction boxes or re-make connections; note the symptoms instead.

Honest expectations

Wiring faults take longer to find than equipment faults, and the estimate reflects investigation time as well as repair time. Some faults sit in inaccessible runs and we will tell you when the practical answer is a new cable route rather than a repair of the old one. We diagnose before quoting, so no price can be promised before testing.

When to book

Book when equipment has been checked or replaced and problems persist, when symptoms affect multiple flats, when faults followed building or electrical work in the building, or when an old system has become generally unreliable. Tell us the system's age, how many flats share it, and what has already been tried.

Wiring faults reward patience and proper instruments. Get in touch and we will test the cabling properly, tell you plainly what we found, and quote the fix before we start.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Wiring is the one part of an intercom system nobody sees, which is why faults in it get blamed on the handset or the panel. When the equipment checks out but problems persist, the cabling is the usual suspect. We test it properly with the right instruments, trace runs through the building, and quote repairs — or rewiring where that is the honest answer — before starting.

What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service

5 out of 5 from 7 reviews

Would use again

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Job: CCTV Installation

Second time we have used them

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Backup Battery Fault

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about faulty intercom wiring

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I check intercom wiring myself?

Reseating a plug-in handset and noting symptoms are the safe limits. Do not open junction boxes or re-make connections — intercom systems are interconnected and a misidentified core can silence the whole building's system. Testing and tracing need proper instruments.

How do you find a fault in hidden wiring?

We isolate the fault to a cable run using the symptom pattern, then test each core for continuity, resistance and insulation with proper instruments, tracing runs end to end from accessible points. If the fault is unreachable we explain the options — usually a new cable route — before any invasive work.

Could faulty wiring affect other things in my home?

Intercom cabling is a dedicated, low-voltage system and does not share circuits with your mains wiring, so an intercom fault will not affect your electrics. Conversely, recent electrical or building work can disturb intercom cable runs — tell us if any has happened.

Is rewiring a big job?

It can be — new cable routes through a building are quoted as a distinct project after a survey, with the route, making good and cost set out clearly before anything starts. Many wiring faults, though, are fixed at the terminals in a single visit, which we will confirm during diagnosis.

What does wiring fault diagnosis cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. Testing time is part of the job; once we have found the fault, the full repair cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with cable and parts quoted separately.
