When a stair lift stops working, life at home changes overnight. The upstairs rooms you move around without thinking become difficult to reach, and a flight of stairs you had learned to ignore becomes the main obstacle of the day. The good news is that a stair lift that has stopped is very often repairable, and most faults trace back to a small number of causes that an experienced engineer can find quickly.

Why stair lifts stop working

The most common reason is simple: the lift is not parked correctly on its charging points at the top or bottom of the rail. Stair lifts are designed not to move when the batteries run low, as a safety measure, so a lift left slightly off its park position overnight can appear completely dead the next morning. Other frequent causes include a flat or worn-out battery pack, a tripped or switched-off isolation switch, a blown fuse, a faulty key switch, a seat or footplate not locked in its travel position, or one of the safety edges on the footplate being held or obstructed. Beyond those, faults can sit in the control board, the drive mechanism, the limit switches or the wiring itself — the kind of work that needs a competent engineer rather than guesswork.

How we assess the fault

Our visit starts with the basics, because that is where most answers are. We check that the lift is on its charge points, test the mains supply and isolation switch, look at the status codes or indicator lights your lift displays, and check whether the batteries hold charge under load. We then test the seat, armrest and footplate sensors one by one, run the lift through a full travel cycle where it is safe to do so, and inspect the rail, rollers and drive unit for wear or damage. Throughout, we talk you through what we are doing so you can see and hear what a healthy lift should do.

Repair, part replacement or replacement lift

Many faults are resolved with a minor adjustment, a new fuse, a re seated connector or a replacement battery — batteries are a normal consumable on stair lifts and we fit manufacturer-approved parts. Where a component such as a control board, joystick or drive unit has failed, we will tell you honestly whether repair is worthwhile. If a lift is old, obsolete or the repair cost approaches the price of a new unit, we will say so, and we can quote for a replacement installation separately. We never promise a repair time or a part being in stock before we have diagnosed the fault, and every cost is quoted and approved by you before work starts.

Safety first — especially if someone is stuck

If your lift has stopped with a person seated on it, stay calm. First make sure the person is safe, comfortable and not in distress; loosen tight clothing, keep them warm and talk to them. If they are in pain, frightened or unwell, call 999. Some lifts have a manual release or emergency lowering feature — use it strictly according to the manufacturer's instructions, and only if a confident person can follow those steps safely. Never climb underneath the lift, push it, or force a suspended lift to move. If the lift behaves erratically, trips the electrics or smells of burning, do not use it again until it has been checked.

Aftercare and prevention

Once your lift is working, a few habits prevent repeat failures: park the lift squarely on its charging points every time, keep the rail clear of clutter and carpets, and wipe — never soak — the seat and rail when cleaning. An annual service keeps batteries, rollers and safety sensors in good order and usually spots problems before they stop you mid-journey.

Booking your visit

Call us or use the website contact form to arrange a visit, and tell us the make and model of the lift if you can, roughly when it stopped working, and anything unusual you noticed beforehand. Booking is straightforward: you pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged at an hourly rate that depends on how soon you need us, and the full cost is quoted and approved by you before any work begins, with parts quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A stair lift that suddenly stops working is more than an inconvenience — it can cut you off from a whole floor of your own home. Our engineers arrive ready to test the power supply, controls, safety switches and drive system, and we will always explain what we find in plain English before asking you to approve any cost.

What our customers say about our mobility & accessibility service

4.5 out of 5 from 8 reviews

Proper job, no upselling

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the old fitting was seized and needed careful removal), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Loose or Faulty Brakes

Fine in the end

The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.

Job: Stair Lift Service

Would use again

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 70 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about stair lift not working

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is there anything I can safely try before calling you out?

Yes — check the lift is parked correctly on its charging points, make sure the isolation or on/off switch is on, and confirm the key switch is turned to the on position. Check for anything resting against the footplate's safety edges. Beyond those checks and a look at the manual, leave the internals to an engineer.

What will your engineer actually check on the visit?

We test the mains supply, isolation switch, batteries and charging contacts, read any fault or status codes, check the seat, footplate and armrest sensors, and inspect the rail, rollers and drive system. We then run the lift through a full travel cycle if it is safe to do so and explain exactly what we found.

Can we keep using the lift in the meantime if it only fails sometimes?

No. A lift that has stopped working, behaves erratically, trips the electrics or smells of burning should not be used until it has been checked and repaired. If it stops with someone on board, keep them safe and comfortable, call 999 if they are in distress, and only attempt a manual release strictly per the manufacturer's instructions.

Our lift is quite old — will you still look at it?

We will, and we will be honest about what we find. Some older models have parts that are no longer manufactured, in which case we will explain your options, including a replacement lift, rather than sell you a repair that cannot last. Any decision is yours, made with a clear quote in front of you.

How does pricing work for a stair lift repair?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. Once we have diagnosed the fault we quote the full cost of the work, which you approve before we start; any parts needed are quoted separately.
