Hot-water cylinders store heated water, so a fault can affect temperature, availability and the safety of the surrounding area. Signs may include water around the cylinder, hot water that runs out unusually quickly, visible corrosion, or controls that no longer behave as expected. Maintenance Men assesses the cylinder’s visible condition, accessible thermostat and timer, immersion arrangement and connected water-side pipework. We do not assume a cylinder must be replaced from one symptom alone. If a gas boiler’s combustion or gas side is implicated, we do not work on that side and refer it to a trusted Gas Safe registered partner.

Make a leak or electrical risk the priority

If water is escaping, keep people away from the wet area and do not touch electrical equipment, switches or cables that may be wet. Isolate power only if the switch is safely reachable from a dry location and you know which circuit it controls; otherwise leave it alone and seek assistance. Do not climb onto a tank, remove a cylinder jacket or open electrical covers. A small amount of condensation may be different from an active leak, but do not assume: describe where water appears and whether it is increasing. If the cylinder is in a cupboard or loft, avoid entering an unsafe space to inspect it.

Identify the cylinder and the reported change

We ask whether the issue is leakage, lukewarm water, insufficient volume, unusual noise or a control that trips. The cylinder make, model and approximate age can be useful if visible safely, as can information about the heat source and whether an immersion is fitted. We assess the outside, accessible connections, visible signs of corrosion, controls and relevant pipework. The internal condition cannot always be confirmed from an external inspection, and some systems require further tests. We explain what is known and what remains uncertain rather than present an estimate as a definitive diagnosis.

Repair and replacement are different decisions

A thermostat, immersion element, valve or accessible connection may be repairable without replacing the cylinder, while a leaking vessel or badly deteriorated cylinder may need replacement. A replacement must suit the property, existing pipework, available space, access route and heating arrangement. We can outline those considerations and quote the agreed scope. Materials, parts and any cylinder are identified and quoted separately; availability and delivery affect scheduling. Replacement may require additional plumbing or electrical work and may be staged. The initial appointment is not a promise to complete a full installation or to include components that have not been agreed.

Keep temperature and stored water in mind

Stored hot water presents scald risk, and a cylinder’s insulation, controls and safety devices should not be altered casually. Do not bypass a thermostat, remove insulation or discharge water from a safety outlet. If temperature becomes unexpectedly high, warn household members and avoid using affected taps without care. We assess suitable electrical work only within competence and safe isolation. A gas-linked heat source has separate boundaries: we may assess non-gas water-side components but never open or repair gas appliance components. Suspected gas-side problems go to our trusted Gas Safe partner.

Arrange the right assessment

Book online and specify whether you see a leak, what the water does, where the cylinder is located and whether it has an immersion heater. Include safely visible model details and access limitations. The booking fee is paid when booking; the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We give the full cost for approval before work begins. Parts and materials can be quoted separately. If a larger cylinder replacement is appropriate, we explain the defined scope and whether further survey or staged work is needed.

Book online for a cylinder assessment, and clearly flag any leak or water near electrical equipment.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A cylinder fault can mean a leak, poor heat retention, inconsistent temperature or a control problem, and each calls for a different response. We assess visible condition and connected controls before advising on repair or replacement. If the cylinder is leaking or water is near electrics, keep clear and tell us when arranging help.

What our customers say about our heating & radiators service

5 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Fast, tidy and friendly

Booked the £220 booking-fee slot on Tuesday and got a message confirming the time the same morning. The cause was explained, the price agreed before any work started, and the job was done in about 46 minutes. Clean and tidy when they left.

Job: No Heating from Boiler

Turned up when they said

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 46 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Job: Expansion Vessel Fault

Exactly what was quoted

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Questions people ask about hot water cylinder fault

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

What should I do if the cylinder is leaking?

Keep clear of water near electrical equipment and isolate power only if the switch is safely accessible from a dry place. Do not enter an unsafe loft or remove covers; report the leak promptly.

What is checked during a cylinder assessment?

We inspect visible cylinder condition, accessible controls, immersion arrangement and connected water-side pipework. Internal condition or hidden faults may need further checks.

Can every cylinder fault be repaired?

No. A control or accessible connection may be repairable, while a leaking vessel may require replacement. We explain the findings and quote the appropriate scope.

Does a cylinder replacement include every new part?

No parts are assumed included. We identify and quote the cylinder, materials and agreed work separately, taking compatibility, access and availability into account.

How does pricing work for the assessment?

The booking fee is paid when booking, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We provide the full cost for approval before work begins; materials or parts are quoted separately.
