A desk that works as hard as you do

Wobble in a desk is not a small flaw — it transfers to the monitor, the keyboard and eventually your concentration. Office desks also carry more than they look like they should: monitors, a PC or laptop, printers, drawers full of kit. Assembled properly with every fixing tight, a desk is silent and solid; assembled casually, it clicks and shifts every time you lean on it, and you will notice every single working day.

Desks we assemble

Straight desks, L-shaped and corner desks, desks with returning drawer pedestals, sit-stand frames, and trestle or beam designs. Each changes the work: an L-shaped desk has joints and support legs that must align across two planes, a drawer pedestal has runners to set true, and a sit-stand frame has telescoping legs, a crossbar and a control unit that must be mounted square or the top will not rise evenly. We follow your desk's instructions rather than a generic routine.

How the build runs

Unpack, check against the parts list, and build in the room where the desk will live — assembled desks are worse than boxes to carry around a house. The frame goes up first, square and tightened properly, then the top is laid, levelled and fixed. Drawers and cable trays follow, with runners aligned so they glide even with a loaded drawer, and fixings are re-checked once everything is on, because tops pull frames square as they go on. The last check is the one that matters: we press the desk the way a working day will.

Power, cables and motors

Where a desk has cable ports, grommets or an integrated socket strip, we fit them as designed and route cables non-invasively — clips, trays and trunking — without touching the wiring itself. Motorised sit-stand frames are assembled and their control units mounted per the manufacturer's instructions, plugged into a normal socket and tested through a full up-and-down cycle. Anything beyond plugging in and mounting, such as fixed electrical installation, is not handyman work, and we will say so plainly rather than blur the line.

Planning your layout

A desk's position is worth deciding properly: natural light from the side rather than behind the screen, within reach of the sockets the setup actually needs, and with chair space behind it that does not fight a door. For sit-stand frames, check clearance above and below — shelves, window sills and wall fittings are the usual obstructions. Tell us which way the pedestal drawer should face before we start, because changing it later means rebuilding. We will help settle the layout on site and build to it, so the finished desk suits how you actually work.

Where the desk sits on carpet, tell us — some sit-stand frames need their feet set carefully to stay stable at full height, and that is far easier to plan before the frame goes up than after. A desk lamp, power strip or monitor riser can be positioned in the same visit if they are out of their boxes.

After booking

Clear the corner of the room where the desk will stand and have the cartons nearby; tell us about stairs and tight turns when you book. If parts are missing or damaged, flag it in advance so we can assess what can reasonably be done and whether the manufacturer needs to send replacements, which you would order separately. Book by calling Maintenance Men — same-day may be available. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is hourly depending on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is agreed with you before work starts. We are fully insured across the West Midlands.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Questions people ask about office desk assembly

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is desk assembly worth doing myself?

A simple straight desk is one of the fairer flat pack jobs, and if you have the tools and patience it is doable. L-shaped desks, pedestal drawers and sit-stand frames are where self-assembly goes wrong — alignment across two planes and runner adjustment reward experience. If the desk is the centre of your working day, having it built square and tight is worth the call.

What do you check while assembling a desk?

We check the parts against the manufacturer's list first, then keep the frame square as it goes up, because the top and everything on it inherits any twist. Tops are levelled, drawers are aligned so they glide with a real load in them, and fixings are re-tightened once the desk is complete. We finish by loading and pressing the desk as a working day would.

Can you set up a motorised sit-stand desk?

Yes — we assemble the frame, mount the control unit per the manufacturer's instructions, plug it into a normal socket and test a full up-and-down cycle, checking the top rises evenly. What we do not do is any fixed electrical work beyond plugging in, and we are upfront about that boundary. If the desk needs anything electrical beyond a plug, that belongs to a qualified trade.

Can you fit a monitor arm to the desk in the same visit?

Usually, yes — a clamp or grommet-mounted monitor arm fitted to the desk per its instructions is a natural part of the same job, and it is worth mentioning when you book so we plan the time. What sits outside that is wall-mounting the monitor, which is a separate assessment of the wall itself. Tell us the full list and we will quote the visit honestly.

How is desk assembly priced?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is hourly — the rate depends on how soon you need the visit. Before work starts, the full cost is quoted and you approve it, so the price reflects your actual desk rather than a guess. Any parts the manufacturer needs to supply are identified and quoted separately.
