Why an outdoor socket can fail
Outdoor sockets have to cope with conditions that indoor outlets do not: rain, condensation, dirt, sunlight, temperature changes and accidental knocks. A damaged seal or cover can let moisture reach the accessory, while a loose connection or deteriorated cable can cause an intermittent supply. Sometimes the outdoor outlet is sound but a circuit breaker or RCD has tripped because water or a faulty appliance has affected the circuit. The socket should not be assumed safe just because it looks dry from the outside.
A fault may appear after heavy rain, after garden equipment has been used, or when an appliance is connected. Those details help the electrician narrow down the checks. Avoid plugging in a different tool to see whether it works if the socket has been exposed to water, looks cracked or shows signs of heat. If you smell burning, see sparks or find water inside the cover, stop using it and switch off the relevant circuit if safe.
The role of the cover and installation
Outdoor socket accessories are designed with protection against the environment, but the level of protection depends on the product, its condition and how it has been installed. A lid left open, a damaged gasket, a missing seal or an unsuitable position can allow water in. Even an intact cover may not protect an outlet from every exposure, especially if it faces direct weather or is used while equipment is connected in wet conditions.
The cable route and entry points also matter. Water can track along a cable or enter through a poorly sealed opening. The electrician checks the accessory, cable entry and visible wiring, as well as the indoor point or protective device supplying it where needed. If the installation's location or protection is not suitable for how you use it, the repair may involve changing the accessory or position rather than simply replacing the socket faceplate.
How we diagnose the fault
We begin by asking when the socket stopped working, whether a breaker or RCD tripped and what equipment was connected. The electrician inspects the cover, housing, seals, socket and surrounding wall for damage, moisture and corrosion. If the circuit has tripped, it is not reset repeatedly; the cause needs to be checked. With the supply safely isolated, the electrician uses suitable test equipment to assess the outdoor accessory and the wiring that feeds it.
Depending on the results, checks may extend to the indoor circuit, a junction or another accessory. A fault to earth, damaged insulation, a loose connection and a failed outlet can produce similar symptoms but require different repairs. We explain what the testing has established and whether access to a cable route or connection point is needed. If the outdoor socket is wet, it may need time to dry and further checks before it can be safely returned to service.
Repair choices
A sound cable with a failed or damaged outdoor accessory may need a suitable replacement, with covers and seals fitted correctly. If moisture has affected wiring or a connection, that part may need repair or replacement as well. A damaged cable may require a new route or access through a wall or other surface. We will discuss the route and any making-good before work starts. If the problem is a faulty garden appliance, we will identify the findings so you can have the equipment checked separately.
After the repair, the electrician checks the socket and relevant circuit, including the operation of its protective devices as appropriate. RCD protection is particularly relevant for outdoor supplies, but an RCD that trips should not simply be bypassed or replaced without finding out why. We will tell you if the circuit needs additional attention and agree any further work with you.
Reducing repeat faults
Keep the lid closed when the socket is not in use and check that its seal is not torn or displaced. Use outdoor equipment and extension leads intended for outdoor conditions, and keep connections away from standing water. Do not leave a plug connected if the arrangement allows rain to reach the outlet, unless the socket is designed and positioned for that use. If the cover no longer closes properly, arrange a repair before the next wet spell.
When to call us
Book an inspection if the outdoor socket will not work, repeatedly trips a circuit or has a damaged cover. Treat visible moisture inside, burning smells, hot fittings or sparks as urgent; do not touch a wet accessory. Switch off the circuit from a dry, safe position if you can identify it. Same-day or emergency appointments may be available depending on demand.

Questions people ask about outdoor socket fault
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I reset the breaker and try the outdoor socket again?
If the socket may be wet or damaged, do not keep resetting the circuit or plugging equipment in. Leave it switched off if safe and have the outlet and circuit checked first.
What will the electrician inspect?
They will check the socket housing, lid, seals, cable entry and visible wiring, then test the outlet and supplying circuit as needed. If an RCD has tripped, they will investigate the cause rather than simply bypass it.
Is a wet outdoor socket dangerous?
Moisture can create a fault or make an accessory unsafe to touch. Do not handle a wet socket; switch off its circuit from a dry, safe location if possible and arrange urgent electrical help.
Can rain make an outdoor socket stop working?
Yes, water can enter through damaged covers, seals or cable entries, and moisture may cause a protective device to trip. The electrician needs to check both the socket and the circuit before it is used again.
How is the cost worked out?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
