A Silent Detector Is an Unprotected Home
Gas detectors earn their place on the wall the same way smoke alarms do: by doing nothing, day after day, until the one moment they must work. A detector that's dark, silent on test, or dropping in and out of your interlinked alarm system has quietly failed at that one job, and it needs someone to work out why.
The important distinction to understand is what's electrical and what isn't. A gas detector is an electrical device — it needs power, it needs sound connections, and in many homes it's wired into the same interlinked alarm system as your smoke and heat alarms. Power supplies, wiring, mounting connections, interlinking and the detector unit itself: that's all electrical work, and that's what we diagnose and repair. If the detector has done its job and there's any suspicion of an actual gas leak, that's a gas-emergency matter for the gas emergency service — not something we handle and not something to wait on.
Why Gas Detectors Stop Working
Power first. A mains-wired gas detector can go dark for the same reasons any ceiling device does: a tripped breaker on its circuit, a failed connection behind the mounting plate, or a blown supply that nobody noticed. Battery and battery-backup models can suffer a flat or leaking battery, corroded contacts or a backup battery that's been quietly dead for months.
Detectors also age. Like CO alarms, gas detectors rely on a sensor that degrades over time, and units have a designed service life — often around five to ten years depending on the type. An expired detector can look completely normal and still be sensing little or nothing, which is why the manufacture date on the body matters more than whether the test button chirps.
And then there's the interlink. In a system where the gas detector triggers the house alarms, a fault in the link wiring or a mounting connection can leave the detector alive but isolated — beeping in one room, silent everywhere else. That partial failure is easy to miss and easy to misread.
If You Suspect Gas — Stop and Act First
One rule before anything else. If you can smell gas, hear hissing from an appliance or pipe, or your gas detector is actually sounding its gas alarm, don't book a repair — act now. Open doors and windows, don't operate light switches or anything electrical, extinguish flames, leave the property if the smell is strong, and call the national gas emergency service on 0800 111 999. A sounding gas alarm is a gas-emergency situation, and the right responder is the gas emergency service, every time.
What we do is the electrical layer: making sure the detector has power, that its connections are sound, that it will trigger the rest of your alarms, and that the unit itself is within its service life. If a detector keeps activating when nothing is wrong electrically, the appliance-side investigation belongs with a gas-safe engineer — we'll tell you that plainly rather than pretending otherwise.
How We Diagnose the Electrical Side
We start with power: is there supply at the ceiling, is the breaker on, are the backup batteries alive? Then the connections — mounting plate contacts, terminals behind the unit, and the interlink wiring to the rest of the alarm system. We check the manufacture date against the detector's service life, test the unit's self-test and interlink activation, and verify that if it detects, it triggers everything it's supposed to trigger.
You'll finish the diagnosis knowing exactly which layer failed: supply, connection, battery, interlink or the unit itself — and what putting it right involves.
How We Fix It
Most electrical faults are same-visit repairs: a reset breaker, a re-made connection, fresh batteries of the correct type, a cleaned and re-seated mounting. If the interlink is at fault, we repair the wiring and prove the chain — detector activated, every alarm in the house responding.
If the detector unit itself has expired or failed, we replace it with a correct equivalent: same technology, correct position, wired into your interlink if the old one was. And before we leave, we test the whole system so you know the detector, its power and its links are all live together.
Aftercare
Gas detectors get forgotten because they rarely speak. We'll show you the monthly test, note the replacement date, and — if your detector is part of a bigger alarm system — make sure it's included in your regular alarm testing rather than sitting outside it.
When to Call Us
Book us if the detector is dark or silent on test, if it has dropped out of your interlinked alarms, if a battery change hasn't revived it, or if it's past its expiry date. And if you ever smell gas or hear the detector sounding for real — that's the gas emergency service on 0800 111 999 first, always.
Book Your Gas Detector Repair Today
Sorting the electrical side of a gas detector is usually a single visit that restores a protection layer that's easy to take for granted. Call Maintenance Men or book online — same-day slots are often available for detector faults — and we'll have the power, wiring and interlink tested and sorted, so the unit on your wall is genuinely on duty again.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A gas detector that's gone dark or stopped responding leaves you without a warning you'd rather never need, and the first question is whether the fault is the unit itself or the electrical setup behind it — its power supply, its connections, its place in your interlinked alarms. That electrical side is exactly what we handle. We diagnose the fault, repair or replace what's needed and test the detector end to end.
What our customers say about our electrical service

Does what it says on the tin
No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.
Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights
Turned up when they said
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about gas detector not working
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I repair a gas detector myself?
You can try a fresh battery and check that it's seated firmly on its base — that fixes some faults. Beyond that, leave it: mains connections and interlink wiring aren't DIY territory, and a gas detector is too important to have its electrical side bodged. A unit past its expiry date needs replacing, not fiddling with.
What will the engineer actually check?
The electrical side: power at the ceiling, breakers and supply, the batteries and backup battery, the mounting connections, and the interlink wiring to your other alarms. We also check the unit's manufacture date against its service life and prove that it triggers the whole system when tested.
My gas detector is alarming right now. What should I do?
Treat it as a gas emergency, not an electrical fault: open doors and windows, don't touch light switches or electrical equipment, extinguish any flames, leave the property if the smell is strong and call the national gas emergency service on 0800 111 999. Once the all-clear is given, we can sort out any electrical fault with the detector afterwards.
How much does it cost to fix a gas detector's electrics?
There's a booking fee when you book, and the engineer's time is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. We diagnose the fault first and agree the full cost with you before starting any repair, so you approve the price before the work happens.
Do you service the gas appliances or pipework too?
No — the appliance and pipework side is a matter for a gas-registered engineer, and any suspected leak is one for the gas emergency service. Our work is strictly the electrical layer: the detector's power, wiring, connections, interlinking and the unit's own condition. We'll always tell you clearly if a problem needs the gas side of things instead.
