When the whole home goes dark
A complete loss of electricity can come from a local network interruption, a problem with the service entering the property, or a fault in the consumer unit or wiring. A main switch may have moved, a protective device may have detected a fault, or a damaged connection may have interrupted the supply. Sometimes a single fault affects the whole installation; sometimes the timing makes an external cut look like an internal failure. Avoid repeatedly operating switches until the cause is clearer.
First checks: property or street?
The engineer starts by asking when the outage began, whether it followed a storm, building work or an appliance being switched on, and whether neighbours have also lost power. They can check the meter and incoming supply using appropriate test equipment, then inspect the consumer unit and isolate circuits as needed. If surrounding homes are also affected and the supply appears absent before it reaches your installation, the likely next step is to contact the electricity network operator. If the supply reaches the meter but not the home, investigation continues on the property side.
Tracing a fault inside the installation
Where the external supply is present, the engineer checks the main switch, protective devices and accessible wiring for signs of damage, overheating, loose connections or a circuit fault. Circuits can be separated and tested in a controlled sequence to find whether a fault is confined to one area or affects the entire board. The check is based on measurements and inspection, not simply on replacing the first switch that looks unusual. If opening a fitting or section of wiring is necessary, the affected circuit is made safe first.
Restoring power without hiding the cause
The repair depends on the result. A failed protective device or connection may need replacement; damaged wiring may need repair or isolation; a fault linked to one circuit can sometimes be contained so other circuits can operate while a fuller repair is arranged. The engineer explains what has failed and what options are safe before starting chargeable work. Power is restored only after relevant checks show the repair is safe. If the source is an area supply fault, the network operator must restore it; an in-home electrician cannot repair the street network.
What you can do while you wait
Keep the consumer unit accessible and note which lights, sockets or fixed equipment have stopped working. If safe, unplug portable appliances and switch off equipment that was running when the outage began, but do not remove the consumer-unit cover or touch exposed conductors. If you notice a burning smell, visible damage, buzzing or heat at the board, keep clear. You can switch off the main switch only if it is safe to reach; otherwise leave it alone and book urgent help. Use torches rather than candles, especially near curtains or children.
Checks before the engineer leaves
After repair, the electrician checks the relevant circuit operation and protective device response, then confirms which equipment can be reconnected. Do not reconnect a suspect appliance simply to see whether it trips again; repeated trips indicate a problem that needs diagnosis. Ask what was found, what remains isolated and whether another visit is needed. If an external outage is confirmed, report it to the network operator and follow its updates; keep the engineer's findings to help distinguish a local issue if the symptoms change after supply returns.
Book a power-loss visit
If your home has no power and the cause is not clear, arrange an electrician to check the installation and incoming supply safely. Same-day and emergency appointments may be available. A booking fee is paid when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate based on how quickly you need the visit. You will receive the full cost of the work before it starts, so you can approve it before any tools come out.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
When every light and socket goes off, it is hard to know whether the fault is inside your home or coming from outside. We check the supply, consumer unit and circuits in a safe order, then make the repair needed to restore power or explain who needs to act if the network is at fault.
What our customers say about our electrical service
4.6 out of 5 from 11 reviews
Does what it says on the tin
No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.
Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights
Turned up when they said
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.
Job: Appliance Causing Power Trip

Questions people ask about no power in property
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I reset the main switch myself?
Only try a reset if the board is cool, dry and undamaged and you know what caused the trip. If it will not stay on, or there is heat, a burning smell or visible damage, leave it alone and book an electrician.
What will the electrician check when the whole house has no power?
They will check whether supply reaches the meter and consumer unit, ask whether neighbours are affected, and test the main switch and circuits. This helps separate a local network interruption from a fault inside your home.
Is it dangerous to have no power?
The outage itself is not necessarily dangerous, but an electrical fault causing it may be. Keep clear of hot or damaged equipment, use torches rather than candles, and report any smell, sparks or smoke urgently.
What if my neighbours have power but I do not?
That makes a property-specific supply or installation fault more likely, though it does not prove the cause. An electrician can check the meter-side supply and consumer unit, then explain who is responsible for any external service fault.')],
How is the visit and repair charged?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
