How Wiring Ends Up Exposed
Exposed outdoor wiring usually has a story behind it. Common routes to exposure include:
- A fitting that has broken or fallen — a light or socket knocked off the wall leaves its cable hanging and its connections open to the weather.
- Removed or failed covers — blanking plates, gland covers and fitting lids crack in frost or are lost during earlier DIY, leaving live parts reachable.
- Cable clipped along fences and walls — surface-run cable without proper protection gets caught by ladders, strimmers, garden tools and animals until the sheath splits.
- Abandoned equipment — an old pump, heater or light disconnected but never properly removed, leaving a live cable end loose somewhere in the garden.
- Botched earlier work — joints in tape, connectors sitting in soil, or cable run through a hedge, all of which count as exposed even when they "work".
Why This Is a Safety Issue, Not a Cosmetic One
Exposed conductors can be touched, and outdoors that risk is amplified by wet ground, wet hands and metal garden furniture, all of which make a shock more dangerous. The weather attacks the insulation as well: UV makes it brittle, frost cracks it, and water gets into every opening. A cable end left loose in the garden is live until proven otherwise. Until we arrive, keep everyone away from the exposed wiring and, if the cable is damaged or its fitting is missing, switch the circuit off at the consumer unit if you can do so safely. Do not attempt to tape, tie or trim anything.
How We Assess It
We confirm which circuit the exposed wiring belongs to and isolate it while we work. Then we establish how far the problem runs: whether the damage is a short section or a whole run, whether anything live is currently reachable, and whether the installation behind it — the protective devices, the earthing, the cable size — is adequate for a proper repair. Some exposure is best fixed by refitting the original equipment; some by replacing the run; some by relocating it altogether. You will be shown the options and given a firm price for the one you choose.
How We Fix It
The aim is simple: no accessible live parts, no weather-exposed conductors. We repair or replace damaged cable, terminating it into proper weather-rated enclosures with sound glands. Missing covers and broken fittings are replaced with quality weatherproof (IP-rated) equipment. Surface-run cable that keeps getting knocked is rerouted, clipped correctly, or enclosed in suitable conduit so tools and weather cannot reach it. Abandoned cables are traced, made dead and removed properly rather than left taped at the end. Everything is tested before the circuit goes back on.
Aftercare and Prevention
A quick look around the garden now and then catches exposure early: a fitting hanging by its cable, a lid missing, a sheath scuffed where the strimmer reached. Report any of these before the weather turns them into faults. If you are planning garden work — fencing, decking, new beds — ask us to check or reroute cable that will be in the way beforehand; moving a cable costs far less than repairing one a spade has found.
When to Call Us
Call urgently if live parts are exposed and reachable, if the cable is damaged or its sheath is split, or if children or pets play near the area. Book a routine visit for weathered fittings, untidy surface cable that is still intact, or old equipment you would like removed properly. Either way, treat exposed wiring as a job for the near future, not the someday list.
Book Your Exposed Wiring Repair Today
We cover the West Midlands and can usually attend exposed outdoor wiring quickly, with same-day and urgent slots where available. Call or book online and tell us what is exposed, where, and whether anything is damaged — if you are unsure whether the cable is live, describe what it is connected to and we will advise on the phone. We will make it safe and keep it that way.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Wiring that you can see outside — bare cable, a missing fitting cover, a joint wrapped in tape — should never be part of a working electrical system. It is exposed to rain, frost, sunlight and accidental contact, and it degrades faster than anyone expects. We assess the exposed section, make it safe immediately, and enclose or reroute it so the cable is protected for good.

Does what it says on the tin
No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.
Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Turned up when they said
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about exposed outdoor wiring
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Is exposed wiring dangerous even if nothing is wrong with it?
It is a real risk. Outdoors, people touch things with wet hands, stand on wet ground and work with metal tools, so any exposed conductor is far more dangerous than indoors. The weather also degrades the insulation quickly. Even cable that looks intact should be enclosed, rerouted or removed properly rather than left as it is.
Can I just tape over the exposed section myself?
Please don't. Tape is not weather protection — it lifts with damp and sun, and it can hide a deteriorating cable while giving false confidence. Worse, taping often means handling something that may be live. Leave the cable alone, keep people away from it, and switch the circuit off at the consumer unit if it is damaged.
What will the engineer do about it?
We isolate the circuit, trace where the exposed wiring runs and test its condition, then either refit the missing equipment, replace the damaged section, or reroute and protect the cable properly. Everything is enclosed in weather-rated fittings or conduit, tested, and signed off before power is restored. You approve the plan and price first.
How much will this cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
Could the exposed cable just be disconnected instead?
Sometimes that is the cleanest answer, especially for abandoned equipment — we trace it, confirm it is dead, and remove the whole run rather than leaving a taped end in the garden. If the cable still serves something you want to keep, we protect and refit it instead. We will recommend whichever suits the situation.
