A light switch is the most-used electrical component in most homes, and it gets almost no respect. Thousands of clicks a year, decades of service, and nobody thinks about it until the day it stops responding. When that day comes, the question is always the same: is it the switch itself, or has something upstream of it died? Answering that properly is the job — and it's a quicker one than most people fear.
Why Switches Stop Working
The mechanism itself wears out. Inside every switch is a contact set that opens and closes the circuit, and after years of use the contacts pit, the spring weakens and the action changes — you often notice this before outright failure, as a switch that feels spongy or needs a firmer press. Eventually it clicks but does nothing.
Loose terminations are the other everyday failure. The conductors into the back of a switch work loose over time — especially in switches that have been disturbed during decorating — and a loose live feed means the switch has nothing to pass on. The third possibility isn't the switch at all: a tripped breaker, a failed connection further up the circuit, or a blown bulb can all present as "the switch doesn't work" when the switch is perfectly healthy.
First Checks Worth Doing
Before booking anything, try a bulb that you know works in the fitting — it removes the most common false alarm. Then check your consumer unit: if the lighting circuit breaker has tripped, resetting it once may restore everything, switch included. And note how the switch feels: a dead silence and a normal click suggests the mechanism is fine and the problem is upstream; a mushy click, or one that crackles faintly as you operate it, points at the switch itself.
What you shouldn't do is unscrew the switch plate to look inside. Switches stay live at all times — unlike fittings, which go dead when their lamp is out — and the terminals behind the plate have no protection between them and your fingers.
How We Diagnose It
With safe test equipment, the diagnosis is quick and definitive. The engineer confirms the circuit is live at the consumer unit, then tests for voltage at the switch's supply terminal. Power arriving but not leaving when the switch operates means the mechanism has failed. No power arriving at all sends the search upstream — to the ceiling rose, a junction or the circuit itself. If the switch tests fine electrically, we move to the fitting it controls, because "switch fault" is often actually "failed lamp holder" in disguise.
We also inspect what we find for heat damage. A switch that has been arcing internally leaves scorch marks, and we treat that evidence seriously — a burnt-out switch is sometimes the visible end of a connection problem worth checking further.
The Repair
A failed switch is usually a twenty-minute job: isolate the circuit, swap the mechanism, re-test, done. We match the faceplate to your décor where possible or reuse your existing plate if you'd prefer, and we check the conductors and terminals behind it while we're in there — remaking anything tired so the new switch starts life on solid foundations. If the real fault turns out to be elsewhere in the circuit, we'll trace and quote that before proceeding; the price you approve is the price you pay.
If you've been putting up with a two-way hall switch that only works from one end, or a switch that needs the exact right angle of press, that's the same repair — and worth doing before it fails completely.
Aftercare
A new switch should give you years of silent, reliable service. If you notice any switch becoming spongy, crackling faintly, or feeling warm under the plate, that's the early-warning stage — a cheap fix then, and a bigger job if left until it arcs.
When to Call Us
Call when a new bulb doesn't solve it, when the switch feels wrong rather than merely failing to work, when you hear any crackle from behind the plate, or when the switch and several lights all died together — that last one points at the circuit rather than the switch, and circuit faults need proper testing.
Book Your Switch Repair Today

How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
You flip the switch and nothing happens — no light, no click, maybe even a switch that feels different from how it used to. Switches fail more often than people expect, and the fix is usually quick once you know whether the fault is in the switch or somewhere beyond it. We test, replace what's failed, and leave you with a switch that works first time, every time.

Does what it says on the tin
No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.
Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights
Turned up when they said
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about light switch not working
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
What does it cost to have a switch replaced?
You pay a booking fee to reserve the appointment, then labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly we can get to you. The engineer confirms the diagnosis and gives you the full price before starting, so there's never a bill you haven't approved.
Can I replace a light switch myself?
We'd rather you didn't. Unlike a lamp, a switch stays permanently live — turning it off doesn't de-energise the terminals behind the plate, and the two conductors in there need to go back exactly as they came out. Isolating the circuit properly, testing it's dead and remaking the terminations is what we train for; a swapped wire on a two-way circuit can be a genuinely hazardous fault.
How do you tell a faulty switch from another fault?
We test for voltage at the switch's supply terminal with the cover off and the circuit isolated appropriately. If power arrives but nothing leaves when it operates, the mechanism has failed. If power never arrives, the fault is upstream — and we follow it back until we find the break. Guessing isn't part of the process.
Is a faulty switch dangerous?
A switch that merely clicks and does nothing is usually just worn out. The ones to treat with respect are switches that crackle, feel warm, or show browning around the plate — those symptoms suggest internal arcing, and arcing is a progressive fault. If your switch has any of those signs, keep using it as little as possible and book urgently.
Why does my two-way switch only work sometimes?
Two-way switching relies on a pair of switches wired in tandem, and a loose or incorrectly made connection at either end produces exactly that behaviour — working from one end, not the other, or intermittently. The fix is usually remaking a single termination, but identifying which of the two switches holds the fault takes proper testing.
