Replacing a hob is the most common way kitchens get upgraded, and it's a job where the visible part — old out, new in — is only half the work. The half that matters is what's underneath: a supply that suits the new appliance, connections made to specification, and a cut-out that takes the new unit properly. We do the whole job, in the right order, and hand over a hob that's been tested rather than assumed.

What the replacement covers

The visit runs in a fixed sequence. The old hob is safely isolated and removed — including dealing with sealants, clamps and awkward old wiring that half a decade of kitchen use has hardened in place. The supply is then checked: circuit rating, isolator condition and connection point. The cut-out is measured against the new hob, and the new unit is connected to the manufacturer's specification, secured, and tested zone by zone before we hand over. You get a walkthrough of the controls, and we remove the old appliance and packaging if you want.

When the replacement uncovers more

Half-visited kitchens have stories in their hobs: undersized supplies, scorched connections, cut-outs cut for a different shape. If we find anything that needs additional work — a supply upgrade, aperture adjustment, repairs to damaged wiring — we stop, explain it plainly and quote it separately for your approval. Nothing extra happens without you agreeing to the cost. A replacement is a defined visit; treating surprises as new quotes is how the price stays honest.

Gas hobs and the boundary that matters

If the hob being removed or installed is gas, its disconnection, reconnection and commissioning are gas work. Maintenance Men is not Gas Safe registered and never carries out gas work of any kind — no gas connections, cappings, valves or supply alterations. For gas involvement we recommend a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer with whom we work closely; they handle the gas side directly and quote it themselves. Swapping a gas hob for an electric one is very doable, and we can help plan the sequence so the gas cap and the electric fit happen sensibly together — with the gas part done by the Gas Safe engineer.

What we need from you

The new hob, on site, with its model number shared at booking so we can check supply and cut-out compatibility beforehand. Clear access to the worktop and the isolation point below. A decision on what happens to the old appliance — most customers ask us to take it. If you're unsure which new hob suits your existing supply, tell us your shortlist and we'll advise before you buy rather than after.

Realistic expectations

A like-for-like electric replacement is usually a single visit. A change of hob type, a supply that needs work, or a gas hob involved means more moving parts, and we'll say so at booking rather than promising a single appointment that reality won't support. Honest scheduling is part of the service.

Planning the sequence when gas is involved

Swapping between gas and electric hobs — either direction — involves two trades and one sensible order. Typically the Gas Safe engineer deals with the gas connection or capping first, then the electrical fit follows. We can help you plan that sequence so the kitchen isn't without a hob for a fortnight between the two visits, and we'll be clear about which parts are ours and which are the Gas Safe partner's. One phone call to us usually clarifies the whole timetable before you've committed to anything.

Booking your replacement

Contact us with the new hob's brand, model and type, the old hob's details, and any access constraints. Book by phone or website; the booking fee is paid when you book, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and any additional work is quoted in full and approved by you before it starts.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Replacing a hob is one of those jobs that's half installation and half archaeology: the old unit comes out, the state of the supply and cut-out is revealed, and the new one goes in properly. We handle electric and induction replacements end to end, and arrange Gas Safe engineers where a gas connection is involved.

What our customers say about our home appliances service

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 27 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Job: Tumble Dryer Not Starting Cycle

Good job, slightly late

Solid work. Hourly rate feels fair for the amount of work involved and everything was tested before they left. Would book again.

Job: Toaster Not Working

No mess left behind

Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about hob replacement

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

What does a hob replacement involve?

Safely isolating and removing the old hob, checking the supply circuit and connections, preparing the cut-out if needed, fitting the new hob to specification and testing it fully before handover. Anything unexpected — a damaged supply, an oversized cut-out — is quoted separately and approved before work continues.

Can you replace a gas hob with an electric one?

Yes, but the gas supply disconnection and capping is gas work requiring a Gas Safe registered engineer — Maintenance Men doesn't carry out gas work. We can coordinate the sequence with our trusted Gas Safe partner so the swap happens in one coherent plan.

Do I buy the new hob myself?

Yes — customers normally supply the appliance. Tell us the model when booking so we can check supply and cut-out compatibility before the visit, and flag any additional electrical work the new hob might need.

What if the old hob won't come out easily?

Old installations can be sealed in, seized or awkwardly wired. We deal with most on the day; if something genuinely needs extra work —追 cutting a new aperture, supply changes — we explain, quote and get your approval first.

How is this charged?

A booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The replacement is a defined visit; any additional work is quoted in full and approved by you before it starts, with materials quoted separately.
