Installing smart security is a planning job as much as a fitting job. The equipment is only half the purchase; the other half is deciding what each device needs to see, where signals will reach, where power will come from, and how the whole system behaves as one. That is why our installations start with the home rather than the box: we walk your property with you, understand the entrances and habits of the household, and design coverage that fits before anything is drilled.
Planning the coverage
Every home is different, and so is every risk picture. Front and back doors, ground-floor windows, side passages, garages and garden gates each suggest different devices — contact sensors, motion detectors, cameras with sensible detection zones, doorbell or entry coverage. We discuss what you want to know and when: alerts on your phone, local sirens, recording, and which areas genuinely matter to you. That conversation shapes the device list, and we are honest about what each type of sensor can and cannot detect, because overselling coverage helps nobody.
Placement, signal and power
Placement is where installations succeed or fail. Cameras need the right height, angle and field of view, with detection zones that ignore the road and focus on your property. Motion sensors need mounting heights and orientations that match the room and the household — including pets, which deserve explicit consideration rather than an afterthought. We measure WiFi signal at every proposed position before fitting, so devices do not end up in signal dead spots. And we plan power honestly: battery devices where batteries make sense, and proper, safely installed mains power where the device demands it.
Installation and configuration
We fit devices securely, run any necessary cabling neatly and safely, and configure the system properly: the hub sited for signal rather than convenience, devices paired and named sensibly, sensitivity and detection settings tuned to your household, notifications tested to your phone, and any integration with other smart devices set up and proven. Recording arrangements, where cameras are included, are set up so footage is stored the way you expect — and we will remind you that you, as the owner, are responsible for using cameras lawfully and considerately, respecting neighbours' privacy and avoiding unnecessary coverage of public space.
Honest limits
We do not claim a system prevents burglary — alarms and cameras deter, detect and record, and that is the honest scope of what they do. We do not provide monitoring services or promise police response; monitored services involve separate contracts with specialist providers. And we cannot guarantee cloud services, app platforms or your broadband, all of which modern smart systems rely on to some degree. What we can do is install and configure the system so that everything within your walls is tested as designed.
After the installation
We walk you through the finished system: how to arm and disarm, what each alert means, how to check the device list, and how to test sensors safely. Keep the manufacturer's manuals and our notes together, and test notifications monthly — it takes a minute and it keeps the system honest.
Booking and pricing
Book through the Maintenance Men website or by phone. Installation is quoted after a survey of your property, because no honest figure can be given before we know what the coverage requires. Tell us your property type, roughly what you want covered, and whether you already own any equipment — and we will take it from there.
A note on privacy and recording
For any camera installation, think through what its lens can see as well as what it should see. A front camera aimed across a boundary may capture a neighbour's doorway or public footpath; detection zones and angle adjustments can often focus the view on your own property. Recordings are personal data and the owner is responsible for handling them responsibly, including sharing footage only appropriately. We can configure the equipment to match the view you want, but legal obligations and privacy decisions remain yours, and we do not provide legal advice.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.
Booked 14+ days ahead
£25 booking fee
then £85 per hour of labour
Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.
Booked within 48 hours
£100 booking fee
then £65 per hour of labour
For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.
Same-day call-out
£220 booking fee
then £45 per hour of labour
Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.
Book the slot
Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.
We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A smart security system is only as good as its installation: a camera angled at the wrong patch of wall, a sensor out of range, a hub buried in a cupboard — each turns expensive kit into an unreliable one. Our installation service covers the whole job properly: planning coverage around how your home actually lives, installing devices in the right positions, wiring where wiring is needed, and testing every sensor, camera and notification end to end before we call it done.
What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service
5 out of 5 from 7 reviews
Would use again
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.
Job: CCTV Installation
Second time we have used them
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Backup Battery Fault
Exactly what was quoted
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Alarm Repair Service

Questions people ask about smart security installation
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Should I install smart security myself?
Battery-powered, plug-in devices with clear manuals can be self-installed, and there is nothing wrong with starting there. But proper placement, signal testing, mains wiring and whole-system configuration are where DIY installations usually fall short — and a poorly placed system gives unreliable coverage you may not notice until you need it.
What does the installation visit include?
A survey-based plan of coverage, secure fitting of all devices, any required cabling installed safely, full system configuration including sensitivity and notifications, and end-to-end testing of every sensor, camera and alert before we finish. Larger installations are quoted after the survey.
Are there legal things I need to know about cameras?
Yes, and it is your responsibility as the owner: use cameras lawfully and considerately, respect neighbours' privacy, avoid covering public space unnecessarily, and handle recordings responsibly — they are personal data. We fit and configure, but we do not provide legal advice.
Will the system work if my internet goes down?
Partly, and it depends on the equipment. Many sensors, sirens and local alarms keep working without broadband, while remote viewing and phone notifications need your connection and often the manufacturer's cloud service. We will explain exactly which functions depend on what, so you know the honest limits.
How much does installation cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved by you before we start, with any parts quoted separately.
Need smart security installation sorted?
Book a slot in the diary and pay only the booking fee up front. We confirm the rest before we start.
