Why taps burst

A tap or its fittings burst when something fails under pressure — a split tap body after a hard freeze, a corroded or seized valve, a connection that has worked loose, or a supply hose or flexi connector letting go. Outside taps are the most common casualties — an outdoor garden tap repair done after a knock or poor winterisation often fails a second time, because the whole fitting has taken a beating. Garden taps see frost, knocks from tools and years of weathering, and a frozen outdoor tap fix that only thawed the tap without checking the pipe behind it can leave a split waiting to open. Older fittings with fatigued brass or perished washers can fail suddenly during normal use, with no warning at all.

Why the damage worsens by the minute

A burst fitting under mains pressure loses water fast — many litres an hour if the connection has failed completely. Every minute counts: water wicks into floorboards, soaks plasterboard and finds its way to the room below. Shutting off at the stopcock buys you time, but the burst still needs a real repair — a temporary clamp or a rag-wrapped joint will not hold indefinitely, and the supply stays off your whole property until it is fixed. The sooner a plumber attends, the smaller the total damage and the repair.

How we diagnose it

When we arrive, the first job is containment: we confirm the water is off or get it off, and protect the area if it has not been. Then we diagnose — is it the tap body, the connection to the supply, the isolating valve, or the pipe behind? We inspect for frost damage, corrosion and fatigue, check whether the burst is local to the tap or part of a wider pipe failure, and assess whether the surrounding fittings have been weakened by the same event.

How we fix it

We repair or replace the failed fitting with quality components — a new tap body, connector, isolating valve or section of pipe as needed, remaking every joint we touch. We check that the supply arrangement is safe and that a proper isolating valve exists so future problems can be contained quickly. Before we leave, we turn the water back on and pressure-test the whole repaired section, watching every joint under load.

Preventing the next burst

Have old outdoor taps and tired connections checked or replaced before winter, and insulate anything exposed to frost. Make sure you can actually reach your stopcock and that it turns freely — the difference between a puddle and a flood is often how quickly the water can be isolated. If your property has flexi hoses under sinks, replacing them at end of life is cheap insurance. A tap that bangs hard on closing is also worth having checked, since noisy tap water hammer shakes joints loose over time. And it is worth knowing which local firm you would call: keep our number saved rather than relying on an emergency tap repair near me search while water is running.

When to call us

Call immediately if water is escaping from a tap, its connections or the pipe behind it, if an outdoor tap has split during a freeze, or if you have isolated the supply and need it back on the same day. Even if you have contained the leak, do not restore the supply until the fitting has been repaired or replaced. Our garden tap plumber covers outside taps as well as indoor ones, morning or afternoon.

Questions people ask about burst tap emergency repair

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

What should I do first when a tap bursts?

Turn off the water at the stopcock immediately, then open the burst tap to drain remaining pressure and clear the area of anything that water can damage. Once the supply is off, call us. Do not try to repair the fitting while it is still under pressure.

How quickly can you attend?

Burst tap call-outs are treated as high priority and we aim to get a plumber to you as quickly as we can — call us and we will give you an honest arrival window based on current jobs. Once on site, a typical repair takes around 90 minutes.

How is the work priced?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.

Can I repair a burst tap myself?

Isolating the supply is the job for you; the repair is better left to us. Burst fittings are usually under mains pressure and remaking joints badly can cause a worse failure when the water goes back on. Wait for a proper repair before restoring the supply.

Will my insurance cover this?

Most home insurance policies cover escape-of-water damage, though the plumbing repair itself may fall under your excess or be your responsibility. We provide a clear written report of the cause and the work done, which insurers typically ask for.
