What causes a pipe to burst
Most bursts are not sudden acts of violence against your plumbing. They are the end of a long argument between water, metal and temperature. Water freezing inside a pipe expands, and the ice can split copper or crack plastic even if the pipe does not fail until it thaws. High mains pressure, water hammer from a fast-closing valve, and pipes that were never clipped properly all add strain over years. Older copper thins from the inside as it corrodes, and plastic pipe becomes brittle where it has been exposed to sunlight or movement. Joints and elbows take the worst of it. When the wall of the pipe finally gives, water escapes at mains pressure, which is why a small split can deliver a surprising volume in a very short time.
Why it gets worse if you wait
Water does not stay where the pipe is. It runs along joists, through ceilings, behind plaster and under flooring, so the visible puddle is rarely the whole story. Plasterboard softens and sags within an hour or two of steady soaking, and once a ceiling comes down the repair becomes a building job as well as a plumbing one. Water reaching electrics, sockets or a consumer unit is a genuine safety risk. Damp also starts secondary problems quickly: swelling floorboards, lifting laminate, stained ceilings, and mould in the cooler corners of a room. The longer the supply stays on, the more of your home is in the path of the water.
How we diagnose a burst
The first job is always to stop the flow, so we locate the internal stopcock or the outside boundary valve and shut it. Then we work out where the water is coming from rather than guessing: tracing the run of pipework, checking the obvious candidates such as under-sink supplies, tank connections, radiator tails and any pipework in the loft or under the floor, and looking at where the damp is heaviest. Where the leak is hidden, we use moisture readings and, if needed, an isolated pressure test on a section of pipe to confirm which leg has failed. You get a plain explanation of what has split, what it feeds, and what the repair involves before any cutting starts.
How we repair it
For a straightforward split, we drain the affected section, cut back to sound pipe either side of the failure and replace it with new pipe of the correct material and diameter, using proper fittings rather than a patch. Where the pipe has failed at a joint, we remake the connection. Where a run is brittle or has been repaired before, we may recommend replacing a longer length so you are not paying for the same visit twice. Once made good, the section is pressure tested and the supply restored slowly, with every joint checked under working pressure. We then reconnect and test the fittings and appliances on that leg, and leave the area as dry and tidy as we found it. Most burst pipe work is done inside two hours; where pipework is buried in a wall or under a solid floor, making good adds time and we will tell you before we start.
Prevention that actually helps
Lag every pipe in the loft, garage and any unheated space, and lag the cold tank and its ball valve. Insulate the loft hatch and draught-proof the gaps around pipes where they pass through external walls. Find your stopcock now, label it, and check it turns; a seized valve turns a small leak into a large one. If your mains pressure is very high, a pressure-reducing valve on the incoming supply protects every joint in the house. Have old, thin-walled copper looked at before it fails, particularly where it is buried in screed or plaster. And if you go away in winter, leave the heating on a low background setting rather than off entirely.
When to call rather than tackle it yourself
Call us straight away if water is coming through a ceiling, if the flow will not stop when the stopcock is closed, if water is anywhere near sockets, lights or the consumer unit, or if the leak is under a solid floor or in a wall. Also call if the stopcock will not turn, or if you cannot find it. If water is near electrics, do not touch switches; isolate at the consumer unit if it is safe to reach, and keep clear of the area. Small drips from a compression fitting can sometimes wait for a booked visit, but a running leak on a supply pipe cannot.
Book a call-out
Tell us what you can see, whether the water is still running and where the stopcock is, and we will get an engineer to you as quickly as we can. If you are searching for a burst pipe near me at two in the morning, you are in the right place: call, and we will talk you through isolating the water while an emergency burst pipe plumber is on the way.

How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A burst pipe empties water into your home far faster than a towel can deal with it, and every minute it runs adds to the damage. We attend quickly, shut the water off at the earliest safe point, then find the split and repair it properly.

Questions people ask about burst pipe repair
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
What should I do first while I wait for an engineer?
Turn off the stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink or in a front cupboard, and open the cold taps to drain what is left in the pipes. Move anything valuable away from the water and put a bucket under the drip. If water is near sockets or a light fitting, switch off the circuit at the consumer unit if you can do so safely.
Will the whole house lose water during the repair?
Usually only the affected leg is isolated, so other taps and appliances keep working. If the burst is on the main incoming supply, the whole property will be off while we work, and we will tell you how long that is likely to be before we start.
Do you need to dig up floors or open walls?
Only where the pipe is actually buried. Most bursts are on visible pipework under sinks, in airing cupboards, in lofts or in accessible floor voids. If we do have to open a wall or lift boards, we discuss it first and keep the opening as small as the repair allows.
Is it worth claiming on my home insurance?
That depends on your excess and the extent of the damage, and it is your decision. We provide a clear description of the work carried out and a receipt, which is what most insurers ask for. Escape of water cover commonly deals with the damage rather than the pipe itself, so check your policy wording.
Can you repair a burst pipe without replacing the section?
Occasionally a joint can be remade or a small split sealed with a proper repair coupling, and we will use that route where the pipe around it is sound. If the wall of the pipe is thin or the failure sits next to an old repair, cutting in a new length is the more reliable answer and avoids a repeat visit.
