Have a Moving Handrail Checked Before Anyone Relies on It
We inspect the rail and wall fixings before tightening, so a loose fitting is not mistaken for a sound repair.
Booking fee plus hourly labour — the price is confirmed before any work starts.

A careful assessment helps identify a practical rail solution without guessing at the strength of the wall or the needs of the person using it.
Why we inspect before tightening
A fastener can become loose through vibration or use, but it can also be the first sign of an anchor pulling through weak material. Tightening a screw into a damaged hole may make it feel firm briefly without restoring support. We look for movement at each bracket, gaps, cracks, crushed plaster, bent fittings and signs that the rail has shifted. If the rail is on stairs or supports a transfer, stop relying on it until the check is complete. Do not pull repeatedly to judge whether it has improved.
What a tightening visit can include
If the bracket and substrate are sound and the fastener simply needs adjustment, tightening may be part of the agreed job. If a fixing is damaged, we explain repair options such as replacement fasteners suited to the wall, a new position, a compatible bracket or further backing. The fixing is only as strong as the wall behind it; we will not tighten a fitting that cannot safely take the intended load and describe it as secure. If multiple points are moving or the wall is deteriorated, a broader repair may be needed.
Booking the right scope
Tell us whether the rail is indoors or outdoors, how many brackets feel loose, when the movement started and whether the wall has visible cracks or damp. If the rail is moving significantly, keep people off it rather than waiting for the visit. We can discuss the earliest available appointment, but same-day service is not guaranteed. Photos can help with context but cannot show the strength of a hidden anchor. If you want several rails checked, list each location so the visit can be scoped appropriately.
What happens during the visit
We begin by asking when the problem appeared, whether the rail has moved suddenly or gradually, and whether anyone has relied on it since. We inspect the rail, brackets, screws and visible wall around each fixing. Cracks, crushed plaster, gaps, rust, bent metal and repeated movement can reveal different causes, but a visual check alone cannot establish the strength of hidden material. We look at the substrate and fixing arrangement for the intended load, and consider whether there may be a pipe or cable behind a proposed repair point.
Safe repair decisions
A loose, cracked or unstable rail should not be used until it has been properly refixed and checked. Do not test it by pulling or leaning on it; keep people away and use another safe route or support that is already secure. We will not tighten screws as a substitute for sound wall material. Depending on what we find, the sensible option may be new compatible fixings, a sound alternative fixing position, replacement of a damaged bracket or rail, suitable backing, or referral for building work. If no safe fixing can be established at that location, we will say so rather than leave a rail that only appears firm.
Quote, checks and next steps
We describe the cause we can see, any remaining uncertainty and the repair options before starting. The full cost is quoted and approved before work begins; parts are quoted separately. After an approved repair, we check the attachment and explain what was changed, but we do not claim that a repair makes an unsuitable wall suitable or guarantee future condition. Avoid using the rail until we confirm the agreed work is complete; if it shifts, cracks or feels different later, stop using it and contact us. The booking fee is paid when booking, while the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit.
Preparing to book
Tell us whether the rail is indoors or outside, what it is attached to if known, what has changed, and whether there are cracks, damp, corrosion or damaged plaster. A clear photo can help with triage but cannot replace an on-site assessment. Keep the area clear and mention known concealed services or earlier repairs. Our visit deals with the agreed rail work, not a structural certification, clinical assessment or guarantee of a person's suitability to use it. Larger repairs or building alterations are scoped separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A handrail may need more than a quick turn of a screw if its wall fixing has started to move. We check the cause of looseness first and explain whether tightening is appropriate or a repair is needed.
What our customers say about our mobility & accessibility service
4.5 out of 5 from 8 reviews
Proper job, no upselling
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the old fitting was seized and needed careful removal), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Loose or Faulty Brakes
Fine in the end
The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.
Job: Stair Lift Service
Would use again
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 70 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about handrail tightening service
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I tighten the handrail screws myself?
Only if the rail instructions support it and the wall and fixings remain sound. If the rail has shifted, cracked the wall or supports someone, stop using it and arrange an assessment.
Do you tighten every loose rail?
We inspect the substrate and fixings first. If tightening alone will not restore a suitable attachment, we explain and quote for the required repair instead.
Is it safe to use until the visit?
Not if it moves or feels uncertain. Stop using it and keep others clear until the fixing has been checked.
Can you check several handrails?
Yes. Tell us how many rails there are and where they are located so we can discuss the scope and likely visit time.
How is the price worked out?
A booking fee is paid when booking. The hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit; the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with parts quoted separately.
