When a DVR or NVR stops working, the symptom is usually dramatic: no picture on any camera, a recorder that will not power up, a menu that freezes, or beeps and error messages on the front panel. Because every camera feeds through it, a recorder fault can look like a whole-system failure, and the instinct is often to assume everything must be replaced. In practice many recorder faults are straightforward, and even a genuinely failed unit does not always mean your recorded footage is gone.

Why recorders fail

Recorders run continuously, often in lofts or cupboards where heat builds up, and years of that take their toll. The commonest failures are power supplies that have died after a surge or simply with age, hard drives that have worn out or been corrupted by a sudden power cut, firmware or settings corruption after an update or outage, and general board-level failure in units that have run hot for years. Loose or damaged connections, a tripped circuit or a failed adapter can also make a healthy recorder appear dead. Environmental factors matter more than people expect: dust-clogged vents, uninsulated lofts in summer and sudden power cuts all shorten recorder life.

How we diagnose it

Our engineer starts by establishing whether the recorder is dead or just unwell. We check the power path — the adapter or internal supply, the circuit it sits on, and the connections — before opening any diagnosis of the unit itself. If it powers up, we read its status and error logs, test the hard drive's health, and check whether cameras are actually reaching it. Where the drive is the fault, we establish carefully whether the recorded footage is still readable, because a failed drive and lost footage are related but not identical problems. We will explain plainly what has failed, what can be recovered and what the realistic options are.

Repair and replacement options

External power adapters, cabling, settings and firmware issues are usually sorted in the visit. A failed hard drive is a common and very repairable fault — we replace it with a drive appropriate for continuous recording, quoted as a part before fitting. A genuinely failed recorder is a different decision: we will tell you honestly when the unit is not worth repairing, and talk you through replacement options that match your cameras and needs, quoted clearly before any work. It is worth knowing that in many cases your existing cameras can be kept and connected to a new recorder, so a dead recorder does not automatically mean a whole new system.

Footage, data and responsible use

Recorded footage is personal data, and as the system owner you are responsible for handling it lawfully and considerately — footage should cover your own property rather than unnecessarily filming neighbours or public space, be retained for a sensible period, and be shared only appropriately, for example with the police if they request it in connection with an incident. If your recorder has failed, we will advise on retrieving existing footage where possible. We fit and configure equipment; legal questions about footage are not something we advise on.

Aftercare

After the repair, note that recorders benefit from good ventilation and protection from power cuts — a recorder in a hot, dust-filled loft fails far sooner than one with airflow. If you notice beeping, error messages or the interface slowing down, do not ignore them; those are usually early warnings worth a service visit rather than faults to silence.

When to call us

Book as soon as the recorder misbehaves, and tell us the make and model, exactly what it is doing, and whether anything preceded it — a power cut, storm or update is always relevant. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with parts quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

The recorder is the heart of a CCTV system, and when it dies everything else stops mattering. Recorder faults range from frozen interfaces and failed power supplies to drives and boards that have reached the end of their working life. Our engineer diagnoses which is which, recovers what can be recovered, and gives you straight advice on repair versus replacement.

What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service

5 out of 5 from 7 reviews

Would use again

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Job: CCTV Installation

Second time we have used them

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Backup Battery Fault

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about cctv dvr/nvr not working

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Should I try resetting the recorder to factory settings?

Please do not. A factory reset can wipe settings and, depending on the fault, complicate recovery of existing footage. Leave the recorder powered as it is, note what it is doing, and let us diagnose it — resetting is sometimes part of the repair, but only once we know what we are dealing with.

What do you check first on a dead recorder?

We start with the power path — the adapter or internal supply, the socket or circuit, and the connections — because a dead-looking recorder is often just a failed power component. If it powers up we read its logs and error codes, test the hard drive's health and check whether the cameras are actually reaching it.

Will I lose the footage already recorded on it?

Not necessarily. Many recorder faults — power supplies, firmware, settings — leave the drive and its footage untouched, and even some drive failures still allow recovery of readable recordings. We will establish what is recoverable during diagnosis and tell you honestly, rather than promising recovery before we have looked.

If the recorder is beyond repair, do I need new cameras too?

Often no. Existing cameras can frequently be connected to a new recorder, particularly within the same technology type, so replacing a failed unit does not automatically mean replacing the whole system. We will assess your cameras during the visit and quote any replacement clearly before you approve it.

How does the cost work for this kind of job?

You pay a booking fee when you book. Labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts; parts are quoted separately.
