Installing a shower looks straightforward until the unit is on the wall and the flow is disappointing, or the temperature will not settle. Nearly every unhappy installation we are called to put right shares the same root cause: the shower was chosen before the water system was understood.

What the job actually involves

A shower installation is three jobs in one. There is the plumbing — bringing hot and cold supplies to the right place at the right pressure, in pipework that will not be seen. There is the fixing — mounting the unit level and secure on a wall that can take it, cutting the enclosure or tray as needed, and sealing every joint so water goes down the drain and not into the floor. And for an electric shower there is the electrical side, which means a suitably rated circuit, an isolating pull cord or switch, and earthing, all of which is notifiable work in England and Wales.

Choosing a unit that suits your water system

This is where most of the value sits. A gravity-fed system with a tank in the loft and a cylinder in the airing cupboard produces low pressure at the shower head. Fitting a high-pressure mixer there will give you a weak, unreliable shower. The right answer might be a pumped mixer, or a shower pump, or a different arrangement entirely.

A combi boiler delivers mains-pressure hot water but at a limited flow rate. A large rain head may be more than the boiler can supply, and you will feel it as a temperature drop when the boiler modulates. A thermostatic mixer sized sensibly will be far better.

An unvented cylinder gives strong, stable pressure and suits almost anything. A low-pressure electric shower heats water as it passes and needs a good cold mains supply and a hefty cable.

If you want a straightforward electric shower installation, we will check the cold main's flow and pressure and the consumer unit's capacity before quoting, because those two things decide whether the job is a simple swap or needs a new circuit.

Why the fitter matters more than the box

A shower installation plumber is doing two things at once: making the water go where it should, and making sure it stays there. The difference between a good installation and a poor one rarely shows up on day one. It shows up a year later, as a weep behind the tiles, a unit that has gone loose on its fixings, or a flow that never quite matched the head you chose. Ask what will be tested and what will be left accessible before you book anyone.

The survey before the day

We ask for photos of the existing setup, the consumer unit if there is one nearby, and the shower area. On the day we confirm pipe sizes and routes, check for isolation valves, test pressure and flow, and agree the finished height and position with you before cutting anything. Nothing is opened up until the plan is settled.

How we install it

We isolate the supplies, drain down what is needed, and remove the old unit where there is one. New pipework is run in the least invasive route available, clipped and protected, with isolation valves fitted so the shower can be serviced later without turning off the whole house. The unit is mounted, levelled and connected, the electrical supply is terminated and tested where applicable, and the enclosure or tray is sealed with a sanitary-grade silicone.

Then we run it. Hot, cold, full flow, half flow, and a check for leaks at every joint after the water has been on for long enough to show a weep.

Time and cost, honestly

That covers a like-for-like replacement in an existing shower position with services already in place. What moves it beyond that is honest to say up front: a change of unit type, a new electrical circuit, moving the shower to a different wall, boxing in pipework, or making good tiling and decoration afterwards. We quote those separately rather than discovering them halfway through.

Aftercare and prevention

Keep the installation dry and ventilated — a bathroom that never dries out will destroy seals and grout far sooner than any manufacturing fault. Clean the shower head and hose periodically, run the unit briefly after use, and know where your isolation valves are. Keep the paperwork for the unit, since guarantees are usually conditional on professional installation.

When to call it in

Call us before you buy a shower if you are unsure what your system can support, or if a quote you have had does not mention pressure testing or electrical capacity. Call us after installation if the flow is weaker than expected, the temperature will not hold, or anything weeps.

Book a call-out

Send us a photo of your current shower and your boiler or cylinder, tell us what you want to achieve, and we will tell you what will work and what it will take. Book a call-out and we will survey, advise and install.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A shower only performs as well as the system feeding it. Before anything is fitted we check your water pressure, flow rate and hot water arrangement, then recommend a unit that will actually work in your home. The installation itself covers the pipework, the mounting, the electrical connection where required, sealing and a full test, so you are left with a shower that runs properly from day one.

Questions people ask about shower installation

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

How is the work priced?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.

Do I need an electrician as well as a plumber?

For an electric shower, the electrical connection and any new circuit must be done to the wiring regulations and the work is notifiable. We handle the plumbing and fitting, and we will be clear at quoting stage about what electrical work is needed and who will do it.

Can you fit a shower where there has never been one?

Yes, provided we can get hot and cold supplies and, for an electric unit, a suitable supply to the position. That is what the survey is for. The route for pipework and cable usually decides whether the job is straightforward or more involved.

Will a new shower improve my water pressure?

Only if the unit suits your system. A shower cannot create pressure that is not there, but choosing the right type — pumped, thermostatic or electric — for your supply will get the best performance available from it. That is why we test before recommending.

Do you take the old shower away?

Yes, removal of the old unit is part of the installation and we take it away with us. Making good tiling or decoration around a changed unit size is a separate job we will flag at the survey stage.
