Shed floors fail quietly. Water sits under the shed, wicks into the boards and joists, and by the time a floorboard flexes underfoot or a corner sags, the decay has often been developing for seasons. Because the floor is the shed's foundation, leaving it means the walls above start to move too — so a floor problem is worth taking seriously early.

Why shed floors fail

Damp from below is the main enemy: floors laid directly on earth, on thin membranes or on bases that pond water stay permanently moist on their undersides. Condensation, spilled water and rain driven in through a door gap add to it. Timber joists rot where they touch damp ground or sit on wet concrete, and floorboards swell, split and lift where they've been soaked. Overloading matters too — a floor designed for garden kit may flex badly under heavy storage or a workbench, and repeated flexing works fixings loose and cracks boards. Vermin can chew or undermine sections, and poorly supported spans bounce long before they rot.

What we assess

We examine the floor surface for soft spots, sagging and movement, then look underneath where access allows — at the joists, bearers and the base or ground beneath. We trace the moisture source: ground conditions, drainage around the shed, base construction, membrane condition and how the floor meets the walls. We check whether rot is local or has spread into the frame and wall bases, because floor repairs done above rotten joists don't last. If the shed's base itself is sinking or uneven, that's part of the diagnosis too — a new floor in a moving shed will fail the same way.

Repair options

Localised soft or broken boards are replaced with treated timber, matched to the existing floor. Rotted joists or bearers are replaced and additional support added where spans have been undersized. Where damp from below is the cause, we address it — improving the membrane, ventilation or the base itself — otherwise new boards absorb the same moisture and the cycle repeats. If damage is widespread through the floor structure, a rebuilt floor, often the most cost-effective point to fix while the shed is otherwise sound, is quoted clearly. If the whole shed is beyond the floor's worth saving, we'll say so honestly. Every option is quoted with full cost approved before work starts, and any materials are quoted separately.

Drying, weather and aftercare

Repairs need the affected area dry, so heavy rain can delay timber work, and we'll schedule accordingly rather than fit wet boards. Aftercare advice — keeping the base perimeter clear, fixing anything that discharges water beside the shed, and ventilating the interior — slows future decay, though no timber can be guaranteed against rot forever. If you store anything heavy or valuable, tell us; the floor's design load is part of the assessment.

If you're considering a workbench, shelving or heavier storage once the floor is repaired, mention that during the visit. Spans that were adequate for a mower and a few boxes may want extra joists or bearers to carry concentrated weight without bouncing, and it's far cheaper to add support while the floor is already open than to come back and lift new boards a year later. We'd rather build in the capacity you need now.

Booking your visit

Call or book through the website and tell us the shed's size and age, where the floor moves or feels soft, whether you can see or smell damp, and what you store on it. You'll pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before we start, with any parts quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

The shed floor does more work than any other part of the building — mowers, bikes, toolboxes and boots all live on it, usually in the dampiest spot in the shed. When boards soften, sag or lift, the damage usually starts below. We assess the floor, its joists and the base beneath, and quote repairs that deal with the cause, not just the creak.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about shed floor damage

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I replace shed floorboards myself?

Swapping a couple of boards is a reasonable DIY job if the joists underneath are sound. The catch is that floor damage usually comes from damp below, and new boards laid over the same wet joists or membrane rot the same way. If you're not sure what's underneath, an assessment first saves doing the job twice.

What do you check during a floor assessment?

We test the boards for soft spots and movement, examine the joists and bearers, look at the base or ground beneath, and trace the moisture source around the shed's perimeter. We also check whether rot has spread into the wall bases and frame before quoting repairs.

Do I need to empty the shed for floor repairs?

Usually yes, at least from the affected area — floor repairs need access to the boards and often underneath them. We'll tell you what needs moving before we arrive so you can plan; anything fragile or heavy is worth relocating somewhere dry in advance.

My shed floor bounces when I walk on it — is that serious?

Bounce usually means unsupported spans, loose fixings or undersized joists rather than rot, and it's worth fixing before heavy storage goes on. We assess whether the existing structure can be reinforced or whether sections need rebuilding, and quote the honest option either way.

How much does shed floor repair cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any parts quoted separately, so you know the total before any boards come up.
