Birmingham, Coventry, Dorridge and 12 more across the West Midlands.

Ground levels drift out of true for ordinary reasons: backfill from long-finished building work settles, beds are dug year after year and the soil mounds up in the middle, soil creeps from a border onto a path, or a previous owner's landscaping left a slope nobody has fixed since. Most of the time it is a nuisance rather than an emergency — but occasionally a changing level is a symptom of something underneath, and the difference between the two is the first thing we establish.

What we look at before moving any soil

The assessment has three threads. First, the shape of the problem: which areas are high, which are low, how deep the variations run and whether they follow a pattern — a sunken trench that keeps deepening can trace an old service trench or a failing drain, and that is identified before any soil goes on top of it. Second, water: we look at where rainwater collects, runs and pools, because regrading changes the drainage pattern of the whole garden, and a level job done carelessly can direct water towards the house or a neighbour's boundary — which is a problem you do not want to gift anyone. Third, the materials: what the existing soil is like, whether importing topsoil is needed and what quality it should be, because cheap soil is the falsest economy in gardening and we will say so when quoting.

Regrading beds and borders

Most uneven-soil jobs are in the beds and borders, where years of digging and mulching have built soil up against fences and dipped in the middle. The fix is straightforward in principle: soil is moved from where there is too much to where there is too little, worked to an even surface with a slight fall away from walls and fences so water does not sit against them, and firmed lightly so it does not settle unevenly after the first rain. Where a border is to be replanted, this is the perfect moment — the soil is at its most workable and nothing established is disturbed. Where planting is staying put, we work around it, lifting and re-sitting plants only where the level change demands it.

Bigger level changes and what they cost

Sometimes the job is bigger than shuffling soil around: a whole area needs raising to meet a new patio or path, a bank needs reducing, or a dip needs filling to match the lawn. That means importing topsoil, and quality matters more than price — poor-quality soil brings weed seeds, rubble and compaction with it, and it will disappoint for years. Imported soil, along with any skips or waste runs for the surplus, is quoted separately so you can see exactly what the materials cost against the labour. Where the level change is large or involves working near walls, fences or drains, we assess carefully before committing, because moving several tonnes of soil is a project rather than an afternoon.

Drainage, the quiet partner of every levelling job

Every time ground is regraded, water is being re-routed, and that is either the best part of the job or the worst mistake in it. Done thoughtfully, levelling is also the moment to fix the low spot that has been a bog every winter, and to give the whole garden a gentle fall that moves water to where it can drain. Done carelessly, it creates new pools and directs runoff at the back door. We plan levels with water in mind and will explain the direction of flow we are building before we start, so there are no surprises in the first heavy rain.

How to book

Book by phone or website with a note of which areas are uneven and whether any dip seems to be getting deeper over time. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before we start, with imported soil or waste removal quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Uneven soil is one of those problems that makes every other garden job harder — borders that drain into a dip, stepping stones that rock, a lawn edge that disappears into a bank. It is also a job where guessing causes as much trouble as it cures, because moving soil changes how water flows across the whole plot. We assess first, then level with a plan.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about uneven soil levels

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Could I level my garden beds myself?

Small-scale levelling — raking a border back to shape, topping a dip with a few barrows of soil — is very manageable DIY. Larger regrading is a different animal: it changes how water flows across the whole garden, needs decent volumes of good soil moved efficiently, and is easy to get subtly wrong in ways that only show up in the first wet winter. If water pooling is part of the problem, get the levels assessed properly first.

What do you check before regrading uneven ground?

Where the high and low areas are and whether they follow a pattern, whether any sunken area is still deepening, which way rainwater currently flows and where it pools, and what the soil is like. Together that decides whether the job is moving existing soil around, importing topsoil, or investigating something underneath before any levelling is done.

Can levelling a garden make drainage worse?

It can, if it is done without thinking about water — a careless regrade can direct runoff towards the house, a neighbour's boundary or a new low spot that becomes next winter's bog. We plan levels with the water in mind, explain the direction of flow we are creating before starting, and use the job as the opportunity to fix any boggy low spots while the ground is open.

A dip in my garden keeps getting deeper — should I just fill it?

Not until we know why. A hollow that keeps sinking can sit over an old service trench, a collapsing drain or poorly compacted backfill, and filling it simply buries a problem that will resurface — possibly as something more expensive. We investigate what is underneath first, and if there is a genuine cause, sorting that comes before any soil goes back.

How much does soil levelling cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before we start, and materials such as imported topsoil, plus any waste runs for surplus soil, are quoted separately — so you can see the labour and the materials clearly apart.
