A broken fence panel is one of the most common calls we take across the West Midlands, and the good news is that in most cases it is a single panel that has failed while the rest of the run is perfectly serviceable. The key is finding out why it broke before simply hanging a new one in the same spot.
Why Fence Panels Break
Panels are the lightest, most exposed part of any fence, so they take the punishment first. Wind pressure flexes the board until a frame joint or a slat snaps. Age and water do their share too: untreated timber absorbs rain, swells, shrinks and eventually splits along the grain. Fixings are another common culprit — panel clips rust, nails work loose, and a panel that is no longer held firmly at each side slaps about in every gust until something gives. Finally, some panels break because the post behind them has moved: if the post has leaned or rotted at ground level, the panel carries loads it was never designed for.
How We Assess the Damage
We start by looking at more than the broken panel. We check the condition of the posts on either side, the gravel board if there is one, and the fixings that held the panel in place. A panel can look like the whole problem while the real issue is a post that is soft at ground level or a fixing that has rusted through. We will tell you honestly which parts are sound and which are not, because fitting a new panel into tired posts is money spent twice. Everything is explained in plain terms before we quote, and you approve the full cost before we start. Parts are quoted separately from labour.
Repair and Replacement Options
If the panel itself has simply failed, we can replace it like for like — matching the size and, where possible, the style of the existing run. Where the frame is intact and only a few slats have gone, a repair may be the cheaper and sensible option. If a post turns out to be the weak point, we will explain the choices: a repair spur bracing the existing post, or a new post set in the ground. Digging for a new post means thinking about what lies beneath — pipes, cables and drains are often close to boundary lines, so we locate carefully and use detectors where appropriate, but no scan guarantees what is below, and we expect the customer to have utilities' plans to hand as part of a safe dig approach.
Weather, Timing and Working Sensibly
External work depends on the weather. Fitting panels in high wind is neither safe nor sensible, so we schedule the visit for suitable conditions and will say plainly if the weather must delay the work by a day. If your garden is left open in the meantime, we can often make a temporary arrangement — such as boarding or sheeting the gap — so pets and children are not wandering through an open boundary while you wait.
Aftercare
Once the new panel is in, a preservative treatment on any bare saw cuts will help it weather at the same rate as the rest of the run. Check the fixings after the first few windy weeks; a two-minute inspection catches a working clip before it becomes the next broken panel.
When to Call Us
Call if a panel has snapped, blown out or is hanging loose, or if you have noticed posts moving behind what looks like a panel-only problem. When you book, tell us roughly how many panels are affected, whether the posts are timber or concrete, and whether there is anything unusual about the boundary — a slope, a shared line with a neighbour, or a gate nearby. That helps us arrive with the right materials.
Booking is straightforward by phone or through the website. You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start, with parts quoted separately, so there are no surprises on the day.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A snapped fence panel leaves the garden exposed and rarely fails alone for no reason. Our visit covers an honest assessment of the panel, the posts and the fixings around it, then a repair we quote before any work starts. You approve everything before we pick up a tool.
What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service
4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Sorted the same day
Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.
Job: Uneven Shed Base
Turned up when they said
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Water-Damaged Patio
Good work, poor communication
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about broken fence panel
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Could I replace a fence panel myself?
Yes, if the posts are sound and you are comfortable lifting and securing a heavy panel — it is one of the more realistic DIY jobs. It becomes harder when a post has moved or rotted, or when the panel sits on a slope. If you are unsure why the panel failed, we can assess first so you do not fit a new one into a weak frame.
What do you actually check during the visit?
The broken panel, the posts either side, the gravel board if present, and every fixing holding the panel in place. We are looking for the cause, not just the symptom — a rusted clip or a soft post is the difference between a quick swap and a deeper repair. We then explain what is sound and what is not before quoting.
Is it a safety issue to leave a broken panel in place?
Usually it is a security and containment issue rather than a danger, but a panel hanging on one fixing can fall without warning, especially in wind. If the gap faces a road or a footpath, or you have pets and children, it is worth making it safe quickly. We can often secure a temporary cover on the day.
Will the new panel match the rest of my fence?
We match the size and, where the supplier still stocks it, the style — closeboard, lap panel, or whatever your run uses. Older styles are sometimes discontinued, so occasionally the honest answer is a close match rather than an identical one. We will tell you what is available before you commit.
How is the work priced?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start, and any parts such as the panel itself, clips or a repair spur are quoted separately. No work begins until you have approved the price.
