Stopping mid-lift is the fault that matters most, because it happens with someone suspended. Nothing in this page overrides the manufacturer's instructions for your particular hoist.

First, the Person

Talk to them. Ask whether they are comfortable, whether anything hurts, whether they can breathe easily. If they are in pain, in distress, struggling to breathe or in an awkward position they cannot hold, call 999 — that is always the right call . Stay with them, keep them warm,. Do not leave them alone to fetch tools.

What Not to Do

Never climb under a suspended hoist, and never stand on a chair, a bath edge or a step stool to reach the motor. Never push, shake, drag or force a hoist that has stopped, and never cut or unclip a sling to get someone out. A load held by a brake that has just proved unreliable is not something to test with your body under it. If you cannot reach the emergency lowering safely, keep the person comfortable and call for help instead.

Emergency Lowering, Only as the Manufacturer Says

Most hoists provide a way down without power: a pull cord or lever on a ceiling-track motor, or a manual release valve on a mobile hoist's actuator. It usually works slowly and deliberately,. Use it only if a confident adult can reach it from a stable position, and only following the instructions for your model — the cord on one make can lower, on another it releases a brake, and getting that wrong matters. If the unit is a track hoist with a mechanical brake release, that release must be operated exactly as the manual describes.

Once They Are Down

Take the hoist out of service. Do not put it back on charge and try again later as though nothing happened. Note what you can while it is fresh: where the trolley was on the track, whether the unit beeped or flashed, whether it had been on charge, whether the lift felt laboured just before it stopped, and roughly how heavy the person is against the rated capacity on the label. Those details usually point straight at the cause.

Why a Hoist Cuts Out Mid-Lift

  • Battery voltage collapsing under load. Very common on ceiling hoists left off the charger. The handset lights up, the motor starts, then the voltage sags and the control box shuts down to protect itself.
  • Thermal cut-out. Repeated lifts in a short period can heat the motor until its protection trips. It usually recovers after cooling, which is exactly why it still needs inspecting.
  • Overload or current-limit protection. A load above the rated capacity, or a sling or track dragging and making the motor work harder than it should.
  • A limit switch or end stop. The trolley reached the end of its travel, or a track joint has shifted and is blocking the rollers.
  • A handset cable pulled taut and parted, often when the carer stepped back with the handset still in hand.
  • An emergency stop knocked in, or a loose battery connection inside the motor unit.

How We Diagnose It

We reproduce the fault under load where it is safe to do so, which is the only way to catch an intermittent cut-out. We test the battery under current rather than at rest, check the charger and dock, inspect the full length of track for obstruction and joint movement, test the limit switches and end stops, check the handset cable and connections, and confirm the emergency stop and lowering functions work as intended. Where a thermal trip is suspected we look at duty cycle and motor condition rather than simply resetting it.

Repair Options and Honest Limits

Some of these are consumables — a battery, a cable, a dock contact set — and are straightforward. Others, such as a failing motor, brake or control board, are engineer work and are quoted after diagnosis. We use manufacturer-approved parts and will not promise a part is in stock or a completion time until we know what has failed. If the unit is old and the repair is disproportionate, we will say so plainly rather than take the work.

After the Repair

We run the hoist empty through its full travel, test the brake with a raised load, confirm the emergency stop and the emergency lowering both work, and check the track joints and fixings. Then we go through the charging routine and the warning signals with the person who uses it most.

When to Call Us

Book online or by phone, and mention that the hoist stopped with someone in it — we treat that as a priority. Tell us the make and model, whether it is ceiling-track, wall-mounted or mobile, where on the track it stopped and what it did beforehand. The booking fee is paid when you book, labour is hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work begins.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A hoist that stops with someone in the sling is frightening for them and for whoever is with them, and the instinct to force it is strong. Please do not. Your first job is the person, not the machine, and a calm voice plus a steady hand is worth more than any tool at that moment. Once they are safe and settled, we can find out what happened and put it right.

What our customers say about our mobility & accessibility service

4.5 out of 5 from 8 reviews

Proper job, no upselling

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the old fitting was seized and needed careful removal), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Loose or Faulty Brakes

Fine in the end

The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.

Job: Stair Lift Service

Would use again

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 70 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about hoist stops mid-lift

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

The hoist has stopped and my husband is still in the sling. What do I do right now?

Stay with him, talk to him and check he is comfortable and not in pain. If he is in pain, distressed or struggling, call 999. Emergency lowering should only be used exactly as your hoist's instructions describe, and only if you can reach the control from a stable position — never from a chair or a bath edge, and never by climbing under him. Then call us once he is safe.

Can I just reset it and finish the lift?

Please do not. A hoist that has cut out under load has told you something is wrong, and the next attempt may fail in a worse position. Take it out of service, leave it off charge, and let it be inspected. If the person still needs moving, that is a conversation about safe alternatives, not about persuading a faulty machine.

What will you check when you come out?

We test the battery under load rather than at rest, check the charger and docking contacts, inspect the whole track for obstruction, joint movement and end stops, test the limit switches, the handset cable and the emergency stop, and confirm emergency lowering works. We try to reproduce the cut-out under a controlled load so we are fixing the real cause.

Is it dangerous to keep using a hoist that has done this once?

Yes, that is the honest answer. An intermittent cut-out usually gets more frequent, and the next one may happen at the worst point of the lift. Until it has been checked, please do not use it to move anyone — even if it seems fine when you try it empty.

How much will the repair cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. Once we know what has failed we quote the full cost of the work and you approve it before we start, with any parts quoted separately so the figures are clear.
