A hoist service is a scheduled inspection with tests, adjustments and replacements where needed. It is not a repair visit, and it is worth being clear about the difference.
What We Check
- Battery and charging. Capacity under load, not just voltage at rest; charger output against specification; dock contacts cleaned; charge indicator checked for honesty.
- Brake. That it releases cleanly and holds a raised load without slip.
- Controls. Handset or remote function in both directions, response to release, limit switches at each end of travel, and any lock or key function.
- Emergency stop and emergency lowering. Both tested functionally, not just visually, because these are the two things nobody wants to discover is faulty.
- Track and trolley. Full travel by hand and under power, joints checked for alignment, rollers for play, end stops for condition.
- Fixings. Every bracket checked for movement and the substrate assessed where accessible.
- Sling attachment points. Hooks, clips and pivot points inspected for wear, with the spreader bar checked for damage.
- Cabling. Charger lead, handset lead and any track wiring checked for damage and correct routing.
Then we clean what should be clean, adjust what is adjustable within the manufacturer's specification, and replace consumables that are past their best.
What It Is Not
We do not certify the equipment as suitable for a particular person's clinical or care needs, and we do not make medical judgements. We also do not present our service as a statutory thorough examination — where a formal inspection regime applies to your equipment, that is a separate matter for a competent person appointed for the purpose, and we will tell you honestly what our visit covers so you can arrange whatever else is required. We keep no invented accreditation claims: if you need documentation for a care provider or insurer, ask us what we can provide before booking.
Why Scheduled Servicing Pays
Hoist faults cluster around consumables and adjustments: batteries, brushes, brakes, rollers, joints, fixings. Those are exactly the items a service inspects. A battery tested under load today can be replaced in a planned visit rather than in an emergency on a Sunday with someone waiting to be moved. A joint realigned now is not a jam next month. And a fixing checked now is not a track that has to be re-hung.
What We Might Find and What Happens
If we find something that needs work beyond the service — a failing motor, a control box with water damage, a track that has moved because the ceiling is unsuitable — we stop and tell you, with the cost, before doing anything. Nothing is replaced without your approval. If a part is needed and not available, we will tell you when we expect it rather than promise a date we cannot keep.
Safety and Access
We need safe access to the full length of the track, so please clear the floor area and move anything stored under it. We will not work at height on unsuitable steps or from furniture, and if the track runs over a stairwell or a bathroom we will discuss access before the visit. Nobody is lifted during a service: we test with a controlled load and with the unit empty. If a hoist stops with someone in the sling at any other time, keep them comfortable, call 999 if they are in pain or distress, and use emergency lowering only as the manufacturer's instructions describe.
How Often
The right interval depends on how heavily the hoist is used, the room it lives in, and what the manufacturer recommends — often annually, more frequently for heavy use or a steamy bathroom. We will not invent a figure for your situation without knowing those things; we will discuss it at the first visit and agree a sensible interval.
Booking
Tell us the make and model, when it was last looked at, how many lifts a day it does, and whether anything has been playing up. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any parts quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Servicing a hoist is mostly about finding the things that have not failed yet. A battery losing capacity, a brake releasing a fraction late, a joint drifting out of alignment, a fixing beginning to move — none of these announce themselves until they matter. A planned visit catches them while they are cheap, and it gives you a record of the unit's condition.
What our customers say about our mobility & accessibility service
4.5 out of 5 from 8 reviews
Proper job, no upselling
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the old fitting was seized and needed careful removal), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Loose or Faulty Brakes
Fine in the end
The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.
Job: Stair Lift Service
Would use again
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 70 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Control Panel Fault

Questions people ask about hoist servicing
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
How often does a hoist need servicing?
It depends on use, environment and the manufacturer's recommendation — commonly annually, more often for heavy daily use or a steamy bathroom. We will not quote an interval before we know those details; we will discuss it at the first visit and agree something sensible.
What is included in a service?
Battery capacity under load, charger and dock, brake release and hold, handset or remote function, limit switches, emergency stop and emergency lowering tested functionally, full track travel, joints and rollers, every fixing, sling attachment points and cabling. We clean, adjust and replace consumables as needed and report anything else we find.
Does a service certificate satisfy my care provider or insurer?
Not necessarily, and we will not pretend otherwise. A formal thorough examination under any statutory or contractual regime is a separate matter for a competent person appointed for that purpose. Ask us before booking what documentation our visit provides, and we will tell you plainly so you can arrange whatever else is needed.
Can I service it myself to save money?
Charging checks, cleaning the track and keeping the handset dry are reasonable and worth doing. Testing a brake, checking fixings, or working on the control box is not — those need the right equipment and someone competent to judge the result. A missed brake fault is not worth the saving.
What will the visit cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost of the work and you approve it before we start, with any parts or consumables quoted separately.
