A thermostat can appear inaccurate when its schedule, mode or installer configuration is not understood. We review the settings and operation before deciding whether a control adjustment, sensor check or wider diagnosis is appropriate.

What the symptoms can tell us

The phrase not calibrated can describe several different problems: an incorrect time schedule, an unfamiliar operating mode, a permitted temperature offset or a sensor that is not reading properly. These are not interchangeable. Changing an offset may conceal a sensor or placement issue, while changing a schedule may only affect when heat is requested. Some models contain installer-only settings that control switching behaviour and should not be altered by trial and error. Write down what you expect the thermostat to do, what it actually does, and any changes made recently. The model's guide and current settings help establish whether the control is configured as intended.

Checks during the visit

The engineer identifies the exact thermostat model and reviews normal user settings, time, schedule, mode and any available calibration feature. The unit's displayed temperature and call-for-heat behaviour are assessed alongside how the heating responds. If the system includes a remote sensor, receiver or programmer, its role is considered before changing configuration. Any installer parameter is handled only where its meaning and compatibility are established. The engineer will explain which settings are customer-operable and which should remain at the manufacturer's or system-specific configuration. A diagnostic visit does not include an assumption that the entire heating system needs reprogramming.

Repair choices and limits

A schedule or mode correction may resolve the concern without replacing hardware. Where an allowed offset is suitable, the engineer can explain its effect and record the original value. If a sensor or control is faulty, repair availability and compatibility inform the choice between repair and a replacement. A setting adjustment will not correct poor heat circulation, a failed receiver or a room affected by drafts. Any wider problem is identified separately and discussed before additional work. No promise is made that one universal calibration value suits all rooms, systems or thermostat models.

Electrical and heating safety

A thermostat is a control device, not permission to work inside a boiler. Maintenance Men handles thermostat controls and suitable electrical or water-side heating faults within scope, but does not carry out gas work or open a gas boiler to adjust gas components. If symptoms suggest a combustion, flue or other gas-side safety concern, stop using the appliance if advised, leave it unopened, and arrange a Gas Safe registered engineer; an urgent gas smell is not a routine booking. Do not remove covers, probe live terminals or bypass a control. The engineer will explain any limit before proceeding.

Booking, price and next steps

The booking is for the stated diagnostic or defined thermostat visit, not an automatic promise that every fault can be fixed in one appointment. Booking fee is paid when booking; the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost for the agreed work is quoted and you approve it before work starts. Any required replacement control, wiring materials or other parts can be identified and quoted separately; parts are not assumed to be included. Availability, compatibility and access may affect the next step. Book online and include the thermostat make and model, heating system type if known, symptoms, and anything already checked.

After the visit

Keep the manufacturer's user instructions and note the settings before making further changes. Test one ordinary adjustment at a time and observe whether the expected schedule or call for heat occurs. Avoid installer menus and factory resets unless the manufacturer explains how to restore the system. If an adjustment seems to make the heating run continuously or stop responding, return to the recorded user setting if safe and report the behaviour. Do not open a wired unit to search for a calibration control.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

What our customers say about our heating & radiators service

5 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Fast, tidy and friendly

Booked the £220 booking-fee slot on Tuesday and got a message confirming the time the same morning. The cause was explained, the price agreed before any work started, and the job was done in about 46 minutes. Clean and tidy when they left.

Job: No Heating from Boiler

Turned up when they said

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 46 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Job: Expansion Vessel Fault

Exactly what was quoted

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Airlock in Hot Water System

Questions people ask about thermostat not calibrated properly

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I recalibrate the thermostat myself?

Use only a normal user adjustment described in the model's guide, and record its current value. Installer settings and factory resets can change control behaviour, so seek advice if the instructions are unclear.

What does the engineer review?

The model, schedule, time, mode, permitted offset and call-for-heat behaviour are checked against the observed heating response. Related sensors or receivers are considered where fitted.

Is calibration a safe way to stop the boiler running?

Do not use calibration to mask continuous heating or a suspected control fault. A wired thermostat may have electrical connections, and the actual cause should be diagnosed before settings are changed.

Will setup changes improve a cold room?

Only if an incorrect setting is responsible. If the thermostat is configured correctly, sensor location, radiator output or another heating issue may need separate assessment.

How is the visit priced?

The booking fee is paid when booking. The hourly labour rate varies with how soon you need the visit, and the complete cost is quoted for approval before work starts; any parts or materials are quoted separately.
