Cabinets: the furniture with doors that get judged daily

A cabinet is judged by its doors. Gaps that drift from even to ragged, doors that swing open on their own, hinges that click when they close — all of it traces back to assembly and hinge adjustment. The carcass work underneath matters too, because a cabinet that is not square can never hang doors evenly, no matter how patient the adjustment. This is furniture where the last millimetre is the whole difference between factory-fresh and obviously self-built.

What we assemble

Storage cabinets, display cabinets with glass, sideboards and cupboards, bathroom-style units and hall cupboards — freestanding cabinet furniture assembled in your home. The build pattern is familiar, but the tolerance is tighter than a bookcase: carcass square, back panel true, then doors hung and adjusted. Soft-close hinges are seated and clipped in correctly, and where a cabinet has glass panels or mirrors we handle them with the care their fittings expect, never clamping hard and never fitting a damaged panel.

Hinge work is most of the finishing

Modern cabinet hinges adjust in three directions, and using all three is what makes doors look right. We set the side-to-side gap, the height alignment across paired doors, and the depth so the door sits flush with the carcass edge, then check the soft-close action and the closed position — a door that springs open is a depth adjustment away from right. Drawers with runners get the same treatment, aligned so the fronts sit level with the doors beside them. It is patient, precise work, and it is where our experience shows.

Stability and where it stands

A loaded cabinet — files, crockery, tools — is a heavy object, and tall cabinets can tip like any other tall furniture. Where the unit is tall, the wall is suitable for a proper fixing and you agree, we secure it with anchors matched to the wall construction we find on site; where the wall will not take one, we say so plainly rather than fit something we do not trust. We also level the cabinet to the floor, which matters in older West Midlands houses, because an out-of-level cabinet will drift out of alignment within weeks no matter how well it was built.

Details worth deciding early

A few cabinet decisions are easier made before the build: which way reversible doors open, where handles sit if the kit leaves them to you — many doors arrive undrilled, and handles may need to be supplied separately — and how the piece sits relative to skirting boards and sockets. We will ask before fitting anything permanent and drill handle positions only once you have confirmed the layout. If the cabinet is going near a radiator or a damp external wall, tell us, because position affects how the doors behave through the seasons.

We will ask before fitting anything permanent and drill handle positions only once you have confirmed the layout. If the cabinet stands on carpet, we will check the feet sit solidly rather than merely level, because carpet compresses under load and a cabinet level on day one can drift by the month.

Preparing and booking

Clear the room where the cabinet will stand and leave the cartons nearby, and tell us about access when you book. If parts arrived missing or damaged, flag it in advance — we will assess what can reasonably be worked around and identify the manufacturer's replacement parts where needed, which you would order separately. Call Maintenance Men to book: same-day may be available, a booking fee is paid when you book, labour is hourly with the rate depending on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and agreed with you before work starts. We are fully insured across the West Midlands.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Questions people ask about cabinet assembly

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I assemble a cabinet myself?

You can, and the carcass is the easy part — what defeats most self-builds is the hinge adjustment, where doors need to be aligned in three directions and then re-checked once the cabinet is loaded. Glass panels and soft-close hardware add their own traps. If you are happy with doors that are nearly right, DIY will get you there; if you want them even, that is our job.

What do you inspect and do during cabinet assembly?

We check the kit against the manufacturer's parts list, keep the carcass square as it is built, and fix the back panel true before anything else. Doors are then hung and adjusted in all three hinge directions until gaps are even and the soft-close action is clean, and drawer fronts are aligned with the doors beside them. We finish by levelling the cabinet to your floor and testing every door and drawer.

Can you fix a cabinet to a plasterboard wall?

It depends on the wall's construction, which we assess before drilling — plasterboard on studs can take suitable anchors for some loads, but a heavy loaded cabinet may need fixing into the studwork itself or may not be safely fixable at all. We will tell you honestly what your wall allows and agree the approach with you. We never fit restraint we do not believe will hold.

My cabinet doors won't stay closed since assembly — can you fix that?

Almost always, yes. Doors that spring open usually need a depth adjustment on the hinge, doors that sit crooked need height or side adjustment, and doors that have drifted since the build may need the carcass re-levelled first. It is the kind of small, precise fix we handle regularly, and it is worth booking sooner rather than later so the habit of forcing the door shut does not damage the hinge.

How is cabinet assembly priced?

A booking fee is paid when you book, labour is hourly with the rate depending on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved by you before work starts. Larger cabinets or several units simply take longer, which the quote reflects. Any manufacturer replacement parts are identified and quoted separately.
