When the Machine Is Innocent

Appliances get blamed for faults they did not cause. A washing machine that trips the electrics every few cycles may be perfectly sound while a socket connection behind it fails under the sustained load. An oven that keeps cutting out may be plugged into a circuit that is already marginal. A dishwasher tripping the RCD may share its protection with several other appliances, any of which could be the culprit. Guessing wrong is expensive: a new machine installed onto a faulty connection inherits the same problem within weeks, and appliance engineers routinely bill for visits that end at a healthy appliance.

The Usual Suspects Around an Appliance

The wiring failures that masquerade as appliance faults are predictable: flexes damaged where they run behind machines or through doorways — crushed, kinked, or chewed; plugs with loose or overheated terminations, especially where the flex enters; socket outlets whose connections have loosened after years carrying a heavy load; extension leads and adapters that were never rated for what is now plugged into them; and the connections where fixed appliances such as cookers and showers meet their supply. Each of these can drop power, trip protection or heat up, and each looks from the kitchen table exactly like a machine about to die.

How We Separate Appliance from Wiring

The visit starts with the pattern: what trips, how often, whether it correlates with cycles, weather, or specific settings. Then we test rather than swap. With the circuit isolated, the appliance connection is examined and measured — flex continuity, plug terminations, socket condition under load — and the circuit itself is tested for the healthy readings that rule it out or the faults that condemn it. Where the appliance is suspected, the tests distinguish a failing flex or plug from a failing machine, which saves you from either replacing a good appliance or continuing to use a dangerous one.

The Repair, Whichever Side It Falls

Wiring-side repairs are usually same-visit work: a damaged flex replaced or a plug rewired properly, a socket connection remade back to sound copper, an underrated extension retired in favour of something appropriate, or a fixed appliance's connection remade and tightened correctly. Circuit-side faults — a failing joint upstream, an overloaded shared circuit — are repaired the same way, and we will say clearly if the circuit needs reorganisation so the appliance is not asking more of it than it should. If the testing points at the appliance itself, you get an honest verdict, not a repair that does not exist, and you can take that to an appliance engineer with confidence.

Prevention Worth Knowing

Appliance wiring faults have habits worth breaking: flexes should never run under carpets or through door hinges; heavy appliances are better on their own sockets than on shared extension boards; and any plug, socket or flex that has ever felt warm deserves a look before it fails properly. We will point out the ones we noticed during the visit.

When to Call Us

Book a visit when an appliance trips the electrics repeatedly, cuts out in a pattern, or behaves erratically — before buying a replacement machine or booking the appliance firm. Burning smells, a hot plug or socket, or visible damage to a flex mean switching the appliance off and the circuit off at the consumer unit, and booking urgently.

Book Your Diagnosis Visit Today

Before you pay for an appliance that was never broken, let us prove where the fault actually lives. Call or book online and we will test the appliance connection and the circuit behind it, repair the guilty side, and leave both working — with the guilty party named either way.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

When an appliance trips the electrics, cuts out mid-cycle or behaves erratically, the instinct is to blame the machine and call the appliance repair firm. Often the fault is in the wiring around it: a damaged flex, a failed plug, a socket connection that drops under load, or a circuit that objects to what the appliance draws. We test both sides of the plug — the appliance connection and the circuit behind it — find where the real fault sits, and repair the part that actually needs it.

Does what it says on the tin

No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.

Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement

Fixed it, but took longer than expected

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights

Turned up when they said

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about appliance wiring fault

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

What does it cost to check an appliance wiring fault?

You pay a booking fee when you book, then hourly labour at a rate that depends on how soon you need us. Most appliance-connection faults are diagnosed and repaired in one visit, and the full cost of the repair is quoted and approved before any of it is carried out.

Can I check the appliance plug myself?

Looking is sensible: a scorched plug, a kinked flex or a loose fit in the socket is worth spotting. Beyond that, leave the testing to us — checking inside a plug or flex means measurements that prove whether a conductor is sound, and a rewired plug with a fault elsewhere just moves the mystery along.

How do you tell whether it's the appliance or the wiring?

Testing, not guesswork. We measure the flex, plug and socket connection, then test the circuit supplying them, under the same conditions that trigger the fault where possible. Healthy circuit readings plus a faulty flex point one way; sound connections plus a tripping circuit point the other — either way you get a definite answer.

Can a faulty appliance damage my wiring?

It can. An appliance with failing insulation that repeatedly trips an RCD is being interrupted properly, but an appliance drawing excessive current through an underrated connection heats both the cable and the socket over time. That is why a persistent tripping pattern deserves diagnosis rather than endless resetting.

My new appliance trips the electrics — is it faulty?

Not necessarily. New appliances are frequently installed onto connections that were already marginal, and the first sustained load exposes them. Before returning the machine, let us test the socket, its connection and the circuit — if the wiring is guilty, the replacement would inherit the same fault on day one.
