How Water Gets Into an Outdoor Socket
Outdoor sockets are designed to keep rain out, but that protection wears out. Water gets in when the weatherproof seal perishes, the lid no longer closes squarely, the cable gland loosens, or the casing cracks with age and frost. It can also track down the cable itself and arrive inside the socket from behind. Once inside, water sits on live terminals, corrodes the contacts, and can allow current to leak to earth — which is often why the RCD has been tripping.
Why This Is a Genuine Safety Issue
Moisture on live parts can cause arcing, corrosion that heats under load, and earth leakage that trips the household RCD every time it rains. Worse, a socket that looks dry on the outside may still be wet inside. If you can see water or signs of it, switch the circuit off at the consumer unit if you can do so safely, keep everyone away from the socket, and book urgently. In time, corroded connections can also heat up under load. Sorting the fault early usually means one fitting or one section of cable, not the whole system.
What We Do When We Arrive
First we make the situation safe: the circuit is confirmed dead, and the socket is opened and inspected. We assess how far the water has travelled — into the terminals, down the cable, or into the back box — and look for the entry point that let it in, whether that is the seal, the gland or the cable route itself. Then we test the circuit wiring for insulation damage and earth leakage, because the socket is only half the story. You will be told exactly what we found and given a firm price before any replacement work starts.
How We Repair It
A socket that has taken water is replaced, not dried and refitted — once seals and terminals have been wet, their condition cannot be trusted. We fit a quality weatherproof (IP-rated) socket with sound seals and correct glands, remake the connections cleanly, and if the cable itself is wet or damaged we replace the affected section. Anything else the moisture has reached — back boxes, surrounding fixings, other fittings on the same circuit — is dried, tested or replaced as needed. Before we leave, the whole circuit is tested under load and the RCD checked for correct operation.
Keeping It Dry Next Time
The refitted socket is only as good as its siting and its seals. We will show you how the lid and seals should close, advise on a weather hood or a more sheltered position if the socket is fully exposed, and check that the cable enters from below or is properly glanded so water cannot run down into it. If the socket is regularly soaked by a leaking gutter or an overflowing pipe, fixing that drip is part of the long-term answer.
When to Call Us
Call urgently if you can see water inside the socket, if the RCD trips when it rains, if there are scorch marks or a burning smell near the socket, or if the socket buzzes or crackles. Routine visits are fine for a socket that simply looks weathered — but any sign of moisture with power present is an urgent booking, not a "when convenient" one.
Book a Water-Damaged Socket Repair Today
We cover the West Midlands and treat water-damaged outdoor electrics as priority work, with same-day and emergency slots where we have them. Call us first — describing what you can see inside the socket helps us prepare. We will make it safe, put it right, and leave it sealed against the next downpour.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Water and electricity in the same fitting is a fault to take seriously. If you can see water, condensation or corrosion inside an outdoor socket, the safest move is to switch the circuit off at the consumer unit and leave it alone until an engineer arrives. We dry out, test and replace whatever the water has damaged, and refit the socket so it stays dry in future.

Questions people ask about water damaged outdoor socket
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
What should I do right now before you arrive?
Switch the circuit off at the consumer unit if you can do so safely — that removes the danger and stops further damage. Keep everyone away from the socket, don't open it, and don't try to dry it out or use it. If the consumer unit itself is wet or you're unsure which switch to turn, just leave everything alone and keep your distance.
Can I dry the socket out and keep using it?
No. Even after it looks dry, terminals and seals that have been wet are unreliable, and the water may have damaged the wiring behind the socket where you can't see. A socket that has taken water needs replacing and the circuit needs testing. It is a modest repair now versus a serious fault later.
Why has my RCD started tripping when it rains?
That pattern usually means water is reaching live parts somewhere outdoors — a socket, a light or a cable joint. Each wet period lets a little more moisture in, and the RCD detects the leakage. It is a clear warning sign, not a nuisance, and it is worth an urgent visit before the fault worsens.
How much will the repair cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
Will the new socket stay dry?
We fit weatherproof (IP-rated) sockets with good seals and correctly glanded cable entry, positioned and hooded where necessary so driving rain can't reach them. We'll show you how the lid should close and what to check after storms. A properly fitted outdoor socket should cope with UK weather for years.
